Heading Out to Texas

January 11.  (written on January 12)  Praise the Lord for His goodness, mercy, love, and grace today.
I did not sleep very well last night.  Stomach was hurting when I went to bed so could not get to sleep. Finally got up and made a lemon-soda drink which helped a lot.  Didn’t get up until around 7:00 this morning.
After breakfast, Daddy swept the floors, and I put all the small rugs and the dirty rag towels in the washing machine.  There was last minute packing to do as well.  Otherwise it was a quiet morning.  I wrote a couple e-mails, but was too tired to concentrate on computer work so did some crocheting.
I was thankful for a nap after lunch.  Then the dishes had to be done before we left, and some food items put in the freezer.
A few minutes after 3:00, Bro. Clarke arrived and took us to the Charlotte airport.  Arrived there around 4:00 and checked in, went through security, and found our gate.  There was time enough to get a bite to eat before our 5:21 plane flight.  Wendy’s was close by so I got a cranberry pecan chicken salad, and Lewis got a double burger.  The salad was huge, and I couldn’t eat it all.
Shortly they announced that our plane was delayed because of weather.  The plane that was to take us to Chicago would not be in for quite a while yet and would not leave Charlotte before 6:30.  That meant that we would miss our connecting flight to Dallas.  Daddy went to the desk to see what could be done; and, praise the Lord, they transferred us to a direct flight to Dallas on American Airlines.  A special answer to prayer!
We had to go to another gate and terminal for that flight which was to board around 6:30.  As we were sitting there waiting, a man came and sat down a couple seats over.  Shortly Daddy noticed that he was reading a book that looked like a Bible.  When Daddy asked if that was a Bible, he said “Bible, Arabic.”  The man did not speak English, but could say a few words.  He pointed to himself and said “Christian.”  Then “Jesus - God.”  It was exciting to meet him even though we couldn’t communicate with him.
On the plane, I sat next to another woman in her 70’s so engaged in conversation with her.  She had come from Roanoke and was going to be with her daughter in Arlington, TX.  Originally she is from NC so is familiar with Shelby and Kings Mountain.  We talked about our families and other things, but also had the opportunity to tell her a bit about our ministry in PNG and also how the Lord had answered prayer for our flight to Dallas today.  Said she attends a Presbyterian church, but didn’t keep the conversation going to be able to get into more personal spiritual things.
Landed at Dallas a little before 8:30 CST, but it took a long time to get to the terminal.  Bro. Cobb arrived shortly after we got there, but our checked baggage did not arrive.  United had promised to transfer it from their flight to the American Airlines flight.  Daddy checked at the desk and found out that our suitcase indeed did not make it on our American Airlines flight, but it was on the next flight from Charlotte which would be arriving in a half hour.  It would be at another terminal, however, so off we went in the car to the other terminal.  Praise the Lord, it was on that flight.
Picked up our bag and headed for Bowie.  It was after 10:00 now.  Stopped at a Burger King for a bite to eat.  Arrived at BBTI around 12:30 a.m., very tired, but thankful to the Lord for bringing us safely here.

January 12.  Slept in until I’m-not-sure-what-time this morning.  Daddy got up at 7:30, and I was still in bed for another half hour, I think.  After taking a shower, eating breakfast, and having quiet time, I wrote in the journal what I could remember of yesterday’s events.
Daddy gave a good message in chapel this morning from John 6, the missions miracle.  It is one he has given before, but it always speaks to my heart and seemed to speak to the students’ hearts too.  Visited with a few people afterward, but I was so tired, I could hardly think straight.
We had our lunch (breakfast too) in the kitchen (where food is provided for guests to use) and then went for nap.  I slept close to 2 1/2 hours -- just could not wake up.  After I finally got up, we went for a walk around the campus.  It was a lovely, sunny, blue-sky day, and the walk was refreshing.   Had some good conversations throughout the evening.
“5Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”  Ephesians 1:5,6

January 10.  Christy picked us up for church this morning.  The weather felt fairly pleasant so I figured a sweater would do for going outside.  When we got to church, however, the wind was blowing strong, and there was a chill in the air.
Enjoyed Mrs. Surrett’s Sunday school class this morning - a good lesson on reflecting Christ to those around us.  Pastor Ogle’s preaching on giving from Philippians 4:14-19 was also a blessing.
It was good to see Paul and Sarah Crow at EBC today and a blessing to hear their children sing with Bro. Paul this evening as Sarah played the piano.
Was thankful for the Lord’s help in getting this month’s ministry update written today.
“Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORDare right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.”  Hosea 14:9

