More Goodbyes

October 24.    I spent some time this morning, looking through the files on some of our old back-up CD’s, transferring what I thought we might use to a flash drive, and getting rid of some CD’s so we’ll have a few less things to carry with us in our suitcases.
About mid-morning, Daddy and I went uptown to get a few groceries.  We started to go to market, but there were thousands of people around that area as the SDA’s are having big meetings of some kind in the park area across from market.
Went to market Papindo on the way uptown, and on our way out from there, Philemon called and said he was at market and wanted to come see us.  We were heading toward Bintangor, and there we met up with Wilson as well as Philemon.  After Bintangor, we went to uptown to Papindo and then came back to the flat.  Wilson and Philemon had lunch with us and stayed for a couple hours talking and looking at the picture files on our computer.  We enjoyed a good visit with them.  Then came the sad time of hugging and crying and saying good-bye.  After that we had our nap.
Power was out almost all afternoon and didn’t come on until after 7:00 this evening.  So couldn’t do any computer work because I had used up a good amount of the battery power showing the pictures to Philemon and Wilson early afternoon.  So after nap, I glued bird pictures into a scrapbook until I ran out of glue.  Then I just cut and fit them so they would be ready to glue later.
For supper, I cooked rice and the bok choy we had bought today, and finished cooking the scotch fillet I had gotten last night at the restaurant.  I had asked for it to be well-done, but it was hardly done at all so I brought it home.  Daddy had some leftover chicken that he brought home and he added part of that to his rice.
“For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.”  Isaiah 54:10

October 25.  Woke up before 6:00 this morning so decided to go ahead and get up.  Enjoyed a nice quiet time while all was nice and quiet.
After Daddy got up, I got busy making pancakes; and after breakfast, I wrote a few e-mails.  Then we listened to a message by a Pastor Shane Lewis from Alabama.  The message was titled “No Reserves, No Retreats, No Regrets.”  It was a very challenging message.  I also got journal notes for this past week ready to send to Christy and Connie.
At 12:00, Jason came and picked us up and took us to their house for dinner.  Melanie had made fresh buttermilk biscuits and delicious cream of vegetable soup.  There were chocolate chip banana muffins for dessert, and Melanie gave us the rest to take home.  We enjoyed a good time together with them.
Got home from there about 2:00 and went right to nap.  I guess I was really tired because I had a good, long sound nap.  At 3:45 Daddy woke me up.  I was glad he did because I needed to wash my hair.
Got hair washed and then peeled and mashed up boiled eggs that had been cooked in the morning for egg salad sandwiches this evening.
“And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.”  Acts 24:25

Slow Days

October 22.  Today was a very slow day.  Praise the Lord for lots of opportunity to rest.  Wrote a few e-mails.  Transferred all the pictures from the last few days to the computer, and then got them all edited and resized.  Also got this month’s ministry update written.  Had almost forgotten about it.
Instead of eating lunch here at the guest house, we decided to go up to the kai bar and get something.  I got 1/4 chicken and chips (fries), and Daddy got a chicken sandwich.  The chicken and especially the chips were quite greasy so will try something else tomorrow.
While I was having nap, Daddy went back up to the shipping department and took care of all the paper work and payment for shipping our goods.  We are thankful to have that done.
“6Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.  7Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.  8For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.”  Isaiah 51:6-8

