So Thankful for Sunday, A Day of Rest

Note:  This will likely be the last journal note post made to this blog.  Mom and Dad are scheduled to return from Virginia on Wednesday.  After their return, I will be starting to post on their new blog, Labors of Joy.  I will post a link to the new blog when it is ready.

March 6.  I was glad when they said unto me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”  I was so thankful for Sunday -- to be able to meet with God’s people, sing hymns of praise together, and be refreshed, rebuked, reminded, and my soul restored through the teaching and preaching of the Word.  This past week was so busy.  Thank you, Lord, for a day of rest.
Mrs. Ogle had charge of the ladies’ Sunday school class and played part 2 of session 18 of a series of lessons by Jim Berg called “Taking Time to Quiet Your Soul.”  The title of today’s lessons was “Overcoming Your Anxiety and Fear.”  It contained some very good food for thought.
In the morning service, Pastor Ogle preached from James 1-4 on trials, “Not Fun But Necessary.”
This evening, Timothy Makin preached on the Word of God, giving a broad overview of what the Word of God says about itself and its importance in our lives.  “The Word of God is a written glimpse of God’s character. In order to obey God’s Word as He prescribes, we must obey God’s Word in totality and in faith.”
“7And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.  8And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.  9And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: 10Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.”  Mark 11:7-10

Long, Tiring, but Profitable Days

March 4.  After 9:30 p.m.  It has been a very long day, and we are very, very tired; but now Daddy has gone back to the apartment to see if he can Skype Amos because Christy sent a text saying that Amos had tried to call.
We slept pretty well last night on the sofa bed.  It is the most comfortable sofa bed we have ever slept on.  When I woke up this morning, I knew my legs and back weren’t going to go anywhere, and we had a lot to do. The only thing to do would be to take Ibuprofen, which I don’t really like to do, but I did.  Never would have made it through the day without it.
Around 9:00 this morning, we went over to C&C’s place to go through some books and pick up some things they already had packed.
It was going on 11:30 when we left there.  Dropped things off at the house that we had brought from C&C’s house.  Then headed for the apartment to have lunch.  We didn’t have any lunch fixin’s at the house.
After lunch and a nap, we went out to shop - quick stop at Big Lots - didn’t find anything we were looking for.  Next stop was K-Mart.  Found a few little things there.  Last of all, we went to WalMart where we got most of what we needed.  Praise the Lord for His provision for these household items.
By then we were quite tired.  Still had to fix and eat supper.  The  spaghetti, however, was at the other house, and the meat and other things were at the apartment.  Well, we’ll go to the apartment and load up the car with other belongings, including things from the fridge and freezer.  Then go over to the house and fix supper.
By the time we had finished loading up things, we were both exhausted.  Considering that we would still have to unload after arriving back at the house, put away things that go in fridge and freezer, and then wait for supper to be prepared, we decided to stop at Subway and have our supper there.  We are glad that we did that.
It was after 7:00 by the time we got home.  Put away things in the fridge and freezer and hung up clothes that we had brought.  Now it is almost 10:00.  Time for bed.
“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”  Revelation 4:11

March 5.  It has been another long and very tiring day; but I’m thankful for a good night’s rest last night.
This morning I had to wash my hair, and it was also pancake morning.  However, when we opened the box with the electric griddle we had bought the other day, we discovered one leg of the griddle was broken off. Since I had already started making the pancake dough, I finished mixing it up and then cooked just enough pancakes for today in a little non-stick skillet.  Put the rest of the mix in the fridge for tomorrow.
By the time breakfast and Bible reading were done, it was time to head to Kings Mountain.  Took my prayer book along with me.  We were a few minutes late getting to WWNTBM office where we met with Andrew M. to do the recording for our presentation.  Daddy and I had quite a time getting through it - mistakes, coughing, phone ringing, other interruptions - but finally made it to the end.  Then Andrew played it back to make sure everything was okay.  There are a couple other places where he will have to splice things out.
After we left there, we went to Roses and found some more household items we needed.  Then to the apartment to load up more of our things.  Next to WalMart for lunch at Subway and to purchase a few more household items.  And last of all to K-Mart to exchange the electric griddle.
It was about 3:00 when we finally arrived home, ready for a good nap.  Our landlords were here installing air-conditioner window units.  They also trimmed the lower branches off the trees out back.  They said the electric company will come and trim the upper branches because there are power lines running through them.
After unloading the van, we took a short nap.  Sleep evaded me because of too much hip pain.
After nap, we worked in the kitchen - washed up all the storage containers and the cookeware set we had bought yesterday, plus the tableware and silicone scrapers we had bought today; washed out drawers and one cupboard; lined drawers with shelf liner; dried and put away containers, cookware, and other things
C&C came for a while and looked over the house to see what the space is like, what storage is available, etc.  We also talked over their move - what large items to bring, what to put where, etc.  Lord willing, they can get moved in by the time we leave for VA next weekend.
This evening, I started filing some things in the file cabinet.
Christy took home my computer this evening so she could get our e-mails in, since this house isn’t set up with internet connection yet. So wrote these journal notes in a notebook to be transferred to this computer file.
“And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation….”  Revelation 5:9