January 8.  Rainy and chilly damp today.
Did not sleep well last night.  A lot of stomach pain.
We went out sometime after 8:30 this morning [to go house hunting].
From there we went to the bank  and next to Aldi and then WalMart for a few items.  And last of all to Verizon to try to iron out our phone problems.  They are very helpful, and a lot more can be accomplished by going there in person than by trying to do business by internet or phone.
Worked on pictures for our presentation for a few minutes until lunch time and again this afternoon. Also made Lewis some oatmeal cookies this afternoon.
“6Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.  7Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.  8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.  9So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.”  Galatians 3:6-9

January 9.  Praise the Lord for less pain and a better night’s rest last night.
This morning, I put the bedding and a few other things in to wash.  Then I emptied all my craft stuff out of the PNG Travel suitcase and organized it into a couple boxes.  Then we started packing the suitcase with things to take to Texas.  Also wrote a list of things to pack later so I don’t forget.
When the bedding was done washing and drying, we remade the bed.
Updated income report before starting dinner -- beef lentil soup.
Christy and Connie came just a few minutes before the clock struck midday.  Their printer gave up the ghost today.
Part of afternoon time was spent getting the Love, Mercy, Grace material set up in booklet form.  Also transferred photos from camera to computer and sent some to Connie.
Later Connie and I looked at crocheted scarf patterns together and then she sent me a link for free patterns.
Worked more on the Love, Mercy, Grace booklet this evening before doing dishes.  There were lots of dishes again.  After that, I looked through some of the scarf patterns and picked out one to work on.  Started working on that a little bit later this evening.
“4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.  6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.  7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”  Galatians 4:4-7

Good Days Out!

January 6.  Another cold, nippy day, but the sunshine felt good.  It was a day to get out of the house for a while. Around 8:30 or so, we left the house to go to Kings Mountain.  Stopped at Ingles first to see what they had.
Next we went to the Neighborhood Wal Mart.  Said “hi” to Bro. Carpenter who was working in the produce area.  Bought a few groceries there, and then went to Roses.  It was a little after 12:00 when we got home.
After nap, I washed the blanket we had bought at Roses.  It was irregular and had some black marks on it; but with the pre-wash spray, they were gone after washing.  I was thankful for that.  Now I am washing the comforter.
Also finished up the last quarter 2015 income report this afternoon.        Around 4:30, I started getting supper.  Cut up part of the broccoli we got today, also the rest of the baby carrots, some celery, onion, and garlic and put them on to cook while I prepared the rest of the ingredients for the casserole - leftover rice and chicken, a bit of fresh parsley, a cream sauce with some herbs, and cheese on top.  Don’t know why I didn’t think of Braggs (soy sauce) since we just bought some at Ingles today.

January 7.  The Lord gave us a pretty nice day today -- still cool and windy, but warmer than the past couple days.  Today was go-to-Charlotte day.  A little after 9:00, Daddy left to go get Connie.  It was after 10:00 before they got back here.  Loaded up a few things and headed for Charlotte -- first for Connie’s chiropractor appointment; then to Trader Joe’s to buy a few groceries.  From there we went to Hobby Lobby in Gastonia so Connie could get a few craft things.  Then to Blacksburg, SC for gas before coming home.
By the time we got food put away, it was after 3:00.  I was good and ready for a nap.
“20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.  21I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”  Galatians 2:20,21

Frustrating Days!

January 4
.  Quite cold again this morning, and a cold breeze today too.  Daddy and I did go out for some sunshine for just a few minutes late morning, but the wind was too cold for us to stay out long.
I was thankful that my stomach was feeling a little better today though still not up to par.  At least I felt like eating a bit more.
It was a very frustrating day.  I tried working on the pictures for our presentation, but the photo editor in this new computer kept locking up and wouldn’t do anything.  I had a hard time even getting the photo editor to shut down.  I finally gave up on the computer and worked on Connie’s photo album most of the day.
This afternoon, right after I got up from nap, another unwanted text message came on my phone.  Had gotten one yesterday evening too.  I was quite upset about that.
Daddy was in bed a while today with a bad case of vertigo.
And this evening, I sent journal notes to Connie; and when I looked in the sent box to see if it had sent, it showed that they had sent it to everyone on my list.  I only told them to send it to Connie.  I wasn’t trying to send it to anyone else.

January 5.  Very cold today, but no frost and the sun was shining.  Close to noon, we ventured out for just a few minutes to get some fresh air.
This morning, I wrote a few e-mails, sent a text message, and spent more time on Connie’s photo album.  This afternoon, I put the final touches on Love, Mercy, and Grace, and then edited pictures for our presentation.
Other than sending the text message, I did not touch my phone at all.  When it rang, I let Daddy take care of it.  Every day now there is an unwanted call.
(Mom was able to get her number changed but was still getting unwanted calls and texts.)
And there are still frustrations with the new computer (both with the Windows 10 and the Office 365) which are getting to be too much of a headache.  So this evening, I gave the new computer to Daddy, and I’ll stick to the old one.  So much for my pretty red computer.
I’m thankful that this old one still works, and I hope that it keeps working for a long time.
Enjoyed a nice chat with one of my sisters this evening.
“Finally, brethren, farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.”  II Corinthians 13:11

Stomach Bug Strikes!