October 23.  More sunshine and much warmer today than yesterday.  We thought the plane wouldn’t be coming to get us until late in the afternoon, but around 8:30, MAF called Daddy and said the plane would be there in ten minutes.  We were thankful that we had packed almost everything up first thing in the morning and that all the paper work for our shipping had been finished yesterday.  We had to call for the P2 Bus to come pick us up.  It was a bit longer than ten minutes before the plane actually got there, but we didn’t have to wait long.  And we didn’t have to wait for anything to be unloaded from the plane as he had no cargo to unload.  All we had to do was load up our four small items of cargo and climb aboard, and we were soon off for Goroka.  Arrived in Goroka about 9:45.
After we got to CRMF, I put away the things we had brought with us plus all the food and other items that were in the boxes we had sent out to Goroka ahead of time, while Daddy took Jeff out to Lapilo and brought the car back.  Then he walked up to the store to get some bread while I got the table set for lunch.
After nap, Daddy went uptown to get some things for his breakfast, and some apples for me.  After I got up from nap, I started rearranging our travel suitcases, trying to even out the weight more and get them better organized.
At 5:00, we started showers.  Remi and his wife Tjandra picked us up at 6:00 to take us to the Steakhouse for supper.  When we got to the Steakhouse, however, we discovered it was closed.  It is SDA owned, and Sabbath had begun.  So we went to Pacific Garden Hotel instead.  Plenty of good food there, and we enjoyed the time spent getting to know the Van Wermeskerkens.  A young man named Andrew, from New Zealand, working with Pacific Helicopter, also joined us at the table.  Remi said he gets pretty lonely for fellowship as there are no other ex-pat believers with Pacific.  He seemed like a very nice young man, and he was very knowledgeable about many subjects.
“The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.”  Isaiah 52:10

Saying Goodbye

October 19.  It didn’t take as long as I expected to get everything in order for all the items that are to be shipped.  I am thankful those items are ready.  And I was thankful for Dallas and Bonita looking after the door today and helping with some other work too.  They glued pictures of trees, grass, flowers, and food into scrapbooks to go with Sunday school lessons on creation.  Dallas helped Daddy take nails out of plywood he had taken off the walls for Tomas to buy, and then Dallas cleaned all the dust off the back of the pieces of plywood.  Dallas and Jonathan (who was here for other things) helped Daddy weigh the items for shipping, and later Dallas and Bonita washed off all the suitcases and the foot locker so no PNG mud or dirt will be on them when they are shipped.  This afternoon, Dallas erased all my pencil marks out of the teacher’s copy of one of the readers we used this year so now that book can be sold.
Lots of people came and went during the day.  Some people carried boxes up to the airstrip so the boxes could go out to SIL on the plane that was supposed to come today.  But the plane never came so we guess the boxes are stored at Tomas’s house.  They weren’t brought back here.
This afternoon, I did some reorganizing of our travel suitcases and will have to finish that job tomorrow.  Daddy and I finally got the big table in the office all cleaned off, and I straightened up all the papers in the scrap box and threw out most of the small pieces.
Daddy was sick with a bad case of vertigo this afternoon when he woke up from nap so it was good that he didn’t go up to the airstrip.  (He usually goes up whenever the plane comes.)  He is still not feeling well this evening.  It makes me feel sad and lonely when he is sick, besides having the burden of doing extra work.  I do hope he doesn’t get sick when we travel.
“3Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: 4And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.  5To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?  6They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship.  7They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.”  Isaiah 46:3-7