Lots of Work and A Good Night's Sleep

March 2.  I guess I was really, really tired last night.  Went to bed a little bit early, fell into a deep sleep, and never woke up until 2:30 a.m.  Don’t usually sleep more than 2 to 2 1/2 hours before waking up after I first go to bed.
Daddy went out this morning to see about getting the utilities transferred over to our name.  He learned that, since the house was (used to be) a duplex and has two separate utility bills that he would also have to make two separate security deposits.  Not only that, each month, we will be charged two separate base fees for each service - sewer, water, recycling, electric, and trash.  And even though we would not be using gas because there are no gas facilities in use in the house, they would still have to read the gas meter every month, and we would have to pay security deposit on it as well as a monthly base fee for the two units.  Expenses could be cut down if we paid $40 to have the gas meter removed.
After finding out all that, Daddy did not go ahead with the transfer today.  Shortly after he got home, I wrote an e-mail to our landlady explaining the situation, and Daddy also called and talked to her in person.  She was more than willing to help.  Right away, after their conversation, she got in touch with the city of Shelby to have the gas meter removed.  She also offered to pay half the deposit for us and we could pay her back later. However, since removing the gas meter cut the deposit down considerably, we thanked her and told her that wouldn’t be necessary.
While Daddy was out, I packed a few more things that could be taken over to the house.
Around 11:30, Mel came to get Daddy, and they went over to Waltons to get the furniture that was stored there.  They got back here around 12:30.  Mel dropped Daddy off and went on ahead to the house.  I went with Daddy in the van.  We were thankful for Mel’s help in getting all that unloaded, helping us set up the bed frame (which we may decide not to use), and setting up the water temperature on the water heater.
We left there around 2:00 - something.  Stopped at Subway and had a “raised without antibiotics rotisserie style chicken” sub on whole wheat.  Very good.  Next stop was Aldi to get a few groceries, and then to WalMart to get mostly household items.  Arrived home around 4:15 (?).  Daddy had a short nap before supper.  (I had had a little cat nap while waiting for Daddy to get back at noon.)
This evening, Bro. Ogle was gone, and Bro. Christenson did the preaching.  His text was Matthew 6:19-34, and his theme was “First Things First,” dealing with priorities in our lives.  It was a good, thought-provoking message.  The Redmonds were there again this evening.  They are still waiting on their vehicle (it has been six weeks), but have learned that it cannot be fixed.  It appears to be faulty construction.
“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches….”  Revelation 2:7,11,17,29

March 3.  A little after 9:00 p.m.  It has been quite a day.  Cloudy with cold winds.  A little bit of rain.
After having breakfast, washing a load of clothes, and having quiet time, I wrote an e-mail to C&C to have them order mattresses, hoping they might get here before we travel next weekend.
Then we started out for city hall to get the utilities transferred to our name.  Daddy was in the office for about a half hour talking with a worker and signing papers.  That done, we went sofa bed (or sleeper sofa) hunting so we could start sleeping at the house.  Cummings was close by so went there first, but they didn’t have anything.  Next stop was Badcock.  They had a couple sleeper sofas on special, but still a bit more than we felt we should pay.  Decided to check Sears but they didn’t have anything on the floor.
Back to the apartment for an early lunch and a much-needed nap.  After nap, we went to GNC to get some vitamins for Connie.  Thought about going to Laughlin after that to look for a sofa; but on the way, we saw the little store that sells new, used, and antique furniture.  “Let’s stop in there and see what they have.”  They had two sleeper sofas - a brown and a blue-gray.  The price was about half that of Badcock.  Praise the Lord!  We got the blue-gray one, a queen sofa.  The proprietors, Ernest and Tanya, were very friendly and helpful.  They were willing to deliver the sofa right away.
By the time all that was done, it was about 3:00.  Decided to do some shopping at WalMart before heading back to the house to have supper and pack up things to come back here for the night.  On the way back, we realized we hadn’t brought our bedsheets.  Another stop at WalMart to pick up a set of sheets.  We needed another set anyway.  WalMart not very busy this evening.
Did a little bit of unpacking and got our sofa bed made up for the night.  Soon it will be time to crawl in.  Ahhhh!  How welcome a good night’s sleep will be!
“Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.”  Revelation 3:10

