Sunshiney Saturday

August 24.  I had an inkling, when I felt the chilly air outside yesterday afternoon, that it was going to get pretty cold last night.  Daddy said it wouldn’t get cold, because there were clouds in the evening.  But it did - 49º this morning.  We praise the Lord for a nice sunshiney Saturday though, and that all the clothes got dry out in the sunshine this time.  We didn’t have to hang any in the house.

People were here at 7:00 for lotu this morning.  Tomas was in charge and spoke on The Bread of Life.  He does a good job of keeping the message short, yet being simple, thorough, and accurate.  Then we had prayer time.

By 8:30 this morning, Sunny and Bonita had started washing clothes.  Phinehas and Dallas swept the meeting room.  The men cut the grass around the toilet (outhouse).  Then Matthew and David moved the skylight to another part of the meeting room roof.  I finished cleaning up the guest room.  Daddy worked on getting the other battery light put up in the guest room, only to find that the bulb is missing.  He will see if Brad can get one from CRMF and bring it in on Tuesday.

When I was ready for a sit down break, I cut up the 9 division flash cards and trimmed the pieces for the 9 division chart.  Then I glued the chart together.  When the girls finished washing the clothes, I went out to hang them up.  The sunshine felt good.  I was hot when I came inside, but no more Emergen-C.  Refreshed myself with a glass of cool water and sat down and relaxed a few minutes.

Assigned the girls some other jobs to do while I was hanging clothes and afterward - cleaning doors, washing the guest room floor (I had already swept it), sweeping and washing the office and kitchen area, cleaning under the wood stove.  It was 12:00 before they left so they had had a busy morning.

Before dinner, I put a new tablecloth on the kitchen table.   I was thankful there were still leftovers.  I had planned to cook some carrots too, but never did get to that so we just finished up the leftover greens.

Nap was certainly welcome.  After nap, I got math lesson plans done.  Cut up a popo - half went into a pan to be cooked for my pancake syrup in the morning, and half went into a bowl for us to enjoy with bananas for snack.  Kristina came with some avocadoes.  Maybe our company will like avocadoes too.  Got the bathroom cleaned, also the chalkboard and the top of the drum in Connie’s room.  Found a nice rug with bears to put on top of the drum.  Glued the linoleum piece back down between the kitchen and laundry room.  Made some biscuits for my supper -- put onions in half of the dough.

After supper, I found some cloth pieces to cover the shelves in the guest room, and then cleaned off the desk top with some disinfectant spray.  Did the dishes and then husked the corn that was in the cupboard so there would be room to put away the avocadoes and a few bananas (left over from the last stalk).  There was only one sort of soft piece of corn so I didn’t cook any - put it all in a couple pans to be dried.  Now I am thankful for sit down time again.

Daddy has the fire going, heating water for baths tonight.  It feels like it is going to be cold again by morning, but shouldn’t be as cold as this morning.

August 22.  Very, very foggy this morning.  And very cool all day.  There were some short periods of sunshine here and there, but mostly clouds.  Daddy has kept the home fires burning all day long.

Before school this morning, I sorted out all the yarn and replenished what had been taken from the box.  Sosthenese came around early this morning for some glue for his shoe so we sent him on an errand - down to the haus sik to get us a loaf of bread, a piece of chicken, and 1/4 kilo butter.

All the students were here at the start of school this morning.  After reviewing our Bible verses, we finished the lesson in John and reviewed the two lessons that covered John 1:1-9.  Then they had a test.  It was quite a bit easier than the test they had on Daniel, and everyone got 100%.

They really seem to be enjoying learning about maps in social studies class.  They all did well on naming and writing the continents in order of size, and finding them on the maps and globe.

Jonathan cut firewood today.  Before we got to go to nap, Matthew came by to see about getting Soken out to town.  Well, there were no planes in the area; and now, 7:30 p.m., we hear the death wail starting so apparently he has just died.  He was just a young boy, somewhere around 15 years old.  So sad.  He was one of Marava’s sons.  They didn’t know what kind of sickness he had.  Erick seeks to share the gospel with them, but so far none of her family is saved except for her son Wiru who was adopted by Gibson after Jack’s death.

Finally got our nap.  Then I recorded grades, cut up the rest of the big popo and made popo crisp for our snack, had snack, did some printing, wrote e-mails (updates ready to send), put a pot of rice on to cook for supper, cooked the chicken with some onions and made a gravy to go on the rice.  Later I warmed up the greens that I cooked yesterday and we had our supper.

After supper, I had work to do in the schoolroom before doing dishes.  It was about 7:00 before I got the dishes done.  Then I practiced the new song the students will be learning, “Peman I Bin Kam”.

“Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer.”  Romans 12:12

August 23.  Yesterday was a rainy season day, and today was a dry season day.  Woke up to a cold, clear morning.  The air never did warm up that much today, but we thank the Lord for the sunshine.

After breakfast and quiet time this morning, I started out cleaning in the guest room.  Then I discovered some maps of various parts of the world and started looking through the maps to see which ones I can use for school.

The students all surprised me this morning and each one said the new Bible verse even though we just started learning it today.  Maybe they practiced it ahead of time.

This afternoon, after nap, I went out for a short stretch in the sunshine.  The sun felt good, but the air was quite chilly, and the wind was blowing in my ears so I did not stay out long.  Came in and did some scanning and printing for next week’s classes.  Had snack.  Spent the rest of the afternoon, and part of the evening too, grading lessons.

I was pouring the water for dishes right after supper, but the water didn’t look very hot.  I didn’t see any steam coming up from the water as I poured it.  So I checked it and it was only lukewarm.  I thought it had already gotten hot and that Daddy had turned it off.  But no, the burner was still on.  The bottled gas had run out.  So Daddy had to change the gas tank, and after that I had to wait for the dishwater to finish heating.  While I was waiting was when I finished the grading and recording of grades.

After I did dishes, I put water on for bath and worked on lesson plans while the water was heating.  Had bath and finished the phonics lesson plans for next week.  Then I got my lemon soda drink (the last of the nice lemons that Daddy brought home from town), and now it is after 8:00 already.

August 20.  Sunny and dry most of the day.  The sun felt very hot when I went outside this afternoon, and this evening it is raining.

Spent about a half hour doing more cleaning in the guest room before school this morning.  Need to finish getting everything organized before this weekend so I can have the girls clean in there.

Everyone was ready to say the new Bible verse this morning.  I gave them each a coffee candy.

The students seemed to enjoy their social studies class today.  We reviewed the difference between continents, countries, and provinces and states, and also reviewed North and South America and the three largest countries in each.  I let them take turns showing where the continents and countries are on a couple wall maps, on blank maps, and on the globe.  Then we read the new lesson which taught the other five continents and showed all the continents in order of size.  We spent some time learning the order and finding each of those on maps also.  I told them about our visitors, who will be coming next week, being from South Africa.  They are excited about having visitors come.

We finished classes around 12:00.  I asked Sunny to stay and prepare the greens that Desi had brought yesterday.  Then I warmed up leftover spaghetti and carrots and broccoli for our dinner.

I didn’t want to sleep as long at nap time as I did yesterday because I had lots to do this afternoon.  But I ended up zonking out anyway, and slept about 1 1/2 hours.  I think taking the ParaGone makes me sleep more, and also have been taking Ibuprofen for bad pain in my shoulder.

I did want to get out in the sunshine a little while so did that right away after I got up.  Then I graded the students’ math books, cut up part of a popo and a small pineapple for our snack and had snack.  I did not eat pineapple, but had popo and banana.  The pineapple is for Daddy.  Started grading the math worksheets while I was eating snack.  After that, I washed my hair and then started getting things ready for Steve’s birthday party tomorrow.  Had to find a party bag while it was still light and put a few little things in that for Steve’s gift.  Then I made cupcakes and got out the cups, drink mix, and other things for the party.

Then it was time to fix supper.  We just had tomato sandwiches again.  They tasted good with the nice fresh tomatoes from the Goroka market.

Then it was time to clean up the kitchen and do dishes.

“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another.”  Romans 12:10

August 21.  It is after 7:30 p.m.  We have had a busy day.  The Lord gave us a mixture of clouds and sun today.  Daddy started the fire again this afternoon because it was very cool and cloudy, and it was raining.  Then the sun came out again for a while.  But we are thankful for the fire in the wood stove so I can be warm for my bath tonight.  Also I had extra hot water for dishes which I needed because Janeth came just as I had gotten the water all ready to do dishes.  She wanted some yarn to make a new bilum for the coming baby - due next month.  And we spent quite a bit of time talking too.  So I had to add more hot water to my dish water after she left.

Before having my breakfast this morning, I had to make icing for the cupcakes and get those frosted.  Then I put a lolly in each cupcake and three Rokroks with each one.  Made the drink and everything was ready.  Then I had my breakfast.

After my breakfast and quiet time, still nobody was here for lotu so I did more work in the guest room until people came.  Since it was so foggy and dreary this morning, people were later than usual for lotu.  It was about ten to eight before Amos even started lotu.  We only sang one song.  He covered Acts 1:9-11.

