A Sunny Warm Saturday

September 14.  The Lord gave us a sunny and warm day today.  There were still strong winds so I made sure I put my hat on when I went out after dinner to help bring in the clothes.  But the winds, as well as the sun, are nice for drying clothes so we were thankful for them both.

Mike was in charge of lotu this morning.  He had finished his series on God’s love and started today on the love that God has given within the hearts of his children.

After lotu, Daddy had David start the generator for him so we could wash clothes.  His back is still hurting quite badly so it looks like it is probably not a kidney problem or the antibiotic should have started helping by now.  There was nobody around to help refill the machine for the rinse, however, so he had to lift the buckets himself.  He said it wasn’t much of a problem though as long as he lifted properly.  He took ibuprofen later and was feeling a bit better this afternoon.  So he must have put his back out somehow.

The weather was nice when we hung the clothes out, and it was good to get out for a change.  The winds didn’t come up until later.

After hanging out clothes, I got lesson plans done for this coming week.  Wasn’t sure how many days to plan for so just made four days of plans.  The youth aren’t sure yet what day they will be leaving for youth camp, and Monday is a national holiday so there is no school that day.  So it won’t be more than four, but could be less.

Used the leftover spaghetti sauce and made a small pizza for our dinner.  There was only enough cheese for half of the pizza so I put that on Daddy’s half.

Daddy started getting the clothes down while I cleaned up the kitchen.  Then I helped finish getting in the clothes.  We got the shirts and things hung up and then got ready for nap.

After nap, Neomi’s mother was here.  I guess she had been here for a while, waiting for us to get up from nap.  She was sitting in the corner of the porch where she usually sits and waits when we are sleeping.  She brought a couple hands of bananas and wanted some Maggi (noodles) and matches.  Then she wanted me to read to her from the gospel of John.

After she left, I had a snack and then cleaned the bathroom.  Worked on some lessons in the computer and got the pictures put in that I took yesterday; then swept the office and kitchen floors before getting supper on.

“10According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.  11For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”  I Corinthians 3:10,11

September 12.  Went to bed early last night, tired and cold.  Could not seem to get warm so finally, in the middle of the night, I put my bathrobe on too.  Also cut up part of an onion and put next to the bed in hopes that I would sleep better and not be coughing.  I was thankful that helped.

A little sunshine early this morning and late this afternoon, but very little.  Very cool again most of the day with lots of clouds, and damp air.  Not too good for colds.  A LOT of people are sick with colds, and the weather stays so cool that it is hard to get feeling better.  The days are either cool, cloudy, damp, and sometimes rainy; or cool and sunny with strong cold winds.

This was the third day of teaching on remainders in division.  The first thing I did was a visual demonstration.  Brought a bag of 30 peanuts for them to divide among 9 students.  How many would each one get, and how many would be left over?  That seemed to help most of them understand what was going on.  Bonita still seemed completely lost so I sat by her and helped her through the first couple rows in her lesson.  Then I sat while she did a row and told me what she was doing.  That seemed to help, and she did the rest by herself and did fine.

We did a lot of review in Social Studies class, and then they started coloring and labeling maps, following instructions in their workbooks.

After school, Esau and Dallas stayed to do a small job.  I had them get down the PNG flag for me (it hangs way up high) so we can use it tomorrow in our Independence Day study.  Then I had them blow up nine balloons the colors of the flag, or so we thought.  Like last time, the “black” balloons turned out to be purple.  One of the “black” ones and one of the yellow ones burst.  I didn’t have any more of the same kind - long curly balloons - so got out a white and a red regular balloon shaped balloon.

I was thankful to climb under the covers for a nap after dinner and get warm for a while.  Afterward I finished grading and recording grades (not too much to grade today), put a pot of rice and soup mix on to cook for supper, and practiced keyboard.

Now Daddy is waiting for the Bible school students and youth to come for Bible school.  He is going to try tonight to teach, if he doesn’t cough too much.  Maybe he will have the students read parts of the lesson so he won’t have to use his voice as much.

“For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.”  I Corinthians 2:16

September 13.  It wasn’t quite as cold last night so we were thankful for that.  The Lord gave us an hour or so of sunshine this morning, and we thought it was going to be a sunny day.  But the weather soon changed to cloudy again.  Daddy did let the fire go out early afternoon, but started it again late afternoon because the temperature had dropped and the winds were cold.

Everyone seemed to enjoy school today.  Our first class was music class.  I had them practice writing treble clefs and bass clefs.  Then I gave them each parts of a music piece to write on the staff lines on the chalkboard.  After that, they did some ear training exercises, played the scale, and each played one of the two song pieces they had been practicing.  They all did good so next time I’ll give them a new little song to learn.

