PictureFarewell beautiful Owena mountains!

Sorry about the two colors in the entries below.  Weebly isn't letting me change the color on part of it for some reason.

November 4.  (written morning of November 5)  It was quite a day!  Praise the Lord for His grace and strength and presence with us throughout the day.
We were up before 6:00 to do last minute packing, have breakfast, do up dishes, and close up the flat.  Jason and Melanie came around 7:15 to help us load things up in their vehicle and take us to the airport.  Went through security check and then checked in baggage at the AirNiugini desk.  Had to pay K278 overweight which wasn’t too bad.

We didn’t have to be there for the plane until almost 9:00 (flight was scheduled for 9:35) so we dropped Jason off at the MAF hangar (he wasn’t scheduled to fly today but had to work in the office) and went to their house with Melanie for a while.  Jason found out, however, that the Hagen twin otter pilot was sick and they were wanting him to come to Hagen to fly.  So when it was time to go back to the airport, Jason came along, too, to get a ticket with Airlines PNG to take him to Hagen.  We had just been waiting a few minutes in the terminal again when we saw the worker erasing the time off the white board and writing in new time - ETA 10:10 and ETD 10:35.  So now we had another hour to kill.
Said thank you and good-bye to Jason and Melanie. Left our carry-on bags with security.  Then Jay and  Mel went to Airlines PNG where Jason would fly from, and Daddy and I walked up to Papindo to get a drink.  We thought we would have time to sit down in the café for a while, but the time went quickly so we drank our drinks on the walk back.
The Dash-8 300 arrived just about as scheduled - 10:10.  We boarded as soon as all the incoming passengers had disembarked.  It looked like there were about 50 seats on the plane which was only about 2/3 full.  There was lots of space between seats, and we enjoyed having enough room to stretch our legs.  They said the flight would be an hour and ten minutes, but we arrived in Moresby after just about an hour.  Maybe there was a wind that pushed the plane along.  Daddy was sitting by the window and was able to see Owena as we flew by.  I couldn’t see very well and had the seat belt on because of turbulence.  We flew through clouds almost all the way.
The scary thing was that wind was (or seemed to be) getting into the plane somehow, and every so often it would howl loudly and rattle the overhead rack near the entrance.  The flight attendant didn’t seem to be too concerned about it, however.  They served us a little snack of orange juice and cookies (no label on the cookies, but they looked and tasted like the Paradise strawberry crème shortbread cookies (PNG made).  They taste good, but are quite sweet.
We had originally planned to have lunch at the airport in Moresby; but since our flight was delayed an hour, there was no time whatever for getting lunch or even a snack.  By the time we disembarked, walked what seemed like a long distance from the plane to the baggage claim area, claimed our baggage, walked another distance to the international terminal (each of us pushing a cart of luggage), stood in the check-in line for some time and at the check-in counter just about as long, went and paid the overweight charge (K1000 this time), used the facilities, went upstairs to the immigration area and filled out the immigration card, went through security and immigration check, and got to the gate of departure for Brisbane, people had already been getting on the plane.  Before boarding the plane, we had to give up our drinks at a security check point just before the ticket gate.  Not allowed to carry drinks on the plane any more.
Flew on a 737 to Brisbane.  Very narrow aisles.  Very narrow spaces between seats.  So crowded.  Every seat filled.  No room in the overhead for our carry-on bags so had to put them (except one) under the seats in front of us.  We hadn’t been on the plane more than ten minutes, when the plane took off - about 1:30.  I was hungry, tired, and very thirsty.  They said something about giving us a meal so I thought I could wait a while.  But they didn’t start serving for a long time, and then started at the front.  We were a long way back, and we could see it would be quite a while before they got to us.  Finally I had Daddy ask for a drink of water for me because I didn’t want to get dehydrated.
We finally got our meal - around 3:30 or so I think it was.  I was so thankful.  I enjoyed the fish (didn’t eat the white rice) and veggies.  The dessert (orange cake or carrot cake?) tasted good but was too sweet so Daddy finished it up, and I finished up his rice pudding which wasn’t as sweet.  Daddy had chicken. I had had a big piece of chicken for my lunch at Papindo yesterday, I requested fish.  I had apple juice to drink with my lunch and another glass of water, I was so thirsty.
Felt refreshed after eating.  The flight was about three hours long, and by the time I got out of those cramped quarters in the plane, I could hardly move.  We were almost the last ones off the plane, and by then, my feet were quite swollen.  That slowed down my walking quite a bit, and Daddy graciously slowed down to wait for me.  Everyone else had gone way on ahead.  A worker standing on the exit ramp asked if I were okay.  I said I was okay, but just having a hard time walking.  Told him that Daddy hadn’t thought to ask for wheelchair assistance when he booked this first lap of our journey.  Bro. Schmidt booked the rest of the journey and has wheelchair assistance requested for us.
The worker on the ramp kindly offered to walk with us for a ways and then pick up a wheelchair for me.  He said that is part of his job.  We were very grateful.  It was a loooooong way to the baggage claim area.  When we arrived there, he had two other assistants waiting to help with the baggage.  What a blessing!  I wish we had some English tracts.
They took us from there on a short cut to customs.  We had to open two of our bags, but there was no real problem, and the customs officers were very nice.
It was only a short distance from there to the exit doors so I walked the rest of the way, but the two assistants still helped push our luggage carts.  Daddy exchanged the rest of our kina for American dollars, and then we went outside to meet the Turtles.  It was a little after 5:00.  We waited a while, and there was no sign of them.  Just about everyone else was gone.  After a while, Daddy went inside to call them on the free phone, but was told the cell phone number was disconnected.  There was no answer at home, of course, because they weren’t there.  Daddy tried twice calling the cell phone, and one of the workers tried twice, but same message.
Finally around 5:30, Norm and Chris pulled up.  Daddy was still inside, but came out shortly.  We were happy to see them.  Their vehicle was a bit small, but they managed to squeeze all our luggage in.  We enjoyed a nice ride from Brisbane up to a place called Redcliffe which is not far from the ocean.  There is a nice breeze that blows here most of the time.
By the time we got here, it was 6:00.  We worked a bit on settling into our room while Chris put supper on.  It must have been 7:00 when we ate.  I was so grateful for nice fresh veggies and for fruit salad for dessert.
            “
Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.”  Romans 3:20