March 1.  A nice warm day again today, but not as sunny as yesterday.  Clouds started building this afternoon, and we’ve had a little rain already.
Today was wash day and also our day out to Charlotte.  Daddy left here around 9:10 to get Connie. While he was gone, I looked for mattresses online.
We had planned to stop at Hobby Lobby on the way since Connie’s appointment was later this week; but by the time we left here, we thought we wouldn’t have enough time.  Got to Charlotte well enough ahead of time, however, so stopped at Neighborhood WalMart (close to the chiropractor) and did some grocery shopping.
To Dr. Schulman’s next for Connie’s adjustment, and then off to Trader Joe’s.  I got a different kind of salad for my lunch this week, called a crunchy salad (spinach and romaine leaves, pecan pieces, carrot and jicama pieces, cranberries), and it had plenty of dressing.  The dressing did a good job of cleaning out the sinuses.  Didn’t realize it had chipotle chili peppers in it until I started eating.  Then I looked at the ingredients.  Topped the salad off with some crackers we had bought at TJ’s.
Stopped at Chik-Fil-A at the Tryon exit for Daddy to get a grilled chicken sandwich.  From there we headed to Hobby Lobby in Gastonia.  Got some spray for my water color paintings, some  barrettes and alligator clips for making hair décor and glue for putting on the décor, and a couple craft books from the mark down section.
Last stop was SC for gasoline.  Had a little snack (grapefruit) and then a long nap.  Just could not make myself wake up.
My sister called this evening to share some good news regarding a matter we had been praying about. It was a blessing to hear how God is working and beginning to answer those prayers.
“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”  Revelation 1:3

Where God Has Put Us

February 29.  The last day of February.  What a beautiful, warm, sunny day the Lord gave us!  About mid-morning, Daddy and I went out to the bank to make a deposit.  Then to the police station to try to get a crime report on the area we’re moving into.  The one in charge was busy in a meeting, however, so we couldn’t get to see him.  Daddy had called him earlier and left a message too.  Both Daddy and Christy did see on a website that it is a low crime area, however.  (We never did hear back from the police department and later found out that this is not a low crime area.  But we believe this is where God has put us and that He has a ministry for us here.)
After that, we went on to the house.  The landlady came down to take care of the plumber who put hookups in for the washing machine.  She brought the lease with her and we signed that.  Then we had to go back to the bank to get a cashier’s check to pay for the first month’s rent and the security deposit.  Returned to the landlady with the check, and she gave us a copy of the lease, a receipt, and the keys.
From there, we went to Big Lots and got a few small items needed for the house.  Then back to the apartment for lunch and a nap.  After nap, we loaded up some things in the car and then went to Burkes where we got an over-the-door rack, a blinds cleaner, and thank you notes.  Made a quick run into Dollar Tree to pick up some dish soap, a dish towel, and dish cloths.  Then on to the new house.
While Daddy was bringing things inside, I was taking pictures of the house - inside and out.  After that, I cleaned the counter tops and some shelves, and washed the dishes.
The girls arrived shortly before we were done working.  Then we all came over here to the apartment. It was after 5:00 by then.  Cooked up some chicken for all of us for supper, and used some leftover spaghetti to make “macaroni” and cheese for Daddy and me.  Our vegetables are all gone so I had an extra helping of mac ‘n’ cheese.

February 28.  The Lord gave us a lovely day today, but we didn’t get to go out much.  Neither Daddy nor I went out to church today because of our colds (or flu, or whatever it is).
We listened to an Independence Day message online from last year from Central Baptist Church in Ocala, FL.  There were some wonderful quotes from the early days of our country that we would love to get and share.
Later in the morning, I took a nap.  We did go out for a short time this afternoon, as we had already made an appointment to look at a house in Shelby.  Right after Christy and Connie got back from church, we headed over there.  Met the owners who had bought and renovated an old house built in 1925. It is a three-bedroom two-bathroom house, and the bedrooms are fairly good size.  It [originally] was a duplex, with the one side having been added on around 1980.  The floors in that side go downhill a bit.  We actually spent quite a while there talking with the owners; and before leaving, we filled out an application.  It wasn’t long after we left that they called Daddy and asked him to come over with a proof of income.  They have decided to give us first choice to rent.  They will bring a lease tomorrow for us to sign, and then we can start moving in.
We are excited about the possibilities of ministry in the neighborhood!