The rest of the morning was spent doing things related to Independence Day, which will be Monday.  There was a lesson discussing the meaning of independence (it was in English this year - last year we had the lesson in Pdigin), the national flag, national pledge, national anthem, and national emblem.  There were blanks on the lesson for them to fill in.  I wanted to see how much they remembered about what their flag looked like, so I had the flag taken down until after we finished that part of the lesson.  After discussing the meaning of the pledge, they all stood, and Esau led them in the pledge to their flag.  Sosthenes led the national anthem after we had discussed it.  Then they had recess, and after recess, we talked about the national emblem.

The last part of the lesson covered using the flag for presenting the Gospel.  It is absolutely amazing how every part of the PNG flag can be used to present the Gospel.  The colors - black, red, white, and yellow (gold); the pictures - the Southern Cross and the bird of paradise; and the design - the division into two parts (black and red), representing two groups of people - those lost in darkness, and those washed in the blood of the Lamb.

After another break, everyone colored pictures of the flag and the national emblem.  The students were singing hymns and choruses while they were coloring.  It was a joy to listen to them.  I took pictures while they were working.  Then each of the students got to choose a balloon.  I had to draw names to see who would be first since they were all full of me, me, me.   Afterward I took a group picture of them with their balloons and coloring pages.  Then they tacked their coloring up on the bulletin board.  It was close to 1:00 before everyone went home and we had our dinner.

Matthew asked for the section on the Gospel to be translated into Pidgin so I did that this afternoon and printed out copies this evening for Daddy to give to the men in Bible school.

I didn’t have any grading to do this afternoon so that was a blessing.

After translating the section on the PNG flag and the Gospel this afternoon, I went to the kitchen to make lemon sugar cookies for Daddy.

“7So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.  8Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.”  I Corinthians 3:7,8

A Joy to Hear Them Sing

September 10.  It has been a rainy, foggy, cool day. The wood stove has consumed a lot of firewood.  Even with the wood stove going, the house has been very cool.

It is almost 9:15 now.  The young people are in the other room practicing their music.  It is a joy to hear them singing.  I was helping them practice, but have other things to do now.  Came in a few minutes ago and got a snack.  As soon as I eat my snack, I need a bath.

Throughout the day, I snatched bits of time to color the PNG emblem so the students can see how to color it on Friday when we talk about Independence Day.

Had quite a bit of grading to do this afternoon.  Then I had to make biscuits for my supper, and cut up a tomato, a cucumber and an avocado.  Also stopped now and then to help Bethuel who was here trying to remake his friendship bracelet that fell apart.

By the time we finished supper and I had done dishes, it was already 6:30.  I had to print out some paste-overs for the students’ math books, then trim them, and paste them in their books.  By that time it was a little after 7:00, and part of the group of young people were here for choir practice.  Tonight they practiced “Jesus I Gutpela” and we started on “Peman I Bin Kam.”

“12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.  13Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”  I Corinthians 2:12,13

September 11.  The stars shone brightly throughout the night, and the Lord gave us a sunshiny morning.  By late afternoon, however, it was all clouded over; and this evening, there was a little rain.  The weather certainly changes back and forth all the time.

Daddy got up a bit later than usual this morning.  He has not been feeling well today.  The cold has gone down into his chest so he started on amoxicillin.  He did not feel like teaching Bible school this evening so the young people are here to practice their songs.

Had leftover pancakes for breakfast, and then it was time for lotu.  Amos did much better at preaching today.  We are thankful that he has a teachable heart.

Classes started early, but it was still somewhat late when we finished today.  The English lesson was a bit hard for them.

After school, Bonita stayed and fixed greens, and I cooked them up this evening.  They will be for our meal tomorrow.  We finished up the leftover spaghetti and pumpkin for dinner today.  Both of us had long naps.  I just cannot get rid of this cold.  One day I think I am feeling a bit better, and the next day I feel worse again.

Then I had grading to do and recording, and lessons to get ready for tomorrow.

This evening, there was printing to do.

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”  I Corinthians 2:14

My Legs Pain, but My Mouth Doesn't Pain, so I Can Preach

September 8.  Cold this morning - only 50º.  We were thankful for sunshine and also thankful for the wood stove.

After making our pancake breakfasts and having quiet time, I worked on a school lesson for Independence Day which will be a week from today.  The lesson will be for this coming Friday, as there will be no school the following Monday.