October 20 and 21.  Today is Wednesday, October 21.  I don’t know if I remember much of what happened yesterday, other than the fact that it got to be after 10:00 last night, and I still hadn’t had time to write in my journal.  But I was much too tired by then and went right to bed after washing up.  I remember that it had been a long hard day.  So many things to do.  Would we ever be ready in time to leave?  The first thing we did was laundry.  I was thankful that there were only two loads.  After that it was cleaning and packing, cleaning and packing.  Sunny and Peninnah spent the day looking after the door and doing a couple work projects for us.
In the morning, Phinehas came by.  I had hardly seen him since school was out so I talked with him a while.  Daddy was busy talking with Amos and David.  Daddy said it looks like David and Amos are going to make a good team.  They are spending quite a bit of time together and striving to work together in unity.
Before Phinehas left, he had talked with the two girls, and the three came to us with a special request.  They wanted to know if the school students could all come and spend the night since it would be their last time to be with us.  We didn’t see any problem with that so around 7:30 or so in the evening, the students (except Esau) and a number of other youth started arriving with their blankets, etc., ready to bed down for the night.  We enjoyed hearing them sing while we were busy working.  How I will miss hearing them sing!
We woke up to their singing this morning too.  Then they wanted us to come and shake their hands one last time before we left.  After they sang the farewell song again, Daddy and I went out to shake hands with them, although it was more hugs and weeping than handshakes.
After lotu, Esau came in and hugged me for a while, and we talked a bit.  I sought to encourage him to keep his eyes on the Lord and do the work that God has called him to do.  I have gone through many trials with Esau over the past few years which has created a special bond with him.  Have praised God for the changes seen in his life this past year.  He is a very tenderhearted young man, but also weak when a fiery trial comes along.  He kept saying “Yes, Mommy” as I talked to him.
While lotu was in progress, Daddy and I rushed around doing the rest of the packing, taping up, locking up suitcases, weighing up, cleaning up, whatever needed to be done.  The house was left in a bit of a mess.  Around 9:30, MAF called and said the plane was on its way.  We got people busy carrying cargo up to the airstrip before we ourselves went up.  My back and legs were in a lot of pain today.  Apekio was on my left hand and Silvia on my right, holding my hands as we walked and wept together.  We walked very slowly because of my legs and back.
It was a little before 10:00 when we got up to the top of the airstrip.  I was thankful for the foot locker to sit on.  The sun was very hot.  I held the umbrella up for a while for a little shade.  It must have been after 10:30 when the plane finally arrived.  Then the pilot had a long wait while there were more handshakes, hugging, and weeping.  Dallas had taken the camera before we left the house and took quite a few pictures.  He was the last one to hug me after he gave the camera back before we left.  He, too, kept calling my “Mommy.”  I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dallas in the ministry one of these days.  He truly has a heart for serving the Lord.
How I will miss my twelve special grandchildren!  I said good-bye to the beautiful Owena mountains too.  But how beautiful heaven will be!  And we’ll all be there together – no more good-byes.
Just before we boarded the plane, David prayed, thanking the Lord for our bringing them the Gospel and asking God’s blessing upon our travels.  The pilot, Remi, waited very patiently while everyone said “Good-bye” to us.  My last memory is the sad face at the window opposite my plane seat – Esau saying his final good-bye.
It was about 11:45 when we arrived at Aiyura and going on 12:30 when we got to the WA (Wycliffe Associates) center where we are staying for a couple days until we get papers taken care of for shipping our goods.
Even though we were late for lunch, Yara (manager of the WA center) had held some lunch for us.  I was utterly exhausted and took two naps this afternoon.  Daddy just had a short nap and then went over to the shipping center to see Tai about getting the papers we still need in order to ship things.
When Daddy came back (after my first nap), we went for a little walk together to the store to try to find something to snack on.  It was a very slow walk as my legs are very weak today.  All I could find at the store to eat that was somewhat affordable was a package of rice crackers.  Bought those, and Daddy got a can of iced tea.  Then we stopped by the fast food area and got an ice cream cone - coffee flavour.  Tasted good.
When we got back from our little walk, we worked on filling out the shipping forms.  After that, I was ready for my second nap.  Slept until almost 6:00 - supper time.  We had rice with beef stir fry for supper and also salad.  Little cheese cakes were served for dessert.  Enjoyed meeting the other guests - James who works with Fuji-Xerox; Fabian who goes around to different villages and does gospel recordings, and Fiona from Australia who has spent a short time here helping in finances.
After supper, I took a shower.  Wonderful!  The first shower I’ve had in almost a year.  Now I’m getting tired again so will probably make it an early-to-bed evening.
“The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”  Isaiah 50:3

October 17.  Very warm again today with blue sky and sunshine.  Turned cloudy this afternoon.  The church is praying for rain as everything is getting quite dry.
In Mike’s teaching this morning, he talked about the importance of the husband loving his wife as Christ loved the church.
Didn’t get quite as much done today as I would have liked, but am thankful to have gotten the Sunday school cupboard all organized.  Nuanda and Ana and a couple of the children came to visit for a while later in the morning.  After they left, I made fish patties for dinner and mixed together ingredients for cookies.
After nap, my hair needed to be washed.  Then I only had time to do a few other little things before finishing the cookies.  During that time, Miriam came for a brief visit with little Sisaria.  Sisaria seems to be a very happy little baby.  She smiled and laughed almost the whole time she was here.
“34Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me.  35I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  Acts 20:34,35