At the end of school today, the students all enjoyed celebrating Steve’s birthday with him.  Daddy and I had our dinner while they were having their cake and cookies and peanuts.  While our dinner was heating, I finished grading their math books.

I slept a long time again at nap time today.  I think I just have three more days’ worth of ParaGone and maybe I won’t feel like sleeping so much after that.  I was hoping to go out for a stretch in the sunshine after nap, but the sunshine had pretty much disappeared by then.  I cut up some popo for our snack, and graded the students’ English exercises while I was eating snack.  Then I had to do some photocopying and printing.  While the computer was on, I also got the words to the new song put into the music.  Then it was time to get biscuits made for my supper as the others were all gone.

Daddy got a text message from Brad late this afternoon saying that there was an e-mail for Daddy from him about the generator.  It looks like he may be able to pick up the generator Friday from SIL and take it to Goroka.  Then it can come in here when his parents come.  We pray that it will work well enough for us to use for a while longer until we can get something else.

After dishes were done this evening, I still had the rest of the grades to record and things to get ready for school tomorrow.  I am thankful to have all that done now and to be able to sit down and relax a while.

Lots of Work and a Little Relaxation

August 18.  The Lord gave us a lovely day today.  Lots of sunshine which was really needed to recharge the solar battery after no sunshine yesterday.

I had almost finished cooking Daddy’s pancakes this morning before I found two good eggs to cook for him.  And I hadn’t even gotten his syrup made yet.  There was only one good egg left in the oldest box.  Three or four were rotten.  The eggs in the other box look a lot better, so found another good one right away.  Before starting the eggs, I got syrup made and let Daddy watch the syrup while I cooked his eggs.  Then I got my pancakes cooked.  Was glad I had cut up half a popo last night and cooked it so it would be ready to go on my pancakes this morning.

Enjoyed my breakfast and quiet time.  Then cleaned the chalkboard, covered the books, and locked the school cupboard.  Still had a good amount of time to work on other things before lotu.  Decided I should do some printing while the sun was there to recharge the battery.  Got Sunny’s math pages for this week set up and then printed them out.  Also printed blank maps of North and South America for the students to identify the three largest countries in social studies class this week.

After that, I tried again to send the e-mails to Christy and Connie that I had gotten ready yesterday evening.  They wouldn’t send last night, and e-mails wouldn’t come in either.  The e-mails did come in this morning, but Christy’s and Connie’s e-mails didn’t go out.  I worked on other lesson material until lotu time, including a new music lesson for this coming Friday.

Not long after 10:00, people started coming in for lotu.  About 10:20 Tomas started the singing.  Then Mike read a portion of Matthew chapter 23 before Matthew came and gave announcements and then preached on II Corinthians 1:1-11.  It was his first time to do that kind of preaching, but one could tell that he studied well.  He did a good job, and it was a good passage for him to preach on as he, and others, have faced a lot of opposition in the public preaching ministry.  There were three that responded to the invitation.

After the meeting, I took some pictures of the five men who are doing the preaching now so I can put a picture in the newsletter.  Then we had our lunch (the rest of the pumpkin soup), and then I had a nap.

Mike led the singing the second meeting, and Amos translated for David.  David’s message was short today - it was mainly introductory remarks showing the purpose of the material he will be covering.  The next section was too long for him to start on.

After the second meeting, Daddy had a nap.  I scanned music for the new song the school students will be learning - “The Redeemer Has Come.”  The tune is “The Comforter Has Come.”

Printed out a copy of the new music lesson and made corrections.  Then I got the student copy made and will print their copies out later this week.

Cut up the other half of the popo for snack.  I wasn’t really hungry for snack so had my popo with my supper.

Then I tried sending e-mails again, and this time, third try, they finally went out.  When the computer was fully charged, we shut it down, and I got the schoolroom and lesson materials ready for classes tomorrow.

Then it was time to get supper - warmed over chicken and biscuits and broccoli.

“For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.”  Romans 12:3

August 19.  No rain last night.  The skies were clear in the evening, and the stars were shining.  In the middle of the night, the moon could be seen.  Clouds were building up, however, and by morning, there were quite a few clouds.  There was no fog, however, and it turned out to be another nice day like yesterday.  Very warm and humid this afternoon though.

I was thankful to get the newsletter finished yesterday evening and sent off to Christy and Connie.  And we also heard from Dave Crowe about the youth camp, an answer to the young people’s prayers.  So we will give them a week+ off school the end of September so those who want to can go to youth camp.  We would like to send a couple of the church men with them.

