August 14. Woke up to a cold morning, around 53º. Got the fire going, and then got dressed and took care of my morning needs, including breakfast. Did some exercises and had quiet time. Then I heard voices in the meeting room.
Amos started lotu around 7:20. We sang a few songs, and then he started teaching from the book of Acts. He seemed nervous at first, but after a while he relaxed and did okay.
Tomas was still not here. Rebeka said he has malaria now and is quite weak. Sleeps a good part of the time.
We started school somewhere between 8:30 and 8:45. Finished phonics class early and math class about the usual time. There were several new things to learn in math class today. It seems like they give them a bunch of new things all at once — deciding what coins to use to make a certain amount of toea, borrowing twice in a subtraction problem, the nine multiplication table. During the last class they cut out the map pieces they had colored last week and glued them in the right places on their map pages in their social studies books. It took quite a while to get those all cut out so it was still 12:30 before we finished school today. It was really quiet in there while everybody was cutting and gluing so I put a music tape on for everyone to listen to. I finished grading today’s work while they were cutting and then helped Bonita with her cutting since she was the farthest behind.
After school, Steve, Esau, and Dallas cut firewood. It turned out to be very warm this afternoon. After my nap, I washed my hair, and then did some printing — Bible test papers for tomorrow, the next John lesson, and copies of the drama to start going over with the students. After that, I put the John lessons in their folders and started getting things ready for tomorrow’s classes. Had to fix a mistake on the verse visual (had left a word out) and cut little cards for the students to make flash cards tomorrow for the nine multiply facts.
After my supper, I finished getting things ready for tomorrow. I discovered I didn’t have a copy of the teacher’s lesson for the next lesson in John so took time to print that out, plus a couple lessons ahead. Then made corrections in the computer on future lessons so they will be ready for making the students’ copies next time.
“14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” Romans 10:14,15
August 15. The Lord gave us another lovely day. Very cold again this morning, but the sun was up early, and there was sunshine and blue sky most of the day. We did get some sprinkles of rain a couple times this afternoon.
Daddy called around 6:45. It was good to hear his voice. There are no good generators in town so he is going to see if we can get our old one back here soon and try putting a new voltage regulator in for now.
I wondered if I was going to get to eat breakfast this morning as there were various interruptions. Just when I was about to fix my cereal, Elisapet’s mother came to see if I wanted any popo. I told her I would look at them so she went to get them. One was definitely too green, but the other was okay. Then she asked if I wanted a pumpkin. Yes, indeed! I would be delighted to have a pumpkin. So she went to get that. It was a really nice pumpkin too. I had been praying for a nice vegetable — we have had lots and lots of greens lately. Greens are nice, but it is nice to have something different too. I took bites of breakfast in between her coming and going. Since the door was open for Elisapet’s mother, some of the school kids came early — before 7:30. I guess they didn’t realize what time it was with the weather so nice. They got their school books out, but then saw that the clock only said 7:30 + or -, so they went back outside until later. By the time I finally finished my breakfast, I just had a few minutes left to do a couple other little things. The fire needed to be tended to as well. I was thankful that I had done my exercises and prayer time earlier this morning. Was able to read my Bible while I was eating.
Everyone but Dallas said their Bible verse already this morning. I didn’t think they would be ready yet since this was only the second day so they surprised me. Then we reviewed our lessons in Daniel and had a test. The test was a little harder than usual so I graded on a scale. Phinehas and Sosthenes each missed two — that was the top grade — so I graded all the others accordingly.
I got most of the grading done during school. Just had to finish the math worksheets and grade their English exercises. Did that right after my lunch, before nap. I was pretty tired at nap time today so slept a little beyond what I expected. It was after 3:00 when I got up. Wanted to get out in the sunshine while I could so did that first. When I came back in, I put water on to heat for dishes; and while it was heating, I got the everything ready for starting the fire in the morning. Started getting things ready for school tomorrow too.
When the water was hot, I did the dishes. By then, it was time to start supper. That pumpkin certainly looked like it would be a nice one for soup. I wonder if I can cut it. Yes, soup sounded like a good thing for supper. First I put some rice on to cook since that would take a little longer to get done than the pumpkin. While the rice was cooking, I worked on the pumpkin. It took some effort, but I did manage to get it all cut up and peeled. It was a beautiful orange pumpkin. I cut the whole thing up, peeled it, removed the core, cut it into little pieces and added it to the pot. Now I would have pumpkin and rice soup. I was so thankful for the pumpkin. Yesterday I finished up the greens I had been eating since the beginning of the week, and I thought I was going to have to eat canned beans today. The Lord was so gracious to send me that pumpkin. And the soup tasted so good.
After eating a couple bowls full of soup, I finished getting things ready for school tomorrow. Then I put water on for bath and sorted through some coloring books while the bath water was heating. Took my bath and had my crypto drink. Now it is nearly 8:30 and time for a snack.