October 18.  Going on 10:00 already.  We have had a full day.
I saw yesterday that one of the red lily plants was in full bloom, so this morning, I went out and picked it to put in the meeting room.  There were seven lovely red lilies on the stem.
The men didn’t tell Daddy until this morning that they wanted him to preach this morning.  He was prepared, however, and preached on Epehsians 4:11-14.  He challenged each one (pastors, deacons, all church members) to be obedient to God’s Word and to do their part to help strengthen the church so that God might bless and increase them more and more.
There were 33 who came to the altar to pray after the message.  We pray that they will not forget the decisions they made and will put their whole hearts into serving the Lord and doing their part in building His church.
After that, Daddy presented David to the church and gave him his ordination certificate which he hadn’t received before.  Then Daddy and David laid hands on Amos and prayed for him, after which Daddy gave him his certificate.  Then a number of people came and gave Amos gifts.
Mata and Amos had cooked a meal for the church so after the meeting, the people all ate together.  The afternoon meeting was quite long as each of the three pastors took time to give a testimony, to express their sorrow about our leaving, and to thank us for coming and Emmanuel Baptist Church for sending us.
Amos has exhibited a very humble attitude in his acceptance of being chosen as pastor, and we trust that he will maintain that spirit.
After the meeting, there were lots of hugs and tears.
The main thing I’ve been trying to do today is get pictures sorted out so our workers who look after the door tomorrow can glue them into scrapbooks.  These will be pictures for use in the Sunday school lessons on creation.
This evening, Daddy met with the men again for a short time.  Before they started, I showed them all the things that are in the Sunday school cupboard and in the church cupboard.  After they were done meeting, we showed them other things around the house that will be left here for the use of the church.
Also got outreach notebooks ready for Esau and for Phinehas and printed a few more outreach lessons for them.
“18And the day following Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were present.  19And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.”  Acts 21:18,19

Encouraging, Teaching, and Exhorting

October 15.  Very cold again this morning, but didn’t take long for the day to warm up.
Quite a busy day.  Lots of people coming and going to buy things.  Daddy and I kept busy cleaning in the house.  I was thankful to have gotten all of the pantry/storage room cleaned out by noon.  Worked more on the office this afternoon and have a little bit to go yet in the office.
Dallas and Bonita worked on sales, and Sosthenes helped too.  We also gave Sosthenes a couple little jobs to do to help us in the house.  Sunny came in late this afternoon to look at sale things, and I asked her to prepare the greens for us that one of the ladies had brought today.
Daddy met this evening with the pastors and deacons, seeking to encourage, teach, and exhort them before we leave.  He will need to meet again another evening to finish up the things he wants to go over with them.
I printed out copies of several different tracts to give to Dallas and others for use with outreach.
“20And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have shewed you, and have taught you publickly, and from house to house, 21Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.”  Acts 20:20,21

October 16.  49º this morning, but warmed up quickly and was quite hot today.  Not as much wind as usual.
It gets lighter earlier in the morning now which is a blessing.  We were up before 5:45.  Had breakfast and quiet time and got ready to do laundry.  Even before I finished hanging out the clothes, I was getting quite warm and was happy to get back inside.
While I was hanging clothes, Daddy was overseeing the sales.  There was quite a crowd waiting out here long before time for sales to start.  Sunny and Peninnah looked after sales today, and Sosthenes looked after the door.  Today was the last day.  I am thankful for that.
Today was a very stressful day too, trying to work on arrangements for getting out and to coordinate everything with housing.  Jason did get in today with the twin otter, and Daddy talked with him again about our need to get to Aiyura and then to Goroka.  He was having a stressful day too, being the only twin otter pilot in Goroka right now, with Richard and Holgar gone for a break.  However, he was more than willing to be a blessing and help work things out for us.  He said that’s what he is here for is to serve people.  We are very thankful for his help even when he was having a stressful day.  That means the next few days we’re really going to having to give it all we’ve got to get everything done.
Had to dig the paper cutter back out of the suitcase today so I could cut the tracts I had printed last night.  Also had to get out the long arm stapler and later staples to go in it.  Still have a few more of the tracts to staple.  Daddy helped by folding the tracts after they were stapled.
Early this evening, Esau and Jaydine came for a short visit.  I had just finished the baby afghan today so had that ready to give them along with some other baby things, the king’s clothes that Esau wore in the Daniel drama and wanted to have, and the little saucepan that Jaydine had paid for.  Mainly they came to have me pray for them and for the baby.  The baby has already turned so they expect her to have the baby any time before the end of the month.  They want me to think of a boy’s name and a girl’s name to use when the baby is born.
“27For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.  28Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.  29For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.  30Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.  31Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears.  32And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.”  Acts 20:27-32