People came early for lotu.  David and family were here about twenty minutes early.  David had gone to Aivonti yesterday morning to sell coffee and had run ahead of the others to get here in time for lotu.  He said he was ready to preach the second meeting.  “My legs pain, but my mouth doesn’t pain, so I can preach.”  The others who had gone didn’t even come to the meetings.  They just went home and went to bed.

Mike was sick today so Tomas took his place leading the singing.  Amos took Mike’s place in translating for David during the second meeting.

It was after 3:00 before we had our nap.  Afterward, I spent more time on the Independence Day lesson and finished it this evening.  Made a student copy with blanks for them to fill out.  Last year they had the lesson in Pidgin.  This year it will be in English.  It includes a section on using the PNG flag to present the Gospel.  Also printed out a copy of the next soul-winning lesson for Daddy to proofread, a couple of the “Tanim Bel” tracts, and a copy of the Independence Day Lesson for me to proofread.

Almost all the young people who are planning to go to camp were here for soul-winning class this evening.  We appreciate their attitude and desire to prepare their hearts before going to camp.  They want to be a good testimony while they are there.  There are 21 youth signed up for camp, and over half of them are saved.  Praise God!  We pray that others will be saved while at camp.  David and Matthew will accompany them.

“For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”  I Corinthians 2:2

September 9.  A very cool morning, but warmed up quite a bit this afternoon, in the house anyway.  Lots of wind outside.  Not much sun again today.  The plane came in twice - brought more medical supplies and Kelly and a couple others.  We were thankful that they brought us a couple dozen eggs.  We boiled up the last of our eggs this morning to make egg salad for sandwiches.

Most of the students said Romans 10:9-13 this morning.  I had forgotten that Sosthenes and Steve said them last Friday.  I gave them each one of the lollipops that the Venters had brought.  They couldn’t get over how big the lollies were.  I told them that South Africa has big animals and big lollipops.  :-)

After school, Phinehas and Bethuel and Steve cut firewood.

Wenera brought a big load of firewood this morning and Wiru brought a big load this afternoon.

After finishing grading and recording of grades this afternoon and getting things ready for school tomorrow, it was already going on 5:00.  I had to hurry and get supper.  Daddy cut up the rest of that nice pumpkin for me, and I peeled it and cut it into smaller pieces to cook for supper.  Made spaghetti this evening too and used up the rest of the meat in the sauce.

After doing dishes, I started practicing keyboard; but, after several interruptions, the keyboard went “crazy” so I shut it down.  Started water heating so I can get a bath before the evening gets too chilly.

“9But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.  10But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.”  I Corinthians 2:9,10

Bonita's Birthday!

September 6.  It took me a long time to get to sleep last night.  I couldn’t keep from coughing.  I tried the cough syrup, but that didn’t help this time.  Then I tried Vicks on the nose, but that didn’t help either.  Finally I took White Willow Bark and Echinacea and put Vicks on my neck.  After that, I was able to settle down.

When we woke up this morning, the whole world had disappeared in the fog.  The fog hung around for a long time.  It was another very cool day.  Just a couple hours of sunshine this afternoon before the clouds came back.

About 7:00 this morning, it dawned on me that today was Bonita’s birthday.  I had it marked in my lesson plans to get things ready yesterday; but since we didn’t have school yesterday, I hadn’t looked at the lesson plans.  Now what shall I do?  Wait until Monday to have her party?  No, that didn’t seem like the right thing to do.  So I quickly finished my breakfast, threw together ingredients for cupcakes and popped them into the oven, got out a party bag and some little gifts for Bonita, got together the party things - drinking cups, napkins, table cover, party tray, Rokroks, lolly pops, drink mix, nut cups, etc.  Then I realized I didn’t have enough peanuts roasted so dumped some peanuts into a baking pan and put those in the wood stove oven to roast.  Made up the fruit drink.  Got icing sugar into a bowl, ready to add the wet ingredients later.  Filled the peanut cups.  Then off to school.  I think that must be the fastest I’ve ever gotten things ready for a birthday party.  The cupcakes weren’t quite done by the time I left for school so I set the timer for five more minutes and asked Daddy to take them out for me when the timer went off.  Then while the students were reviewing their Bible verses, I came and took the cupcakes out of the pan.

At recess time, I frosted the cupcakes and put them on the party tray.  Stuck a lolly pop in the top of each one and put three Rokroks beside each.

We finished classes around 11:45.  I let them get things set out for the party, while I finished correcting their math books.  Then we sang “Happy Birthday,” Esau prayed, and they had their party.  I went and warmed up our dinner, and we ate too.  Then I gave Bonita her gift bag, took her picture, and they went home.