We didn’t get as much covered in Phonics class today as I had hoped, but it had been a long time since they had done anything with rhyming words.  So we spent some time discussing that part of the reading workbook lesson quite thoroughly.  We also spent a good amount of time in math class going over the months of the year and spelling the names of the month.  We have spent a couple weeks on that, but it still hasn’t all sunk in.  And their spelling lesson today was a bit harder than the others have been, with words showing comparison -- adding suffixes -er and -est.

We still finished school a little bit after twelve.  Had tomato sandwiches for lunch.  I slept quite a while at nap time.    Then I went outside for a little while to get some fresh air and sunshine.  After that, I finished grading today’s papers and recording grades.  By then it was time to fix supper - spaghetti tonight.  Also washed, cut up, and cooked a few carrots.  We were thankful that Sawe came along when Daddy was out cutting up some kindling for the wood stove.  He was happy to go on an errand for us and take a note down to Janeth to send us up a chunk of hamburger mince from the haus sik freezer.

Daddy changed the faucet on the bathroom sink this afternoon, as it started leaking pretty badly yesterday.

I was just about ready to start dishes this evening when a young girl came with bananas and then Bonita’s grandmother came with a HUGE popo.  Finally got the dishes done, and now am glad for a little relax time.  As soon as I cool down a bit more, I will get a bath.

August 16.  Another cold morning — somewhere around 53º again.  But another lovely day too, and very warm this afternoon.

Daddy called this morning before I had breakfast and said they were going to be the first flight, coming on the twin otter.  Then the twin otter would go to Simogu and get coffee.  The weather was fine here for that — no fog.  More clouds than usual, but they were well above the ridges, and there was plenty of blue sky in between.

Then Daddy called a little later and said he only had about 300 kilos of cargo.  That wasn’t enough for the twin otter so the twin otter would arrange a different schedule and Daddy would wait for the 206.  That would make his flight take place somewhere around noon.

The students had another test in Bible class today — a music test.  Most of them did quite well.  Then we started going over the drama.  Didn’t have time to look through all of it, but I told them what part each of them would be playing and some of the things we would need to make and prepare for props, clothing, etc.

After school, I had my lunch — some of the pumpkin soup I made yesterday.  While I was grading papers, I heard the plane coming.  Finished grading before people started coming with cargo.  I had Sosthenes help give out the chocolate wafers, and Steve helped bring the boxes into the kitchen.

After everyone left and Daddy came in, I went for a nap.  After a few minutes, Daddy came for a nap too.  Only slept about a half hour.  Then got up and helped put things away.  Ate part of the ice cream that Daddy brought home — mmm, good!  Mint chocolate chip.  Daddy ate the rest of it.

Worked on putting things away for a while, and then rested and worked on lesson plans for next week.  Made a popo cobbler for supper.  It tasted really good.

Bonita came this afternoon and cleaned all the weeds away from under the house and in the ditch under the eaves.  She also cleaned all the bamboo skins out of the ditch behind the house.  Then we had her take a bag of bread, meat, and butter down to Janeth to be put in the freezer.

Not very many dishes to do this evening since Daddy was only here for one meal today, and we didn’t use many dishes for just popo cobbler.  We were still rather full from the ice cream too so didn’t eat much of the cobbler.

Daddy got the new solar battery hooked up to the regulator and inverter.  We are thankful to have a new solar battery.  They charged it all the way up for us at CRMF before he brought it home.

“32For God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.  33O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!  34For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?  35Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again?  36For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”  Romans 11:32-36

August 17.  We both were quite tired last night and went to bed early.  This morning was warmer than the past few mornings have been, and the weather was cloudy almost all day.

Mike was in charge of lotu this morning and continued his series on love, speaking from I John 4:16-21.  It was good to see Tomas out today and feeling much better.

Sunny and Bonita washed clothes again after lotu.  They got done earlier today, but they were able to start earlier too.  Daddy helped me hang them out and wring more water out of them.  It is hard to wring them out good by hand.  There was no sun and little wind today to dry the clothes so we were thankful that there wasn’t any rain until later in the afternoon.  We brought a few clothes in after lunch.  Then when I got up from nap, I saw some black clouds overhead so went out and got in other clothes that had dried.  About 3:15, Daddy went out to see if the rest were dry, and it started raining.  So I went out and helped him get the rest in.  There were just a few socks to hang in the house.

While the girls were washing clothes this morning, I did some scanning and photo copying of some school papers for next week.  Then sorted through some more school stuff in Connie’s room, and did a little more of that this afternoon too.  Just have a little over a week left to get that room organized before our company comes.

At noon, I put the chicken on to cook for dinner, but it was already late so we warmed up the soup and had that for the noon meal while the chicken was cooking.  Then we had the chicken for supper, along with bread (for Daddy) or biscuits (for me), and broccoli.