November 5.  Thank you, Lord, for a long night’s rest and a quiet restful day.  Took a shower shortly after supper last night and then went right to bed after reading a few verses in my Bible.  It was about 8:30.  Got up once in the middle of the night (about 12:30), and it was 4:30 before I got up again. But I still went back to sleep for another hour after that.  Sun starts coming up around 4:00 a.m. here.
After we got dressed and read Bible, breakfast was ready.  For breakfast, we had cereal with banana.  Daddy had a cup of coffee, and I had orange cinnamon rooibos tea.  After breakfast, I set up the computer out on the back veranda in the nice fresh air, wrote a couple short e-mails, and started writing yesterday’s journal notes.
At 8:00, Chris was ready to go off to help in their church’s day care program so we walked part way with her.  It was a nice walk up to the end of this road, across the cross road, and down a path to a walking/biking trail.  We only went part way with her, sat down a few minutes on a bench to rest, and then came back to the house.
Then I turned on the computer again and finished yesterday’s journal notes.  At one point, when I looked up, I was startled by a gray snake, about three feet long, starting to come onto the veranda.  I hollered out, “A snake!”  Daddy came outside and saw it before it turned and slithered across the grass into the flower garden.  He went to get Norm; but by the time Norm got there, the snake was gone.  Norm got out his camera and wanted to get a picture, but we couldn’t find the snake.  He said they have seen snake skins around but had never seen the snake.  We gave up looking and I was going back to the computer when I saw the snake a couple feet off the ground crossing from one bush to another.  The men came searching again but could not see it.  We didn’t see it any more after that.
When I was done writing journal notes, I studied my testimony notes for a while; but before I finished, I felt sleepy and went to lie down.
After a while, Norm called us and asked if we would like to go see the church/school where Chris was working.  So we got up and got ready to go.  It is quite a place.  Has just about everything from 12-hour day care for newborns and toddlers, classes for all the school years, a huge auditorium for church services, and much more (six stories in the main building).  The day care/nursery school was separate, and there was also a large area with retirement housing (independent living) and care facilities for those who could no longer live independently.  They used to have a Bible college as well, but she said it isn’t going now.
When we came back to the house, I finished studying my notes while Chris fixed lunch.  She made muffin-sized flan, and we had salad as well.
Took another nap, and a little bit later, they asked if we would like to go for a ride.  We drove along the roads that go by the ocean and saw all the ritzy houses that people are building.  Canals are being made from the swamp areas, and numerous housing developments are going up around the canals.  We saw hundreds of huge yachts in the canals.
Stopped to visit friends of Norm and Chris.  These folks are in their 80’s but still travel back and forth to Western Province in PNG where they worked for many years.  They said they just recently completed a Bible in the language of the people they worked with.
For supper, Chris prepared fish, mashed potatoes, and fresh veggies.  Fresh fruit salad with yogurt was served for dessert.
Later we played a game c
alled Qwirkle in which we had to match colors and shapes in a certain order to get points.
“21But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”  Romans 3:21-26