Shortly afterward, we had our nap.  I was tired and slept a bit extra today.  Afterward, I graded the English lessons and math worksheets and recorded today’s grades.  Then I tried to get some work done in the computer, but had lots of interruptions.  I did manage to finish writing the music lesson I had started earlier this week so was thankful to have gotten that much done.

It took a while to get dishes done this evening - there were quite a few storage containers, plus the baking dishes and all the cups from the party.  When dishes were done, I practiced keyboard before people came for Bible school.  Then I put water on to heat for bath so I could get washed before the evening got too chilly.

“27But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29That no flesh should glory in his presence.”  I Corinthians 1:27-29

September 7.  Praise the Lord for nice sunshine today for the laundry to dry.  It felt good to be out in the sunshine hanging the clothes.  It wasn’t long after that, though, before the cold winds came up.  I did not go out anymore the rest of the day as my throat is still sore.  Just can’t seem to get rid of the sore throat and earaches.

Some of the young people left for Aivonti while it was still night so they can sell more coffee and be back by tomorrow evening.

The sun comes up earlier now, so people come a bit earlier for lotu.  Tomas wasn’t feeling very well this morning.  He did do the teaching and did a good job, but he let Amos look after the singing and the prayer time.

Right after lotu, we started laundry.  While that was going, I got the holes punched in the students’ new Bible and music lessons that I had printed out last night, and then put the lessons in their folders.  After we hung the clothes out, I worked on the song book file for a while.

Peeled and cut up potatoes and onions to cook for soup, and later added the pumpkin that was already cooked.  Grated some ginger into it too.  We enjoyed the soup for our dinner, and it was “just what the doctor ordered” for our colds.  (There are lots of people sick with bad colds right now.  The weather, though often sunny, has not been very warm lately.)

After dinner, Daddy went out and got the clothes.  I cleaned up the kitchen, and put away the hang up clothes after he brought them in.  Then we had our nap.  Daddy got up in the middle of nap to go to the airstrip.  MAF was flying today to make up for a couple lost days this past week due to the weather.  They brought some medical supplies in today for the health center.

This afternoon, I worked on the next soul-winning lesson.  I had already written it a while ago, but needed to put a copy in the students’ file, put in blanks for them to fill in, and add a few pictures.  It took longer than I expected because I had a hard time finding pictures.  I had to look through some of the old CD’s to find what I was looking for.

Before fixing supper, I cleaned the chalkboard and covered the bookshelves; then set up the table in the guest room so I can start painting fire for the drama.

It took almost no time at all to do the dishes.  There were so few of them this evening.  So I was able to get to the computer not long after 6:00.

“30But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: 31That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”  I Corinthians 1:30,31

Catching Up on Computer Work and Cleaning

September 4.  The Lord gave us a nice sunny day again, but it was also quite cool again.

Amos wasn’t here for lotu this morning as he went yesterday with the youth to carry coffee.  So David looked after the singing and the prayer time, and Daddy did a little Bible study on the life of Christ in the book of Mark with examples we can follow in our Christian lives.  Even with so many gone, there were about a dozen here, counting us.

After lotu, we did a couple loads of laundry.  Then I will do laundry again on Saturday as I still have bedding and towels to do from when our visitors were here.  While clothes were washing, I cleaned the bathroom as I hadn’t had time to do that on Saturday.  The sun felt good when we were hanging out clothes, but it wasn’t long before the cool winds came up.

The rest of the morning was spent working on August progress report.  It was quite a bit longer than the past couple months and took a couple hours to complete.  Then it was time to get dinner.

After nap, I got things ready for school tomorrow.  Don’t know if the kids’ll be back or not.  People didn’t see any fires until this evening, so they probably won’t arrive back here before tomorrow.  So things are ready anyway for whenever they get here.

Put the finishing touches on the progress report. Then while Daddy was proofreading it, I got the used sheets and towels out of the guest bedroom and covered the bed with another sheet and blanket.  Started writing an e-mail before making myself some biscuits and getting supper.  It took a while to get dishes done this evening as there were lots of drinking vessels and storage containers.

After that I finished up the e-mail.  Then had my soda drink, a bath, and my snack before sending the e-mails and now writing in the journal.

Phinehas came this evening to practice music.  He did not go with the other young people to carry coffee because of his health.  It has been a long time since he and Dallas have practiced music or had keyboard class because of our not having the generator power.

