Friday December 4
Took off for the Bird around 3:00ish. I took pictures and unpacked while Daddy went to SVS to get himself some more sugar cookies. Wrote an e-mail and saved it in the outbox. Then we fixed some sandwiches for supper and sat out on the balcony to eat. Also took some pictures from the balcony. Then we discovered that the hotel does not have washcloths so Lew went over to Bintangor to get some.
Saturday December 5
It was a very warm last evening and night. We are thankful that there is a big window that opens, as there is no air conditioning and no fan in the room. I did not sleep well last night, partly due to the heat, and partly to being uncomfortable. Didn’t think to put a cushion under the mattress before going to bed. Also had a nightmare and woke up screaming. Woke up Daddy also.
This morning, we had our breakfast out on the balcony. A little later in the morning, we went out for a walk to some of the stores. I found some nice sandals which I will put away for furlough. Daddy found a couple tablets to use for journals. We also got some balloons, but when we got back to the apartment, the balloons were lost. Must have dropped them somewhere along the way. Stopped and browsed around the Bird gift shop before coming back to our room. Daddy bought some old newspapers to use for starting fires. They have some really nice gifts there that we can get later to take home for people. And the prices are not too bad. We expected them to be too high in a hotel gift shop.
Shirlyn got us a clean trash bag, clean towels, face cloth, and then brought in a dish of very pretty flowers. She is an islands’ meri, not a highland’s meri. She has worked here three years.
A little after 6:00, we went down to the Lahani Room for supper. There was only one other party there besides us. The waiter has been there 23 years. He said this is a slow time of year, as a lot of people have gone away on holidays. We were served some yummy whole wheat rolls, and the vegetables (asparagus spears, zucchini, and carrots) and mashed potatoes were okay. After that, I wrote a couple more e-mails while Daddy shaved and showered. Then we played a game of scrabble.