The Last Three Days in PNG

November 1.  It has been a cool, cloudy day with just a wee bit of rain.
Not much going on today.  Made pancakes for breakfast. Finished the letter I started yesterday to Mike.  While we listened to a sermon this morning (Finish Your Course by Pastor Terry Cruse - a very good message), I took up the hem on the legs of Daddy’s brown trousers.  Before dinner, I went through some more CD’s that we had.  Threw out a few and kept a few.
Daddy tried to help me find a good picture of a PNG flag on the internet.  Am looking for a nice picture to put on the PNG flag tract.  Finally found one that is close to what I want, but may end up just taking one myself.
Got a letter written to Matthew this evening.  All of Daddy’s work of translating Isaiah got left behind in Owena.  Never did get a chance to copy files off the Acer before we left.  I feel badly that Daddy did all that work, and now we don’t have access to it.
“7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.”  2 Timothy 4:7,8

November 2.  Mostly cool and cloudy again today with rain this afternoon, but a little more sun than yesterday.
Also this morning, Daddy had to take Jeff and Elizabeth and children to the airport.  They are taking their little girl to Australia to try to take care of a health problem.  While Daddy was out, he got a few things that we needed.  I busied myself deciding what would be needed for tomorrow and Wednesday morning and packing things we don’t need.  Got a letter written and attached that to an e-mail for Christy and Connie to print and mail for us.  Wrote one other short e-mail.  When Daddy got back from town with some glue, I finished gluing the rest of the pictures into the sea life scrapbook.  When we tried to send e-mails, only two went out, and then it wouldn’t work anymore.  It has been such a frustration while we’ve been here.  So Daddy took the computer downstairs, and they helped him get the e-mails out.
Prepared October progress report today and have that ready to attach to an e-mail for Pastor O.  Finished up a couple letters to put in the box going to Owena, and now that box is all ready to go.  Am thankful to have that done.
Later this afternoon, Jenny came for a visit, and her brother Peter was with her.

“….as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”  Romans 1:17b

November 3.  After breakfast this morning, we washed clothes.  While we were down washing clothes, David called Daddy to tell him that he is teaching the deacons how to make outlines and is also teaching them how to lead others to salvation through faith in Christ.  Praise the Lord that he is taking responsibility and doing things that it is right for him to do.
After the laundry was hung, we came back upstairs.  I wrote an e-mail.  Daddy proofread the e-mail and sent it off, but had to use the SIM card from his phone because the K5 he put on the modem yesterday was gone.  We can’t figure out why the money is disappearing.  Daddy has spent K45 this past week so we’d have enough money on our modem to send e-mails; and after sending one or two or three e-mails after each addition, the money is gone.  When we were in Owena, K20 would last several weeks and could be used to send and receive lots and lots of e-mails.
After that, I took up the hem on my school jumper because it was a bit too long, and I would often trip on it when getting up out of a chair or when climbing stairs.
About 10:30, Daddy called Jenny to see if she and Peter could be here by 11:30 so we could go ahead up to Papindo and get lunch before it got too crowded.  Once the crowds come, it is hard to find a place to sit.  When he called, they were already on their way up here.  After they arrived, we had them come in for a while, and I showed them some pictures of our farewell day in Owena.
On the way to Papindo, we stopped by the post office.  Daddy checked the mailbox one last time (nothing there) and then turned in the key to the workers.  He called me in to say good-bye to Joann, but all the workers came over to say good-bye.
When we came out of Papindo, Wilson was there and went along with us to the next place.  Jenny wanted to go to a photo place to have a picture made of her with Daddy and me.  They made an 8x10 of the three of us and also a 4x6 of the four of us.  After that, Jenny sent Peter to get some money from the ATM machine, and we wandered around Bintangor a bit while we waited.  The system was down so they couldn’t get money from the machine so they went into Bintangor and bought something and were able to use their bank card to get money when they paid for their purchases.  Jenny gave us K100 gift.
After that, we dropped off Jenny, Peter, and Wilson at the corner of the street that goes down to market.  Then Daddy dropped me off at the house.  I got a drink and then went down to bring in the clothes.  Carried the hang-up clothes upstairs first.  Then went down to get the basket.  It was too heavy for me
to carry up all those stairs so I kept moving it and setting it down two steps ahead of me until I reached the top of the stairs.  After that, I lay down for nap.
Daddy went from here to MAF to take a box that is going back to Owena with some things for Sunday school, some letters, and a few other items we didn’t have weight room for in our suitcases.  MAF is making a school charter flight into Owena tomorrow so will take the box in on that flight.
Not long after Daddy got back, I got up from nap (it was a short nap, but there was lots to do).  We packed almost everything into the suitcases that we thought we’d be taking along on our flights so Daddy could check the weight.  Too heavy.  So then we started going through the suitcases and seeing what else we could get rid of.  Then we re-weighed.  Okay now it looks like, unless the airline scales weigh heavier than ours like MAF scales do.
By then it was after 4:00, and Daddy was going to go down and burn the trash when we suddenly remembered we had to have the office downstairs print out our boarding passes for our flight to Moresby.  Office would be closed at 4:30.  Hurry!  We tried to get boarding passes for the on-going flight to Brisbane too, but they weren’t available.