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”  I Corinthians 1:18

September 5.  It has been a very cool day.  The temperature outside got up to about 72º for about an hour -- during the middle of the day and then started going back down again.  We have tried to keep warm by keeping the wood stove going, but even then I have had a light jacket or extra warm shirt on most of the day.

Since the students weren’t back yet from their trip to Okapa, I worked on some other projects today.  Folded yesterday’s laundry and got it put away.  That didn’t take long as Daddy had already folded most of the little things.  So I just had the bedding, towels, and a few other items to do.

Cleaned out the e-mail inbox.  Then I wrote an e-mail to Christy and Connie and along with that I sent them some photos.  It must have been a good day for sending and receiving e-mails, as I had 4 picture e-mails to go out, and there was almost 1.2 MB coming in, and everything was done in record time.

Put a little pillow in the heart-shaped pillow cover.  Took all the lambs off their shelf and dusted them, as well as the shelf, and the pictures hanging on the wall above the shelf.  Reorganized all the lambs back on the shelf and finished dusting other things in the bedroom.  Swept away the spider webs that had been built under the lamb shelf.  There must have been a hundred tiny black eggs in them so I was glad to get rid of those.

Then Daddy cut up part of the big pumpkin for me so I could peel it and cut it up into smaller pieces to cook for our dinner.  Made hamburgers to accompany the pumpkin.

Daddy went up on the roof to see if he could see why so much water keeps leaking down the wood stove chimney when it rains.  Wan kept patching up there with the hydroseal, and Daniel did it once.  Daddy didn’t have any trouble finding the problem.  The sleeve that goes around the stove pipe to help keep the rain out was not sitting down on the roof so water was easily getting underneath it.  Daddy got that tightened down and patched up with hydroseal so hopefully that will take care of the problem.

After nap, I cut up a nice popo and we had some for snack.  Then I worked on cleaning out my sewing repair box.  Fixed up a little baby dress that was in there, and a slip that I am needing.  Tacked down a loose pocket on Daddy’s long-sleeved blue shirt.

After supper and dishes, I practiced keyboard for about 40 minutes until time for Bible school.

“For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”  I Corinthians 1:21

A Different Sort of Day

September 2.  I was thankful to get a fair amount of sleep last night.  I did have to get up in the middle of the night for more aspirin.  Today I felt like I must have some kind of flu - chills until mid-afternoon.  The whole body has been hurting, and I have been moving in slow motion.  And the weather didn’t warm up much or get very sunny until later in the afternoon.

After breakfast, I put eggs on to boil for egg salad sandwiches at noon.  Only a couple eggs left.  Some of the people said the hens aren’t laying right now.

I was thankful for the Lord’s help through school.  It seemed like a long morning.  I did take quite a long nap this afternoon.  As long as I stayed under the cover, I felt nice and warm, but as soon as I put my arms out, I felt chilled again.

It was 3:00 when I got up.  Had a little fruit snack and then finished grading today’s papers and recording grades.  While doing that, I got warmed up nicely under the skylight in the office.

After that, I had to make granola.  Then washed and cut up the rest of the carrots (did not peel them - had saved out the best ones last time so I wouldn’t have to spend a lot of time peeling).  Then started making spaghetti.

I cleaned up the kitchen and started the dishes, and then Daddy kindly finished up the dishes for me.  While he was doing dishes, I practiced keyboard a while.  Then had my soda drink and a nice bath.  Got some things written on the chalkboard for tomorrow and got a snack.  Did a little bit of printing and photocopying.  Now it is 8:45 already.  I was hoping to get an e-mail off to the girls this evening, but don’t know if I will get to it or not.

“25  Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, 26But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: 27To God only wise, be glory through Jesus Christ for ever. Amen.”  Romans 16:25-27

September 3.  The evening is drawing to a close.  It has been a different sort of day.  The Lord did give us a good amount of sunshine although the air never got too warm.

Found out yesterday that a group of people were planning to take coffee to Okapa today.  So after the students came to school this morning, I asked them if they didn’t need to go and sell coffee too to help with their youth camp expenses.  They said they were thinking about going Thursday after school, but it really would be better for them to go with a big group.  So I gave them a couple days off to go out with their coffee, and told them we can just move the end of the term ahead, depending on how much time they need to take off for going to youth camp and getting ready.

After they left, I got an e-mail written to Christy and Connie and sent journal notes.  Then Daddy and I went for a walk in the nice sunshine.  We would have walked a bit more, but the wind started blowing, and I didn’t want to have more trouble with my ears and throat.  I was thankful to be feeling much better today than yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised that I had enough strength to walk to the top of the airstrip and back.