A Lot to Do in a Week's Time

October 13.  52º this morning, but very warm this afternoon.  Cooling down a lot already this evening before 7:00.
A busy day in the sale room for the girls.  We certainly are thankful to have them helping because it was a busy day for us in here sorting through things too.  ALMOST done now going through EVERYTHING in our bedroom.  What a job!
SIL finally did come today - mid-afternoon; and John and Margaret were able to get to town.  Daddy also finally got in touch with the flight coordinator at SIL, and they said they can take us out to SIL on the 26th, the day we had requested.  However, there are no flights to get us to Goroka until the 30th at this point.  That won’t give us much time in Goroka to get things done.
“5Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein.  6I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles; 7To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.”  Isaiah 42:5-7

October 14.  Very strong cool winds today, although the temperature was warm.  MAF came today to get coffee and a sick person, but they couldn’t land because the winds were too strong.  Consequently, the coffee and the sick person are still here.
This morning, Amos finished giving the applications for Acts chapter 20.  It has been a good chapter for the season, with teaching both for the missionary and the elders of the church.  It is also the chapter I am on in my evening Bible reading.
After lotu, Daddy announced to the church that Friday will be the last day of sales.  So most everyone stayed after the meeting to buy things.  There was hardly anything left out there to buy so Daddy and I rushed around finding everything we could that needed to go.  People bought things up as fast as we took them out there.  There was hardly anything left by mid-morning, and we didn’t really have anything more to take out there.
I was thankful to have finished today everything I need to do in our bedroom.  Late afternoon, I came back to the office and hopefully we can finish up in here by tomorrow afternoon.  Or even tomorrow morning.  We are hurrying as fast as we can because we may have to leave here a week from today.  SIL can get us to Aiyura on the day we scheduled, but they can’t get us to Goroka until a couple days later than we wanted, and that only on a charter.  MAF can’t get us that week because they have a conference all week at Aiyura, but they can get us next Wednesday to Aiyura, and Jason will see about getting us from there to Goroka a couple days later (Friday).  So we have a lot to do in a week’s time.  It can only be done with the Lord’s help and strength.
“Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof.”  Isaiah 42:10

Good Preaching and a Church Business Meeting

Note:  These journal entries take us back a few days and recount some of the happenings that occurred during Mom and Dad's last days among the Owena people.  Mom and Dad are now in the town of Goroka resting before they begin their long journey back home to the USA.  They did hear from the people in Owena since they went out to the town, and they heard that God is still working in the church.  One person was saved this Sunday.  Thank you so much for your continued prayers for them!

October 11.  The morning was very cool with lots of clouds and wind.  The afternoon was warmer with more sunshine.
After breakfast and quiet time this morning, I stapled the Bible portions that I had printed for Dallas and the four girls.  Then Daddy turned on the generator, and I scanned a couple little pictures to enlarge and print for a coming Sunday school lesson.
Shortly before church time, Daddy had one of his vertigo attacks so went back to bed until time for the preaching.  David preached this morning, building on James 1:22 and referring to other verses with cross references about the same subjects.  He did a good job, and we were pleased.  The afternoon meeting was a business meeting.
Daddy took charge of the business meeting, which was for voting whether or not to receive David back as pastor and to ordain Amos as pastor.  The vote was unanimous for receiving both of them.
After my nap, and after the meeting, I sorted through some of the picture files and got them better organized.  Will be needing sets of pictures for the next set of Sunday school lessons which are on creation.  Have found a few scrapbooks, and maybe the girls will glue some of the pictures into the scrapbooks when there aren’t any customers at the sale.
“And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.”  Acts 19:18

October 12.  Cool and cloudy most of the day and quite cold this evening.
Today was laundry day.  Even though there wasn’t much sun, the Lord sent plenty of wind to dry to clothes.
All four girls were here this morning looking after the sales, and they were kept busy the whole time.  Graham and Sosthenes were in for a while too.  Daddy and I kept busy doing as much sorting and packing as we could around the house.  Daddy had to take time out to talk with Ari this morning, and later to talk with Amos and David.
Sunny and Graham came this evening to practice on the computer.  After doing dishes, Graham also helped take down the cupboard that was above the kitchen sink.  Elijah and Sera have bought the cupboard.
“19Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.  20So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.”  Acts 19:19,20

Flying Out!