While he was down there, Christie called to say good-bye to me.  I told her I would come downstairs and say good-bye so I did that.
Afterward, Daddy burned the trash, and then I fixed supper.
Right after supper, I wrote names and addresses on the name tags we had bought and put the name tags on the suitcases.

Resting and Preparing for the Long Trip back to the USA

11/11/2015

Hello, everyone!
These journal notes cover the end of October, some of Mom and Dad's last few days spent in Papua New Guinea.  Mom and Dad are now in Hawaii and have one more long leg of their journey to complete on Saturday.  Thank you for your prayers for them!

October 26.  After our breakfast of leftover pancakes, we did the laundry and then went to West Goroka to shop.  Got a few little things and brought them back to the house.  Then went to market and uptown.  It was very hot uptown.  I was thankful that there was a breeze.  There has been a nice breeze most of the rest of the day.
About noon before we got back to the flat.  While Daddy was getting the clothes in, I got things ready for lunch.  We had leftover rice and cabbage from Saturday with the rest of the meat we still had leftover from eating out with Remi and Tjandra.
After nap, I did the dishes, folded the clothes and finished writing the ministry update e-mails.  Don’t know what the problem is with our server, or maybe with Digicel.  We are having a hard time sending the e-mails out.  Finally sent part of them, and need to try again to send the rest.
“And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.”  Isaiah 59:16

October 27.  It has been another hot, dry day.  I am sweating this evening as I sit here working at the computer.
This morning, Daddy tried sending the rest of the e-mails that I wrote yesterday.  He was having all kinds of problems getting the SIM cards right.  He had his, mine, and the Digicel cards all mixed up.  He finally got them straightened out, but we still couldn’t send e-mails.  He finally took the computer downstairs, and they sent right out from there with no problem.  The worker said that the wireless Bible which is set-up outside our door is probably interfering with our transmission.  So when we want to send e-mails, we’ll have to take the computer outside and try.
While Daddy was downstairs, I straightened up the room and then wrote a short letter to MAF Hagen to tell them thank you for working out flights for us to get out of Owena to SIL and then to Goroka.
Afterward we went uptown and got a few little things -- a new change purse for Daddy, several hair holders for myself, chocolates and lollipops to send back to Owena for the Sunday school kids, one onion for K2.70 (about $1.00), and a couple bouillion cubes.
Went into Goroka Stationery to try to find a pocket-sized photo album.  Didn’t find one.  Got home around 11:00.  It was already getting too hot to be out.  Wrote a couple more e-mails and then got lunch.
After nap, we wrote an e-mail.  Then I prepared carrots, bok choy, and onions to cook for supper.  Found the copy of my autobiography on a flash drive and put it in the computer.  Started adding to it.  Prepared the Alaskan Pollock and Mahimahi that we had bought at Papindo the other day.  Made cheese dumplings to go on top.  Delicious!  First fish we have had in a long time.
After supper, I started putting my autobiography into outline form before doing dishes.
“To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”  Acts 26:18