After we got back, I finished getting our new prayer card made up and sent that off to Christy and Connie.  Then it was time for dinner, and then nap.

Most of the afternoon was spent working on pictures for missions conference display.  Then I made lemon coconut bars for Daddy and ginger cookies for myself before fixing supper.  There were quite a few dishes this evening so didn’t get to the computer until a little after 6:30.  Finished up the conference pictures and got them put into e-mails to send to Christy and Connie.  While they were sending, I had lots of time to do other things.  It must have taken them about an hour to go out.

“God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.”  I Corinthians 1:9

August 31.  A few sprinkles this morning after we got up.  Most of the day was nice and sunny.  We were thankful for a good day for hanging the laundry outside.

Mike finished up his series on the love of God this morning.  There were quite a few prayer requests, and there were a good number here for lotu.

Shortly after lotu, Daddy started the generator, and we did the laundry.  While clothes were washing, I worked on math lesson plans.  Sosthenes, Graham, and Phinehas cut firewood.

After hanging out the clothes, we talked with Christy and Connie for about 40 minutes.  That was the best part of the day.

After that, I practiced some songs until time to get dinner on the table.  For dinner, we just had leftover veggies, and rice with the leftover chicken gravy.

I had quite a bit longer nap than intended so didn’t have much time to get other things done this afternoon.  Right after nap, I sorted and washed a bunch of pumpkin greens that Mora had brought yesterday.

Elma came to get some things for the baby.  She had a baby boy this past week - their sixth child.  I was glad that she came so I could talk to her about her need of Christ.  Didn’t have a long time to talk with her, but just enough to plant a little seed.

Was hoping to make cookies and granola, but didn’t get time for that.  Daddy still has a few cookies left that the Venters brought him from the SVS bakery so he is okay yet.  And we don’t need the granola before Tuesday morning, although sometimes I like to have it in the evening.  I did need to make biscuits for my supper.

After supper, I got the greens cut up and on to cook.  Then I started the dishes and Daddy finished them for me.  I was thankful for his help as I needed to get some song sheets printed out for the youth that are going to youth camp.  A little after 7:00, they were here and ready for practice.  They want to learn parts of several songs in case they have an opportunity to sing specials.  We got only one song practiced - “Jesus Loves Me” in English and in Pidgin.  I did talk with them a while before we actually started, however.

Now it is after 9:30.  I just had my snack, and now we need to have a bath.

“16Let not then your good be evil spoken of: 17For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.  18For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.  19Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.”  Romans 14:16-19

September 1.  It was very cool most of the day, and the fire has been going all day.  The Lord sent us a pretty good rain this afternoon.

I was awake for well over an hour during the night last night and could feel a cold coming on.  I have not felt very well today.  Wish I had some Clear Lungs.  Took a two-hour nap this afternoon.

People came fairly early for church this morning.  What a surprise to see Wenera here!  He has another wife now, name Julie, and three little girls.  He was here for both meetings today.

Matthew covered all of 2 Corinthians chapter 2 in the first meeting.  Did a great job.  Phinehas and Taqita responded to the invitation.  I didn’t hear the second meeting as I was sleeping, but Daddy said David covered a good part of the lesson on what to teach when going on outreach or witnessing to others.  There are lots of Bible verses in that section.

This afternoon, I worked on lesson material that needs to be printed out for this week’s school lessons.

There were lots of dishes to wash this evening, and it took me quite a while to get done.

Then I practiced keyboard until about 6:45, and after that, did some printing.

Daddy has been able to start soul-winning class back up this week so he is in the other room now teaching that.

“1We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.  2Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.  3For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.  4For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”  Romans 15:1-4

August 29.  It was well after 10:00 before we got to bed last night.  Then about an hour later leg pains forced me out of bed for a mineral drink.  I had forgotten to have some in the evening.  I was thankful for a pretty good sleep the rest of the night.

The day dawned clear and sunshiny - a perfect day for a flight.  I fixed rice porridge for breakfast.  It was a first for the Venters, and they seemed to enjoy it.  After breakfast, Gill did the dishes.  I got the bed made, read my Bible, and swept the floor before heading off to school.  Toward the end of Bible class, Daddy came in and said that the plane would be here shortly.  So we ended that class so I could say good-by to the Venters and so the students could carry their baggage to the airstrip and say good-by to them there.  We had enjoyed a good time with them.  I hope they didn’t get too worn out.

I did not go up to the airstrip, but enjoyed a little time out in the sunshine until after the plane left.  Got a video of the plane taking off.