While I was warming up the soup for lunch, Tomas was here talking to Daddy.  He decided to buy our old solar battery for K100.  (We had paid over K1000 for it.)  He has an old solar panel.  It doesn’t work really well, but works some.  And he has some lights that he can hook up to the battery.  He is very clever at working out wiring and ways to work out electrical needs.  He is not real smart at book work, but the Lord has given him a lot of abilities in mechanical ways.  He is very ingenious at figuring out ways to do lots of technical things.

Also finished school lesson plans this afternoon for this coming week, worked on the kidznewzletter and finally got that ready this evening to send off to the girls, fixed up the broccoli to be cooked for supper, and made myself some biscuits.

It took a while after supper to get the kitchen cleaned up and do the dishes.  Then I cut up half a popo to make syrup for my pancakes in the morning.

“1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.  2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”  Romans 12:1,2

Sunshiny School Days and a Beautiful Orange Pumpkin

August 14.  Woke up to a cold morning, around 53º.  Got the fire going, and then got dressed and took care of my morning needs, including breakfast.  Did some exercises and had quiet time.  Then I heard voices in the meeting room.

Amos started lotu around 7:20.  We sang a few songs, and then he started teaching from the book of Acts.  He seemed nervous at first, but after a while he relaxed and did okay.

Tomas was still not here.  Rebeka said he has malaria now and is quite weak.  Sleeps a good part of the time.

We started school somewhere between 8:30 and 8:45.  Finished phonics class early and math class about the usual time.  There were several new things to learn in math class today.  It seems like they give them a bunch of new things all at once — deciding what coins to use to make a certain amount of toea, borrowing twice in a subtraction problem, the nine multiplication table.  During the last class they cut out the map pieces they had colored last week and glued them in the right places on their map pages in their social studies books.  It took quite a while to get those all cut out so it was still 12:30 before we finished school today.  It was really quiet in there while everybody was cutting and gluing so I put a music tape on for everyone to listen to.  I finished grading today’s work while they were cutting and then helped Bonita with her cutting since she was the farthest behind.

After school, Steve, Esau, and Dallas cut firewood.  It turned out to be very warm this afternoon.  After my nap, I washed my hair, and then did some printing — Bible test papers for tomorrow, the next John lesson, and copies of the drama to start going over with the students.  After that, I put the John lessons in their folders and started getting things ready for tomorrow’s classes.  Had to fix a mistake on the verse visual (had left a word out) and cut little cards for the students to make flash cards tomorrow for the nine multiply facts.

After my supper, I finished getting things ready for tomorrow.  I discovered I didn’t have a copy of the teacher’s lesson for the next lesson in John so took time to print that out, plus a couple lessons ahead.  Then made corrections in the computer on future lessons so they will be ready for making the students’ copies next time.

“14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?  15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”  Romans 10:14,15

August 15.  The Lord gave us another lovely day.  Very cold again this morning, but the sun was up early, and there was sunshine and blue sky most of the day.  We did get some sprinkles of rain a couple times this afternoon.

Daddy called around 6:45.  It was good to hear his voice.  There are no good generators in town so he is going to see if we can get our old one back here soon and try putting a new voltage regulator in for now.

I wondered if I was going to get to eat breakfast this morning as there were various interruptions.  Just when I was about to fix my cereal, Elisapet’s mother came to see if I wanted any popo.  I told her I would look at them so she went to get them.  One was definitely too green, but the other was okay.  Then she asked if I wanted a pumpkin.  Yes, indeed!  I would be delighted to have a pumpkin.  So she went to get that.  It was a really nice pumpkin too.  I had been praying for a nice vegetable — we have had lots and lots of greens lately.  Greens are nice, but it is nice to have something different too.  I took bites of breakfast in between her coming and going.  Since the door was open for Elisapet’s mother, some of the school kids came early — before 7:30.  I guess they didn’t realize what time it was with the weather so nice.  They got their school books out, but then saw that the clock only said 7:30 + or -, so they went back outside until later.  By the time I finally finished my breakfast, I just had a few minutes left to do a couple other little things.  The fire needed to be tended to as well.  I was thankful that I had done my exercises and prayer time earlier this morning.  Was able to read my Bible while I was eating.

Everyone but Dallas said their Bible verse already this morning.  I didn’t think they would be ready yet since this was only the second day so they surprised me.  Then we reviewed our lessons in Daniel and had a test.  The test was a little harder than usual so I graded on a scale.  Phinehas and Sosthenes each missed two — that was the top grade — so I graded all the others accordingly.