10/20/2015

Mom and Dad fly out of Owena village sometime this afternoon or evening (our time; Wednesday their time). There are lots of things that need to "fall into place" for them to get everything done before they come back to the USA. They will first be flying out to the Wycliffe mission compound (SIL) where they will get some belongings shipped back to the States. After that they would like to go to Goroka for a few days of rest before leaving. They leave Papua New Guinea November 4th (the third our time), and, after making a few stops, should arrive in Charlotte on November 14th.
Thank you so much for praying for them.

October 8.  We were thankful for Bonita’s and Peninnah’s help today.  They both stayed all day (except during our nap time) and took care of people coming and going.  We had to be out there now and then to talk to people or answer questions, but we were able to get a bit more done in the house even though it doesn’t look like it.  All the office shelves above the desk are now cleaned off, plus we started going through the file cabinet and papers that are still on the bookshelf.  Threw a lot more papers away so will probably have another big burning in a couple days.
John and Margaret came this afternoon and got all the books and also the bunk bed.  They are both going to town tomorrow.  Tomas will also be leaving tomorrow to be with Philemon.  One of the college staff had called for him to come.
“And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized.”  Acts 18:8

October 9.  No more rain for several days now.
A lot of people around today so Peninnah and Bonita were quite busy this morning.  Some of the men started early this morning cutting grass on the airstrip, or I should say, cutting down the tall weeds - not much grass growing.  Later in the morning, there was quite a number of men working together, and they finished about 2/3 of the work.  The community had met together yesterday, and one thing they decided was to cut the airstrip today.  David said the weeds are very tough and hard to cut, and his hands were hurting.
Many other people were around because SIL was scheduled to come in today with a load of cargo for Tomas and somebody else.  It was after noon when the plane finally came, and he had a hard time when he landed because of the winds.  Tomas went out with a load of coffee.  The plane was supposed to come back for John and Margaret and more coffee, but the winds were much too strong so they are going to try to come back on Monday.
The first thing I did after breakfast and quiet time was make some chocolate chip cookie bars for Daddy.  I wanted to do that before the day got too busy.  Next I cleaned out all the bilums, tote bags, and such like that were in the storage closet.  Most of them had rags in them so I just set the big rags in a pile on a shelf and put the smaller rags in a plastic bag.  Then I put the bilums out on the sale table.
Finished cleaning out the top drawer of the file cabinet (there wasn’t much left to do) and then Daddy brought out the three boxes (one by one) of papers they were filed away in the storage closet.  We spent most of the day going through those and threw tons more papers away.  There are now two large garbage bags full of papers waiting to be burned.  Papers that were blank on the back were put into the scrap paper box; and this afternoon, Daddy sorted those into piles of same size papers.  I divided them into small stacks and put each bundle into a clear plastic bag for give-aways on the sale table.
After supper, I also started cleaning out the bottom drawer of the file cabinet, and cleaned out a couple boxes that were under the desk.  Those two boxes didn’t take long to clean out as they just had spiral notebooks (small and large), note pads, and filler paper, all of which were put out for sale.
As I was finishing up that job, Dallas and the four girls came to talk to us.  At first we couldn’t figure out what they wanted.  As we continued to question them, they said all they wanted was for us to give them our blessing like we gave to the church and to remember to pray for them.
“9Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace: 10For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.”  Acts 18:9,10