Refreshing Fellowship

February 25.  Went to bed before 9:00 last night.  Had a terrible headache during the night, which finally died down early this afternoon.  Praise the Lord for some relief from that.  Haven’t felt so chilled today, but still not feeling well.  Went back to bed this morning after being up a couple hours.  Daddy went out shopping while I was sleeping.  I didn’t even hear him go out.
My brain was too foggy to do much on the computer this morning after I got up so just did some crocheting.  Also did the dishes.
Had another long nap this afternoon.  Afterward, I tried to find pictures for the marriage booklet. The CD drive was giving me some problems.  Finally got the GRN CD to work and copied those files onto a flash drive in case the CD drive goes bad all together.  Looked through the old files that were on the flash drive and deleted quite a few of them.
“1Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.  2Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.  3And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.”  I John 3:1-3

February 26, 2016.  Was feeling a little bit better today, but still pretty wiped out.  Went back to bed around 9:00 for another couple-hour nap.  Later I wrote out a ministry overview for Connie to put on our [new] blog.*
Had another nap in the afternoon, and then did the dishes.
Christy and Connie came later in the afternoon; and around 5:15, we left for Gastonia and the Rices’ house.  Stopped at Ingles in KM and got a pot of lavender-colored tulips to take to them.  It was a little after 6:00 when we arrived, but we had gotten into traffic just before exit 20 where we were to get off.  Then we went past the house because we couldn’t find any numbers.  We pulled into the driveway and around the back, and Connie sent Dawn a text to see if we were at the right place.  We were, and she told us to come around to the red door in front.
The Rices have two small dogs, a cat, and a cockatiel.  The children were in the kitchen helping to get things ready for supper.  One of their sons was making the dough for individual pizzas; and as the dough was ready, we each put together our own pizza, adding the toppings we wanted.  Then they finished baking them.  While we were waiting for the pizzas to get done, we chatted, and we munched on corn chips with hummus or spinach dip.
Their eldest was off working at Chik-Fil-A and wouldn’t be home until late.  Kevin was late getting home and had had somewhat of a hard day.  We enjoyed the time of fellowship together.  After eating, we sang a couple hymns; and Kevin read some verses from John 10, shared some thoughts and experiences, and prayed.
It was around 9:00 when we left.  Seemed like the evening went too quickly, and we hadn’t had enough time to fellowship.  I was thankful to get home, however, as, by that time, I had a terrible earache, and my throat was pretty sore.
“14And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him….  18We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.  19And we knowthat we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.  20  And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.  21Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.”  I John 5:14-21   Praise God, we can know!

February 22
.  The Lord gave us a nice warm day today, but cloudy.  We did see the sun peek out once for a few minutes, and then it was gone.  It was nice to get out for a stretch in the fresh air this morning.
Today we checked chapter 14 of Matthew and half of chapter 15.  I also wrote an e-mail.  Spent some time, too, on the “Bai Mi Maritim Husat?” (Who Will I Marry?) book.
“3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”  II Peter 1:3,4

February 24.  This morning after breakfast and quiet time, I started putting together the display board to set up in the churches when we travel.  We need to get a different kind of tape, though, to border the foam boards and strengthen the edges.
At 9:30, we left here for Greenville.  Ran into torrential rains along the way.  Because of poor visibility, we had to slow down for a while and even pulled over once for a few minutes.  We still got to the Smiths’ house around 11:00 and didn’t have any trouble finding it.  Michael and Janice Berbin came as well, and also Ed and Barbara Guerrant.  We enjoyed a good time of fellowship and lunch together.
Left there around 1:30, but it was 3:40 before we got home.  Crawled along for quite a few miles because of a road accident -- a tractor trailer overturned in the median.
Twenty-seven tornadoes reported in the south yesterday and today -- Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, even Pensacola, FL.  Texas had severe storms as well.  Torrential rains, strong winds, hail over many other parts of the southeast up into Virginia.  Daddy talked to his sister, and she said there was a tornado near where she lives.
Went to nap shortly after we got home.  Even though it was a warm day, I felt chilled so bundled up with two very warm blankets.  Have a terrible headache too.  Slept a couple hours, getting up a little after 6:00. Christy and Connie came and rode to church with their Dad.