January 1, 2016.  The beginning of a new year.  We decided to go out shopping today since we are getting low on food.  Left a little after 9:00 and went first to Big Lots to get insoles for Daddy, Keurig reuseable coffee filters (which we saw there yesterday), and Folgers decaf coffee.  Next to WalMart to get a few things, some of which we didn’t find.  From there we went to Aldi, but it was closed so we didn’t replenish much of our food supply after all.  Then we went to the new Rescue Mission Thrift Store on Washington St.  I was thankful to find a few warm blouses there.  Everything is half price right now.
By the time we got home, it was dinner time.
While we were napping, Christy and Connie came.
This afternoon, I tried working more on the Love, Mercy, Grace file; but it has been hard to concentrate today.  Have a bad sore on the roof of my mouth, and it makes the whole right side of my face hurt and has given me a bad headache.

January 2.  Started having pains in my stomach during the night, which felt worse when I slept on my back so kept turning from side to side.  Had some papaya enzymes when I got up in the middle of the night.  After I was up for a while this morning, I felt like throwing up so took activated charcoal and have taken that often throughout the day.  I feel hungry, but when I eat I feel sick; but when I don’t eat, I feel sick.
Made a few pancakes this morning for Daddy.  Then added pecans and blueberries to the batter to make pancakes for myself.
Did a couple loads of wash and wrote a few e-mails.  Went to Aldi to get the groceries we couldn’t get yesterday since it was closed.  Started to go to WalMart too, but figured it wouldn’t be worth it for just one item, and I wasn’t feeling well besides.  Made a quick stop at Big Lots, and Daddy ran in to get grape juice and All-Bran.
Got home around 12:30 and had lunch.  Christy and Connie didn’t get here until about 1:30.  They spent more time shopping than we did.
Didn’t sleep very long at nap time.  This afternoon, I worked more on Love, Mercy, Grace and finished the Mercy section this evening.  Now I just have Grace to do.

“16For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.  17For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; 18While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.”  II Corinthians 4:16-18

Stay-at-home Day and then a Busy Day

December 30.  Seemed to be getting a sore throat last night.  Back was hurting too so slept very restlessly.  The Lord used my pain and restless night to stir me to pray for a friend.  It got very warm during the night too.
Today was a stay-at-home day -- very rainy with some thunder and lightning.  There was flash flooding in several areas of the county.  Wrote a few more e-mails today.   This evening, a church function was planned with a time of fellowship and games before time in the Word.  Because of the weather, we didn’t go out.  I had planned not to go even if the others did go because it is too easy for me to fall when the ground is so wet, and also because of my throat being sore.
“3Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; 4Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.”  II Corinthians 1:3,4

December 31.  The last day of December and last day of 2015.  It hardly seems possible.
Around 8:45, we left the house to go to the DMV, Verizon, and Big Lots.  DMV was still too busy so we didn’t stay.
Next stop was Big Lots to look for a thinner blanket because it has been too hot at night for the comforter.  But they only had warm winter blankets and comforters.  Just bought a few food items and then went across the highway to look at Harbor Freight.  Daddy wanted to see what they have for tools.  He needs to get some tools to put in the car.  Didn’t buy anything today, but can go back later.
Last of all, we went to Verizon.  We were ten minutes early so sat and waited in the car until almost 10:00.  Lots of other people were waiting too.  When the doors opened, there were a number of workers waiting right there at the door to serve those who came in.  Now that’s a good way to do service.  We were in Verizon for about an hour, and arrived home around 11:00.
Today most of my work time was spent working on the “Love, Mercy, Grace” file.  This evening I proofread through about half of the Sunday school lessons that Christy had printed out and brought to me for that purpose.
Late afternoon, C&C came and stayed until almost 9:00.  Christy will get off at noon tomorrow, New Years Day.
“6For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  7But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”  II Corinthians 4:6,7