When the students came back we had phonics class - read and discussed the next lesson in the reader, and the students answered questions on it.  After recess, they made flash cards for the 9 division facts, did some drill, and had their math lesson.  Most of them are having trouble multiplying when the three-digit multiplicand has a zero in the middle.  So we’ll have to do more practice on that tomorrow.  In social studies class, we reviewed what they’ve learned so far about the continents, and then did the lesson on directions - north, south, east, west.

For dinner, we had leftover chicken ‘n’ veggies ‘n’ gravy on rolls.  When we got up from nap, the weather had completely changed - very cool and cloudy, and some rain too.  Daddy got the wood stove going after a while.  I had a little bit of grading and recording of grades to do.  Got things ready for school tomorrow.  Put all the pictures into the computer that I had taken the past few days and started editing them.  Finished the job of editing after supper and put the video in the other computer and then on flash drives.  I must have taken about 100 pictures.  Deleted several of them, and had around 90 that I edited.  I still need to compress them all.

I was thankful for a nice stand-up bath this evening.  Now it is 9:00 so am late writing in the journal again.

“7For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.  8For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.  9For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.”  Romans 14:7-9

August 30.  This morning dawned bright and clear just like yesterday morning.  It looked like it would be a beautiful day.  But the clouds soon came, and the morning never did warm up much.  It was very cool and windy this afternoon, and Daddy got the fire going again.

Before school this morning, I had a little time to work on lesson plans for next week.  Don’t have quite as much to plan since we missed a couple days this week - on Monday the kids were too tired after mourning for the dead, and on Wednesday they had the special teaching session with the Venters.

In Bible class today, they reviewed the books of the Old Testament, then Romans 10:12, then some music theory, before practicing a couple exercises and short songs on the keyboard.

In phonics class, we reread the lesson in the reader, did the exercises in the reading workbook, and started the worksheet.  They are starting a series of lessons copying poems now.     They look forward to Friday math class as they get to play a math game.  Then in English class, they had a spelling quiz and a review lesson on nouns and verbs.

After school, they asked about practicing some songs to sing at the youth camp if they are given opportunity to sing.  So we will try to practice on Tuesday and Saturday evenings before they go.  There are three Saturdays and three Tuesdays left until then.  They said there are 15 young people planning on going, plus David and Mike.

We had sandwiches for lunch and then enjoyed a nice nap.  After nap, there was grading and recording of grades to do.  For snack, I warmed up some of the banana bread and mashed the rest of the strawberries with a little sugar.  We enjoyed the strawberries on top of the banana bread.  Then I worked more on lesson plans for next week before starting supper.  Put a pot of rice and soup mix on to cook.  Cut up the other broccoli and peeled and cut up carrots and put those on to cook.  My, it takes so long to peel those little carrots!  My shoulder was hurting quite a bit by the time I was done.  Warmed up the rest of the ranch style beans which we enjoyed on the rice.

Not too many dishes this evening which was nice.  When I finished doing dishes, I picked out some songs to practice with the young people.

Daddy is having Bible school now with the men.  They were supposed to come last night, but they all forgot.  It has been quite a few weeks since they have had Bible school as there were no lights in the evening.  We are thankful to have the generator back.  Even though it doesn’t work quite right, at least it works enough to have some power, until Daddy can find another generator.

“11For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.  12So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”  Romans 14:10,11

August 27.  The day began with clouds and several attempts at rain.  There was some fog, but it was thin and moved on quickly.  After breakfast and quiet time this morning, I started getting a few things ready for meals and snacks to have with our guests who would soon be arriving.

At 8:00, we started school.  All the students were here today.  We finished lesson 3 of Daniel and then looked some more at the drama for the end of the school year.  We had just gotten started in phonics class when we heard the roar of the plane engine.  The students wanted to give a “royal” welcome to our guests so they took the PNG flags up to the airstrip and escorted our visitors down to the house.  It was a joy to meet Heinz and Gill Venter.  Brad spent a little time with us also, and there was a young man named Philemon who was also with them.  He grew up in Lae, but now lives in Switzerland – is just in the country for a visit.

They did bring our generator back, praise the Lord.  Daddy and the men put the new voltage regulator in it, but when they tried it out, it wouldn’t work.  So they took it out and put the old one back in.  It has been a blessing to have power again this evening after being without it for about a month and a half.

I talked with Gill a little bit and then went back to finish phonics class.  At recess time, I fixed the visitors some coffee, and they sat down for a coffee break while I went back to do math class.  Then we had a short break and had spelling class since we didn’t have it yesterday.