Thankful for Time to Meet Together in the Lord's House

February 21.  Could not get to sleep for a long time last night.  Consequently, I did not get up very early this morning.  After shower, I fixed Daddy his pancakes.  Just fixed a bowl of fruit for myself.  Had quiet time. Wrote a thank you note.  And soon we were off to church.
Mrs. Surrett finished the lessons on “Seeking the Lord” this morning.  Mrs. J gave a testimony at the end which was a real blessing and encouragement.  The preaching was a great encouragement also.  I am always thankful when it is time to meet together in the Lord’s house and be refreshed and strengthened through the fellowship and the preaching of the Word.
This evening Pastor Ogle preached from John chapter 4, giving some preparation for reaching out to people for Friend Day.

Disappointment!

February 19.  The Lord gave us another lovely day.
Did one load of laundry this morning.  Then Daddy helped me clean the floors.  He took all the rugs outside and shook/swept them while I swept all the floors.  Then I mopped the floors, and he dried them.  I am happy to see all the floors nice and clean.
After that, we went out to look at a four-bedroom townhouse apartment on Cline Street.  It could have been a nice place if it had a manager that cared enough to make repairs and changes.  Daddy also called Crown Ridge, but there are no openings for two- or three-bedroom apartments.  So looks like we’ll go ahead and take the mobile home on Arlee.  Will take Christy and Connie over there tomorrow to look at the place with us and then tell Willie that we’d like to rent.
After nap this afternoon, we went out to Big Lots to see if they had any mattresses left with the sale price on the box springs because the sale ends tomorrow.  But there were none left, and they wouldn’t be getting any in for a couple weeks so we’ll have to look elsewhere.
Christy and Connie came shortly after we got back to the house.  Connie had me help her start making a new blog site for Daddy and me.*  We worked on that for a while, and I also spent time trying to transition all the slides so we can just use what we have in case no one has time to put the presentation together for us in a better way.
This evening, Daddy skyped his sister, and we enjoyed talking with her for a while.
“6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.  7Unto you therefore which believe he is precious….”  I Peter 2:6,7a

(*In a couple of weeks, Mom and Dad will be heading to Virginia for a meeting.  After they return, we will be starting to post on their new website, Labors of Joy.  It will be dedicated to their work and explain the new focus and goals of their continued ministry to the people of Papua New Guinea, even while living here in the USA.  The name of their Facebook page will also be changed to Labors of Joy.)

February 20.  I remembered to fix Daddy’s pancakes this morning.  :-)  Fixed some for myself too – with blueberries and pecans.  Topped those with banana, pomegranate applesauce, and yogurt.  Delicious!
After breakfast, I proofread the Sunday school lessons, wrote an e-mail to Ruthie, and started getting ingredients together for a cake.
Christy and Connie came around 9:30.  We were supposed to go look at the mobile home, but Willie wasn’t there so Daddy was told to call back later.  On their way here, C&C had seen a for rent sign pointing off highway 74 so we decided to check that out while we were waiting to call Willie back.  It was on Mark Drive, 907 1/2, the house down behind where we first lived when we came to NC.  Not a good place and not big enough.  Even the house up front where we lived before looked very much run down.
Daddy then pulled into Bojangles on the corner of Mark Drive and 74 and called Willie.  He had said he was going to hold the place for us until we came back on Saturday.  But he had gone off somewhere yesterday, and his daughter rented it out to someone else.  Apparently he hadn’t told his daughter to hold it.  That was a big disappointment.  Just seems like the Lord keeps shutting all the doors for some reason.  So we continue to wait.
Stopped at Office Depot on the way home, and Christy exchanged the printer she had bought last month.  It hadn’t been working properly.  The worker there said it sounded like there was some fault with the computer and gave her an equal exchange.
I got up from nap and finished making the cake and put it in to bake.  While it was baking, I put the corrections for the Sunday school lessons into the computer.  Took some pictures of Christy stuffing and stamping envelopes and Connie coloring pictures.  Then I crocheted for a little while before supper and again afterward until I came to the end of the first skein of yarn.
Did the dishes next.  Transferred a few pictures to the computer and fixed those up.  Added to our slide presentation the last few pictures that I’d been waiting for to complete that.
“For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.”  I Peter 3:12
