Midnight Harmonies

Just wanted to share this encouraging excerpt from "Morning and Evening" by Charles Haddon Spurgeon.  It is our prayer that the life and testimony of Dad and Mom will be an encouragement to others and will spur them on to live faithfully for Him, even during the dark times.

"'Who passing through the valley of Baca make it a well; the rain also filleth the pools.' (Psalm 84:6)   This teaches us that comfort obtained by a one may often prove serviceable to another; just as wells would be used by the company who came after.  We read some books full of consolation, which is like Jonathan's rod, dropping with honey.  Ah! we think our brother has been here before us, and digged this well for us as well as for himself.  Many a  'Night of Weeping,' 'Midnight Harmonies,' and 'Eternal Day,' a 'Crook in the Lot,' a 'Comfort for Mourners' has been a well digged by a pilgrim for himself, but has proved quite as useful to others.  Specially we notice this in the Psalms, such as at the beginning. 'Why art thou cast down, O my soul?'  Travellers have been delighted to see the footprint of man on a barren shore, and we love to see the waymarks of pilgrims while passing through the vale of tears.  The pilgrims dig the well, but strange enough, it fills from the top instead of the bottom.  We use the means, but the blessing does not spring from the means.  We dig a well, but heaven fills it with rain.    The horse is prepared for the day of battle, but safety is of the Lord.  The means are connected with the end, but they do not of themselves produce it.  See here the rain fills the pools, so that the wells become useful as reservoirs for the water; labour is not lost, but yet it does not supersede divine help.  Grace may well be compared to rain for its purity, for its refreshing and vivifying influence, for its coming alone from above, and for the sovereignty with which it is given or withheld.  May our readers have showers of blessing, and may the wells they have digged be filled with water!  Oh, what are means and ordinances without the smile of heaven!  They are as clouds without rain, and pools without water.  O God of love, open the windows of heaven and pour us out a blessing!" --Morning and Evening

Thank God for His clouds full of rain and pools full of water.  How encouraging it is to know that the work is the Lord's, that He is the one who provides the means, gives strength to labor, gives grace for the work, and sends blessings from above.  We thank God that, though it is our duty to use the means, it is God that produces the end.  And that end is an expected end.  "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."  (Jeremiah 29:11)  God knows the end from the beginning.  Nothing is a surprise to God.

Please Pray for Lewis and Judy Tonight

Greetings on this beautiful September night.

"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair." (II Corinthians 4:7,8)

Thank you to those who have prayed for Dad and Mom.  Thank you for your prayers for them during the difficult time when the people were meeting a couple of weeks ago.  Things went much better than had been hoped.  We thank the Lord.  We heard from Dad and Mom tonight, and Dad was getting ready to preach the Sunday morning service.

However, new difficulties have arisen.  Dad and Mom face the problems in the church and now in their other ministries in Owena as well.  When they called tonight they were very discouraged.  Mom was having such a hard time that she could barely speak to us.  Please pray for them to have wisdom from the Lord.  They really need to know what to do.

Also, in addition to the problems on the spiritual and emotional side of things, the problems in physical areas continue as well.  There is still hardly any rain, though some has fallen on the mountain ridges.  The gardens there are doing OK, but the gardens in the lower areas are still dried up.  Also, Dad and Mom are having trouble with their computers, even their new one.  Also, the generator quit working, so the only power they have is solar power.  This means they are very limited in how much they can use the computer, and they are not able to print any material.  They do not know if they will be able to charge their mobile (cell) phone so we do not know if we will hear from them again in 2 weeks or not.  They do fly out to town on September 30.  We should hear from them then by email.

They are doing OK with their health though Dad has a cold and Mom's knees have been bothering her.  Otherwise they did not mention any particular health needs.  We thank the Lord for this as well.

Thank you for your prayers for them.  Please pray that God will encourage and strengthen them.  God is good, and God is faithful.

Update on Stateside Portion of the Work for the Owena People

9/6/2010

Hello to everyone!  Here is just a little update on what is going on stateside with the ministry to which God has called the Youngs.  Dad and Mom are still serving faithfully in Owena, Papua New Guinea.  There have been many difficulties, but God has answered some prayers, and there are also many blessings.  Many people have prayed, and it seems that the Lord is beginning to move in the hearts of the people in the church.  Please pray for a great work of the Holy Spirit and for the establishment of a strong church in Owena for Christ’s name’s sake.

Christy - Christy continues her ministry of preparing newsletters, and printing and sending correspondence for Dad and Mom.  She also prepares the display board for missions conference (coming up the end of this month) and gets new prayer cards printed when they run low, and so forth.  Another thing she enjoys is searching out and buying or ordering the things Dad and Mom need and also packing and sending these things.  She is excited to have this part in their ministry.

Connie - An opportunity came up for me to go to Papua New Guinea to visit Dad and Mom.  I was to leave on September 8th.  However, because of ongoing health problems this was not possible.  Recently I put an update in a note on the side bar saying that the doctor wanted to do blood tests for rheumatoid arthritis.  Also, I had food allergy tests done.  The rheumatoid arthritis tests came back normal.  The food allergy testing was not too bad.  Did find out I was allergic to green beans, pineapple, almonds, sunflower seeds, and beans (specifically kidney beans).  The doctor still wants to refer me to a rheumatologist, though there has not yet been a call back on an appointment.

Since I will not be able to go to Papua New Guinea this year, I will no longer be getting a portion of support.  However, at this time I will be working up to 20 hours a week on projects for Dad and Mom.  This is quite exciting.  If I could not go to PNG, I wanted to be involved as much as possible in a ministry here.  God has answered that prayer and granted that desire.

Several projects are in the works.  A series of photobooks on the Fruit of the Spirit has been completed, and God has provided for the printing of all but 2 or 3 of these books.  (I think there were 21 in the series in all).  Other reading materials are in progress as well.

One of the plans was for me to go to Owena and teach science to the children in Papua New Guinea.  A science curriculum has already been prepared.  However, since I will not be going to Papua New Guinea, this curriculum is being revised to become reading material for the young people there.

Mom has translated almost 100 songs into Melanesian Pidgin English.  Musical scores for the public domain hymns are readily available online, and these songs are being prepared to go in a hymnal for the people there.  Most of these musical scores come from ccel.org/cceh/ or from the Cyberhymnal, now known as hymntime.org.  (Sorry, I wasn't able to paste the links)
There are a couple of songbooks in Pidgin, but none of these contain the music for the songs as far as we know.  Mom would like to request permission to use a few songs that are not in the public domain.  Please pray as we will be seeking to secure this permission in the near future.

Below are some pictures of the works in progress.  Thank you for your prayers.  Please continue to pray for wisdom and for the Lord’s help in accomplishing all that needs to be done.

“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom… Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.”  Psalm 90:12,16,17