After that, I busied myself getting lunch and talking to Gill.  We had soup (which I had made yesterday), egg salad sandwiches, cucumber, and avocado.  After dinner, we talked for a while.  Then Heinz and Gill went for a rest and Graham and Steve did dishes.  While I was getting lunch they also peeled and cut up carrots which would be cooked later for supper.  And while we were eating, they went down to Janeth’s and brought up the rest of our freezer items that were down there.

After they were done, Daddy and I had our naps.  Right after nap, I started supper preparations.  It was already 3:30.  Cooked the chicken in the pressure cooker.  Cut up some broccoli and cooked it with the carrots.  Made a pie crust.  Then sat and talked with Heinz and Gill about their program for tomorrow and their ideas for teaching oral English.  Then I got the chicken pot pie made and put into the oven for supper, and Heinz and Gill cut up fruit for a fruit salad.  Michelle had sent us some strawberries which made a wonderful addition to popo and bananas for fruit salad.  Michelle had also sent homemade chocolate chip cookies and homemade fudge with nuts and cherries.  They tasted very good.

The Venters brought us extra meat and veggies as well.  Heinz and Gill gave Daddy and I gifts of pens and writing pads.  And a church book club from South Africa sent us some chocolate bars (including an organic milk chocolate bar) and also sent a few school supplies such as pens, mechanical pencils, thumb tacks, paper clips, lollies, and stickers for their schoolwork.  I will need to write thank you notes to all of these people.

We ate supper around 5:30, enjoyed a cup of rooibos tea, cleaned up the supper table and put food away.  Then we sat and chatted in the office area until the Venters went to bed (a little before 9:00).  Sosthenes and Phinehas came a little after 7:00 and did the dishes.  I also had them take dried corn off the cobs.  And I let them try some strawberries.  They liked them enough to have more, but there weren’t enough to give them more.

Now it is a little after 9:30.  Daddy just turned the generator off a few minutes ago, and the house is quiet.  I will wash up soon and go to bed too.  Need to get up early in the morning and fix breakfast.

“8Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law….  10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”  Romans 13:8,10

August 28.  Going on 10:00 p.m.  It has been a long but fun day.  The Lord gave us warmth and sunshine.  I was up before 6:00 so I could finish making the banana muffins and get them into the oven.  That would be our breakfast, along with fruit - popo and apples.  After breakfast, Gill was a blessing and washed the dishes so I was able to get the bed made and read my Bible before lotu.  Amos taught on Acts 1:12-14 in lotu.

Right after lotu, Heinz and Gill started setting up for school.  They did not wait until the people left so all the people, of course, wanted to stay and see what was going on.  First they taught the students some facts about air and did some experiments to show them that air has weight (air pressure) and takes up space.  Then we had an early recess, and after recess, Heinz taught them some things about South Africa.  After he finished teaching, he had them play a game matching some South African animals with the names to see if they remembered what they were taught.  The nine students were divided into three teams and each team had a turn to match the names while Heinz timed them to see which team did it in the shortest amount of time.  After that, Gill told a story and I translated it.  Then they all made friendship bracelets with bead kits that the Venters had brought with them.  Even the five fathers were able to make a bracelet.  There are a couple more colors than the wordless book, but they can still all be used to share the Gospel.

While they were doing the bracelets, I got things ready for lunch so we were able to eat a bit earlier today.  We also had nap a bit earlier - since there weren’t many dishes, I didn’t have the boys come at noon.  They came this evening instead.

After nap, I heated the oven and put the rolls in that I had made before lunch.  They would go with our supper.  While the rolls were baking, I went for a little stretch in the sunshine with Heinz and Gill.  They wanted to walk further on up the mountain, however, so I left them and came back to the house.  When they came back, we all sat and talked a while.  Then Gill peeled carrots for me while I got ingredients together for ranch style beans.  Our supper was ranch style beans, carrots, and rolls.

Got the kitchen cleaned up and then sat around and talked some more.  Bethuel and Dallas came to do the dishes.   I got dishes put away as they washed them.  Gradually people drifted in for a special meeting with Heinz and Gill.  They were given this time to ask them questions about themselves, South Africa, or anything else they wanted to ask about.  I did not go to the meeting - too much to do.  I wrote some thank you notes for Gill to deliver for me, photo-copied the story Gill had told today, cut flash cards for the kids to make their 9 division cards tomorrow, and did a few other odd jobs.

Now it is after 10:00.  I am tired and am going to go brush my teeth, wash up a bit, and crawl into bed.

“11And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.  12The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.  13Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.  14But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.”  Romans 13:11-14