I got most of the grading done during school.  Just had to finish the math worksheets and grade their English exercises.  Did that right after my lunch, before nap.  I was pretty tired at nap time today so slept a little beyond what I expected.  It was after 3:00 when I got up.  Wanted to get out in the sunshine while I could so did that first.  When I came back in, I put water on to heat for dishes; and while it was heating, I got the everything ready for starting the fire in the morning.  Started getting things ready for school tomorrow too.

When the water was hot, I did the dishes.  By then, it was time to start supper.  That pumpkin certainly looked like it would be a nice one for soup.  I wonder if I can cut it.  Yes, soup sounded like a good thing for supper.  First I put some rice on to cook since that would take a little longer to get done than the pumpkin.  While the rice was cooking, I worked on the pumpkin.  It took some effort, but I did manage to get it all cut up and peeled.  It was a beautiful orange pumpkin.  I cut the whole thing up, peeled it, removed the core, cut it into little pieces and added it to the pot.  Now I would have pumpkin and rice soup.  I was so thankful for the pumpkin.  Yesterday I finished up the greens I had been eating since the beginning of the week, and I thought I was going to have to eat canned beans today.  The Lord was so gracious to send me that pumpkin.  And the soup tasted so good.

After eating a couple bowls full of soup, I finished getting things ready for school tomorrow.  Then I put water on for bath and sorted through some coloring books while the bath water was heating.  Took my bath and had my crypto drink.  Now it is nearly 8:30 and time for a snack.

August 13.  Woke up a little before 6:00 this morning.  Got the fire started and got dressed.  When I looked out the bedroom window, I saw pink clouds and blue sky in the south.  Then I looked toward the east and saw a sunrise.  Hooray!  Oh, thank you, Lord for the sunrise.  We have not seen a pretty sunrise or sunset for I don’t know how long.  I grabbed up the camera and went out and took a picture.

Not long after that, Daddy called.  It was good to hear his voice.  I’m so thankful to have my own mobile now.  He said the generator he was thinking of getting at Papindo was gone.  There wasn’t another one.  So he is checking around other places.  Said there was a heavy rain yesterday afternoon in Goroka.

After we said good-bye, I had my morning drink.  Then did some exercises before fixing my breakfast.  After breakfast and quiet time, I got the bed made and then sorted out some more of the papers on my desk so I can try to get my desk top cleaned off.  At 8:00, the first student, Sosthenes, came in for school.  Most of the others followed right after him.  We prayed, sang, reviewed John 1:1-3 and then started learning Romans 10:9.  The rest of the class time we continued our study in Daniel, finishing chapter 1 today.  Ready for a test on Thursday on Daniel 1.

We finished classes about 12:00 today which was nice.  Had leftover greens and soup for dinner.  Finished grading the math worksheets and the spelling workbooks.  Recorded grades and then had nap.

After nap, I went out in the sunshine for a while.  When I came inside, I cut up a piece of popo and enjoyed that with some banana and almonds.  Got things ready for the fire in the morning, and everything ready for classes tomorrow.  Made some bread for my supper.  Got a test ready on Daniel chapter 1.

Enjoyed a poached egg and some tomato on part of my bread.  The first egg I cracked open was very unusual.  There was another shell inside the egg, softer than the outer shell.  The egg yolk was in the inner shell, and the egg white was between the two shells.  There wasn’t much white or yolk since it was a small egg, and the extra shell took up a fair bit of space.

I didn’t do dishes this evening, but washed out the small pans in case I need to use them tomorrow.  Finished writing a song that I started last night — one to the tune of “The Comforter Has Come.”  The new song has to do with spreading the good news that a Redeemer and Savior has come.

“9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.  11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.  12For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.  13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Romans 10:9-13

Heading to Town for Supplies

August 12.  There was lots of fog this morning, but it rose quickly, and we enjoyed some nice sunshine for the first couple morning hours.  After that the clouds came.  It tried off and on several times to rain.

Daddy’s flight was scheduled for late this afternoon, but we prayed that it would be earlier so he would be able to start the shopping today.  He has a lot to do while he is in town.

Warmed up pancakes for breakfast.  Had quiet time, walked, and did exercises.  Helped Daddy finish packing and make sure he had everything he needed.  Swept the schoolroom and started setting up for school tomorrow.  Then I sat down for a while and did some printing — memory verse reminders, math lessons for Sunny, math worksheets, and music test.  After that, I repacked boxes of school books, putting the books into small boxes that I can handle and putting books for next year’s classes in a separate place.

Then it was time to sit down again, so I worked on a memory verse visual.  Our verses to learn in the next few weeks are Romans 10:9-13 so it took a while to write all that out in Owena on the posterboard.