October 10.  Just a little rain during the early morning hours.
Mike continued teaching this morning on the role of husband and wife, but emphasized the importance of always doing the will of the Father, just as Christ did.
I got busy right away with the sorting, cleaning, packing business.  Rolled the rest of the suitcases into the guest room and got them up onto the bed with the others so they are all together where we can easily reach them and more easily pack them evenly.  Today I concentrated on the kitchen area.  Rearranged and cleaned the tall cupboard to make the best use of space.  Moved a lot of things off the cupboard above the sink and put them into the tall cupboard.  Some things went onto the sale table.  As soon as I can get the rest of the stuff off from there, we can take that cupboard down and give it to Elijah and Sera.  Cleaned out much of the lower cupboard space, got rid of some things, and moved the pots and pans off the rolling cart and into that cupboard so we can sell the rolling cart.
This afternoon, I also washed my hair and made tortillas.
For sit-down time, I went through a few more files in the bottom drawer of the file cabinet.  Just a few files left to go.
“And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.”  Acts 19:10

Packing and Sorting and Selling

October 5.  Very cool again today with just a little bit of sunshine.
A relatively quiet day.  A few people came in the morning to buy things, some in the middle of the day before our nap, and others at the end of the day.  Dallas and Thania helped this morning, and Bonita and Graham in the afternoon.  I started cleaning out all the craft stuff in the bedroom closet this morning.  A few things were packed to send or take home, some were put out for sale, some put into a give-away box to take to people in town, and some thrown away.  Also wrote a couple more e-mails this morning and sent those out.  Did more sorting through the craft stuff after nap and also talked with people who came to buy.
Late morning, Daddy and I went for a walk up the airstrip and back. The air was very cool.  I was glad I had worn my light jacket.  I ended up putting it on my head to keep the wind out of my ears.
Graham is here working this evening and then will work at the computer.  Don’t know where Sunny is.
“And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.”  Acts 16:34

October 6.  Warmer today with more sunshine and blue sky.  Cleaned out more of the craft closet plus things in the bathroom cupboards.  Sorted through the rest of the photos.  Finished packing the foot locker.  Looked after customers.
Mid-morning, I went for a walk with Daddy, but my walk ended up to be quite short.  My legs were hurting too much today for me to go very far.  After getting out to the airstrip, I came back to the house, and Daddy went on farther.
Renko and Onko came with their two youngest children from Waisara today to visit us.  They two said they were just babies when we first came, but they heard many stories from their parents about how things changed here in Owena after we came with the Gospel.
“11These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.  12Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.”  Acts 17:11,12

October 7.  Sunny and warm again today, but cloudy this evening.  So it shouldn’t get as cold tonight.
In lotu this morning, Amos went through the applications which he didn’t get a chance to do last week for Acts chapter 20.  One emphasis was the missionary’s responsibility to teach and encourage the elders of the churches he has established.
After lotu, I let the school students who were here pick out school books to take home.  There were so many of them left over from grades one and two.  Then they took care of all the people who were waiting to buy things.  Daddy and I helped where needed, and I also folded clothes and cleaned out a few little things here and there.  Daddy helped me move some of the suitcases into the guest room so they can be up on the bed frame in there and easier to pack.
Around 10:00, everyone was gone, and I was ready so sit down a while so started on September’s progress report.  Before lunch, I took all the trash out and created quite a hot fire with all the papers and photos that had been thrown away.
We wanted to try to get a lot of the office cleaned out today, but didn’t get much done.  People came and went at other times during the day, and that makes a big demand on our time.  Tomorrow we will see if a couple of the students would like to stay full time so they can be here to answer the door when people come.  We can pay them a certain amount for the day, and hopefully can be free to get more packing done.
John and Margaret came this afternoon.  They are going to buy the rest of the school books to put in their school library.  We gave them the bad news that the drum is going bad in the printer they had paid for.  A message came up last night saying the drum was nearing the end of its life.  They think they still want to take it and buy a new drum, but we will let them use the money they paid for it to get the bunk bed if they want it.
Margaret had made a couple nice bilums, one for us and one for some special friends.  They are also going to try to get an e-mail account so want our e-mail addresses.  It will be a blessing to be able to keep in touch with the church here in Owena through them as well.
This evening, we boxed up all the school books so John can send someone to pick them up tomorrow.
Youth are here this evening for their meeting.
“24God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; 25Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; 26And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; 27That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: 28For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.  29Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.  30And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: 31Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.”  Acts 17:24-31