October 28.  After breakfast this morning, I wrote e-mails again and Daddy sent them out.  Then we went uptown so I could get the rest of the candies to send to Owena for Sunday school.  Also picked up a carry on bag at Papindo, and some PNG key chains to take home for gifts.  Brought those things back to the flat and then did a little second-hand shopping.  There is one more second-hand store I would like to go to, but did as much as my legs and back would allow today.
Slept quite a while at nap time, but wasn’t feeling well.  Also had woken up at 4:00 this morning so was pretty tired.
This afternoon, I wrote a thank-you note to Jason and Melanie.  Also started taking heavy things out of the suitcases so we won’t be overweight with our baggage.  Packing a few things into a box to give to Melanie.
This evening, I finished gluing bird pictures into the scrapbook to send back to Owena.  Still need to do fish and animal scrapbooks.
“I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.”  Isaiah 63:7

October 29.  A very warm night last night.  We were up at 5:30.  Had hot rice cereal for breakfast.  It was 6:30 when Daddy went out to fill up the laundry tub so we could do laundry.
Checked through some of our CD’s to see if there were any we don’t need or that don’t work any more.  Threw several more out.  Checked the flash drives to find one that I could put my autobiography on for Daddy to take downstairs and get printed.  I thought I had brought a printed copy but couldn’t find it.
Started working on a power point presentation for showing in churches.  Wrote a thank you note to Remi and Tjandra.  Also spent several hours today working on the creation scrapbooks to send back to Owena.
Did not go out shopping today.  Daddy went uptown around 11:30 to go to the bank and exchange money and try to get travellers checks.  He was going to have lunch at Papindo café too.  I guess he had quite a time at the banks so I was glad I didn’t go.  Found out that the banks don’t handle travellers cheques anymore.  Now he’ll have to exchange all our kinas for US dollars cash.  He exchanged some for Aussie dollars for us to use in Australia.
After he left, I went do
wn and brought the clothes in.  Then I made leftover soup for my lunch.  It was lonely eating lunch by myself.
“But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.”  Isaiah 64:8

October 30.  The Lord sent us rain yesterday evening, and power went out.  We were thankful it was only out for a short time, and we praise the Lord for the rain.  It must have rained during the night as well.  Daddy said he was awake at 4:30 and heard rain, and I heard rain when I got up at 5:15.  It has been a cool day.  Cloudy and rainy again this afternoon.  Raining steadily this evening.  Power was out for a little while.
This morning, I checked through more CD’s to see what we could get rid of.  Then I was going to work some more on the presentation I had started yesterday, but power point wouldn’t even come up.  Daddy took the computer downstairs, and they found that some serious error had occurred.  I was thankful they were able to fix it, and I worked for quite a while this morning finding pictures for the presentation.
While Daddy was downstairs getting the computer checked out, I wrote a letter to Bonita.
Then Daddy went uptown to get the American dollars he didn’t get yesterday, a carry on bag for himself, some luggage tags, and a couple little food items.
This afternoon and evening, I spent more time on the scrapbooks.  Have the big one almost filled up - mostly with animals, and finishing it up with people.
“And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.”  Acts 28:23

October 31.  Last day of October.  Only three more days left here in PNG.
Very cool and cloudy most of the morning today.  Nice sunshine this afternoon.
Finished up the animals/people scrapbook this morning and got that packed into the box to go back to Owena.  Started so
rting through the sea life pictures and got them set up for gluing in the sea life scrapbook.
Cooked the deer meat for our dinner today and made a gravy for it.  Also cooked up the other bok choy with the rest of the carrots and some onion, and fixed a pot of rice.  The deer meet tasted quite good.
After nap, I started gluing sea life pictures.  Then I took a shower and washed my hair, and then cut Daddy’s hair.  Glued sea life pictures until I ran out of glue.  (Just a few more pages to do, but will have to wait until Monday to get more glue.)  Then it was suppertime.
Now the power is out.  It is dark except in the part of the room where the battery operated light is on.  It is hard to use this computer when there isn’t much light because the keyboard is black.
“Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.”  Acts 28:31