Daddy finally heard from MAF that they planned to be here around 12:30.  So I warmed up the soup and greens for an early lunch.  While lunch was warming, and after lunch, I started going over the letters of the verse visual with markers.  Around 1:00, we heard the roar of the plane engine, coming over the mountain from Wiabo.  A quick couple of kisses, and Daddy was off for the airstrip.  Wiru and Stanley came along and took his cargo up to the plane.

After the plane took off, I went for my nap.  Heard it start raining shortly after I lay down.  When I woke up from nap, however, the sun was shining.  I went outside for a stretch in the fresh air and sunshine, but the sunshine didn’t stay around long.

Cut up a piece of popo, a banana, and some almonds for my snack.  Finished repacking the books that were in the office, and then moved the desk down next to the bookshelf to try to make a little sitting room area for when our company comes.  Erased all the pencil lines on the verse visual and put the visual on the easel in the schoolroom.  Got everything else ready for school tomorrow.  Had supper, looked for some pictures of Chinese people (for social studies class; didn’t find anything), and then did dishes.

Sakias and two of his children came a few minutes ago with a popo and three tomatoes.  How thankful I am for the tomatoes!  I keep praying for more fresh veggies and fruit.

“As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”  Romans 9:33

Thankful for Much Needed Rest

August 10.  I was thankful for a very good rest last night.  I did not even hear the rat.  After several doses of rat poison, it was still going.  Hopefully last night’s dose will do it in.  And I forgot to put my plastic bag caddy in the cupboard so he carried away another of my bread bags, this time under the bathroom sink.

First thing I did this morning, after getting dressed and having my morning supplements, was to make granola.

Tomas was supposed to have charge of lotu this morning, but he apparently overdid himself on his hike back home and hasn’t gotten much strength back yet.  Matthew was prepared and continued teaching on the free gift of salvation this morning, expounding on a couple verses in Romans and a couple in Revelation.

Afterward the two young ladies did the laundry again, and the rest of the church family went to finish raking the airstrip.  Even Memedyi and Yanahdo did a little raking.  While Sunny and Bonita were washing clothes, I got new Bible verse reminders ready to print out and worked on lesson plans for school for this coming week.

When the laundry was done, Daddy and I went out and hung the clothes and the two girls sorted, washed and cut up greens; shelled peanuts; and swept the floor.

Daniel was here this morning too, fixing the leak around the wood stove chimney and getting down spider webs above the veranda and the east windows.  There were lots of cocoon-type things that he took down, and he showed Daddy all the baby spiders inside each one - hundreds of them.

After the girls left, I cut some onions up into the greens and put them on to cook.  Worked more on lesson plans while they were cooking, and then warmed up the leftover rice.  After lunch, we brought just a handful of clothes in - that’s all that were dry.

Had another sound-asleep nap again today.  Daddy was out getting more clothes when I woke up.  There were just a few things left on the lines.  I finished up the lesson plans and then got the meeting room ready for tomorrow - covered the books, locked the cupboard, and cleaned the chalkboard.  So I won’t have that to do in the morning.  (I will need to cook a meal tomorrow.)  Just before supper, I cleaned the bathroom.

After supper, Daddy helped me again to try to figure out how to call him on my phone.  This time, I wrote everything down step by step.  My phone is a lot more complicated than his, and certainly more complicated than the computer.  Then he helped me know how to check my balance and add more money to the phone.  And also answer the phone when he calls me.  So I think I’ll be able to handle that much now while he is in town.

After that I did the dishes.

“31What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?  32He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?  33Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.  34Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.”  Romans 8:31-34

August 11.  Daddy’s birthday!  I made him a card in the computer and put it on the desktop.

The Lord gave us a dry, sunny day today.

After our Sunday morning pancakes, quiet time, and exercise time, I scanned some math pages and papers that I’ll be needing for school this coming week.  Afterward I got them all set up for printing.  Will have to try to do the printing tomorrow.

Daddy finished the preaching on I Corinthians this morning, and David preached this afternoon, starting with lesson one of the series that Daddy has been teaching in soul-winning class.  Next Sunday, Matthew will start preaching on II Corinthians.

This afternoon, I finished making a music test for the students to take this week and also helped Daddy with some packing.  Then I made potato onion soup for supper.  I had planned to put soup mix in it, but couldn’t find any more soup mix anywhere.  I thought I still had another bag of soup mix.  Otherwise we could have gotten some in town last time.  So I added extra onion, some fresh grated ginger root, rice pasta, and canned peas and carrots.  That’s about the only way the canned veggies taste good, and it did add a little color to the soup.

“35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?  36As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.  37Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.  38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:35-39  Amen!

Three Birthdays!

8/13/2013

August 8.  Almost 7:30 p.m.  Just got done in the kitchen.

The Lord sent us rain today, most of the day.  I thought all my students would be late for class, but they surprised me.   After reviewing Bible verses, we started on lesson 2 of Daniel, starting on the story of Daniel and his three friends’ refusal of the king’s meat and wine and how the Lord gave Daniel wisdom to handle the matter in a good way.  There were lots of good lessons in today’s lesson for these young people.

Right after phonics class, the students let me know that the community school kids were up here starting to cut grass on the airstrip.  So we closed school for the day, and our students went out to help.  It was raining, but they still kept working.  We praise the Lord for their willingness to come and help with that job.

We were afraid the students were all going to leave when it started raining hard, but the hard rain didn’t last long.  In only a little over an hour, the whole airstrip had been cut.  Daddy called MAF and let them know it was all cut; but, they asked, “Has it been raked?”  No.  And nobody wanted to rake.  So it still can’t be opened until the raking is done.  Daddy started out to rake a couple times, but he got hardly anything done before the rain sent him home.

It was nice to have those couple free hours this morning.  I didn’t have any papers to grade so that was a blessing.  I put a pot of rice and soup mix on the wood stove to cook for dinner.  Then spent most of the rest of the morning reorganizing and cleaning things out of Connie’s room.  Need to get that all straightened up before our company comes the end of this month.

We enjoyed an early nap, and I was very thankful for a nice sound sleep for about an hour and a half.  It took me a long time to wake up good afterward though.  I wandered around slowly, reorganizing and cleaning a few more things in Connie’s room.  When I finally woke up good, about 45 minutes later, I washed my hair.  Had a snack. Got gift bags ready for Graham (whose birthday is today) and Bethuel (whose birthday will be tomorrow.)  We’ll celebrate both together tomorrow.  Got a birthday card made for Connie, and then got supper on the table.

When supper was over and the dishes were done, I made some cupcakes for the party tomorrow and got other goodies ready to go with them.  Will frost the cupcakes and make drink in the morning.

“24For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?  25But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.”  Romans 8:24,25

August 9.

Connie’s birthday.  39 years old!

It is 6:30 p.m. and quiet right now.  It was nice to get done in the kitchen a little earlier this evening.  I do need to make granola, however.

The weather today was much like yesterday, but not quite as much rain.

The first order of business this morning was to frost the cupcakes for the party and make the drink.  There were three extra cupcakes, since the recipe made a dozen, so those were for Lew’s birthday.  By the time that was done, and I had breakfast and quiet time, it was almost time for school.

We were grateful to the little children for doing a lot of raking this morning.  They worked hard most of the morning and moved lots of piles of grass off the airstrip.  Nobody has rakes.  They just use poles.  We don’t know if anyone has a rake besides us, and our rake is just about done for.  Daddy went over several times and did some raking; and after school, the GCS students went over and raked.  We thank the Lord for all those who pitched in and worked.

After reviewing verses in Bible class today, we did a music lesson.  Today they learned about the half note, then played a couple pieces with half and quarter notes and played a short song with the five notes they have learned so far.  Most of them did pretty well.

Instead of doing English today, as we usually do on Friday, I had them start coloring the map pieces for social studies after they had their spelling quiz.  When they finished the coloring, they put everything away and got the room straightened up.  Then Graham and Bethuel got the table ready and put the refreshments on for their birthday party.  They are both 18 now.

While they were eating, Daddy and I had our dinner.  Then I gave Graham and Bethuel their gift bags and took their pictures.

Daddy went to nap right after lunch so he could go out and rake after a short nap.  Jaydean must have come while I was sleeping as Daddy saw her out there weeding the flower garden when he came back from raking.  I did hear someone knock around 2:15, but did not get up until about a half hour later.

I was going to do printing first thing this afternoon so the solar battery would have a little time to recharge in the liquid sunshine.  But the computer battery was low so had to charge that up first.  While it was charging, I got journal notes ready to send the girls.  After it got up to the 80’s, I switched plugs and printed the 9 multiply chart and flash cards.  They’ll be learning the nine table next week.

After shutting things down, I cut and trimmed the flash cards, trimmed the parts of the multiply chart and glued them together, colored the frog, and then recorded today’s grades.

A little before supper time, Daddy reminded me that I was out of biscuits.  So I threw together some egg and onion biscuits for my supper.  After supper, while the dishwater was heating, I sorted out the clothes for the girls to wash tomorrow.  There were a few extra dishes this evening with cups and things from the party.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”  Romans 8:28   An encouraging verse to end the day!