Reporting on the Ministry and Enjoying Company

December 27.  Had most everything ready yesterday evening (for dinner today with Chuck and Mary and Mel and Ellen) when Daddy received another call from Chuck.  They were only as far as Maryland because of car problems and would not make it here in the morning.  If they got an early enough start, they may make it for the evening service, they said, or they may just go on down the east coast.  We let Mel and Ellen know, but decided we would still have them come for dinner since we had so much food prepared.
So we were up early this morning to make sure everything was ready for guests later.  Took a shower, fixed Lew’s breakfast, then my breakfast, had quiet time, and got the house in order for dinner.  Left here a litle after 9:30 for church.
In the main service, Pastor Ogle preached on Philippians 4:8, an excellent message and very thought-provoking.  It is so good to sit under the teaching of God’s Word for a while.
Went through SC after church to get gas.  Started warming up dinner shortly after we got home.  C & C came shortly after us, and Mel and Ellen not too much later.  We enjoyed the time together.
This evening, Daddy gave a report of our ministry to our own church.  A lot of people were not there today -- many sick, many gone for the holidays.  There was one whole section of chairs almost completely empty.  It was good to see Dennis and Jennifer Running who had come to hear Daddy.  And shortly before Lewis was called up to speak, we looked back, and there were the Chamberys.  We motioned for Bro. Schneider to send them over and sit with us.  We were so glad they made it.
After the meeting, the Chamberys moved their trailer over, but could not move it close to the building which they had hoped to do so they could hook up to the power.  The area was too wet and muddy from the rain.  Then they rode back to the house with us for an ice cream supper and time for visiting and fellowship.  Daddy called Mel and Ellen and had them come over too because Chuck and Mary wanted to see them.

December 28.  It was going on 10:00 last night before Daddy took Chuck and Mary back to their trailer.  I stayed here and did the dishes.  It was 11:00 before we got to bed - very tired.  And it was after 7:00 when I got up this morning.
We went uptown to the post office to mail a birthday card, to the bank to cash some checks, and to WalMart to get a few items.  It was 1:45 before we got home.  Put away the food, had lunch, and then lay down for nap at 2:32.  I said to myself, I will sleep until 3:22.  That was a pretty close guess.  When I awoke and looked at the clock, it was 3:24.
While Daddy was still sleeping, I took advantage of the quiet to read my Bible some more.  Got things together to work on Connie’s little album and then started supper -- spaghetti tonight, and salad to go with it.  Put the leftover chicken in the freezer for another day.  We’ve had lots of chicken and turkey lately.  Found some leftover fish in the fridge.  Had completely forgotten that there was some left.  Yes, it was spoiled, so out it went.  I was sorry it had gotten forgotten.  Also found a little bit of leftover turkey stew.  That had to go out too.
After supper, I worked on the album for a while.  Then I did the dishes, had a little snack, and enjoyed my evening Bible reading (one of my favorite chapthers, I Corinthians 15).
“57But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”  I Corinthians 15:58

December 29.  Light rain in the morning, but turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day.  Must have been around 70.  We didn’t go anywhere until evening, but enjoyed getting outside and walking around in the sunshine.
Today was e-mail writing day.  Spent most of the morning answering e-mails.  Also wrote a thank-you note and worked a while on Connie’s photo album.
In the evening, we went over to Christy and Connie’s to see if I could find the files I need to help me get the correct cloth pictures with the Sunday school lessons for Owena.  They have the pictures there in Owena, but I wasn’t sure which numbers go with which lesson because I can’t remember what number was on what picture.  I didn’t find the file I was looking for, but did find the Firm Foundations book that we translated the original copies from so I was happy about that.  It will help me to see what pictures go with what lessons.
“13Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.  14Let all your things be done with charity.”  I Corinthians 16:13,14

December 25.  Very warm and humid during the night.  Another very humid day.  A little rain this morning and some this evening.
Can’t remember what time I got up, but it wasn’t early.  Had a sore throat yesterday evening and this morning.  It seemed to have gone away before the morning was over, however.
Had a shower, breakfast, and quiet time.  Got out scrapbooking things to try to work on Connie’s little album, but I am lacking a few supplies.  I was able to start trimming photos and organize things a little better, however.
Around 9:30, I started work in the kitchen.  Made a coffee cake first and put that into the oven to bake.  Then I got out the chicken, sprinkled it with salt and some herbs, covered it with aluminum foil, and put that into the oven.  I thought it would only take about two hours to cook and would be done around 12:00, or 12:30 at the latest.  Wrong thinking.  Didn’t realize the meat was still quite frozen in the middle.  After it heated enough so I could get the pieces apart, I separated them and put some in another pan.  They were all chicken legs.  12:30 came along, and things still weren’t done, so I called Ellen (Judy's sister) to let her know.  She said it would be okay if we were late.
When I checked the chicken for doneness at 12:30, I discovered that there was lots of broth.  So I poured the broth off into a pan; and while the chicken continued cooking, I made some gravy.
It was about 1:15 when we finally left here.  Got to Ellen’s house around 1:45.  Christy and Connie were already there.  We ate our dinner and then sat around and talked.
Left Ellen’s around 5:30.  The clouds looked beautiful but very threatening.  Stopped to take some pictures.  Stopped and looked at a house on Cider Dr.  It is one we have been seeing signs for that is for sale by owner.  We will call to see what he has to say about it.  It may be too small.
We were thankful to get home just in time before the storm arrived.
No nap today so we were both tired this evening.

December 26.  A rainy day was predicted to come after the morning fog; but it turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day, and very warm.  We left here around 8:40 to go pick up Christy and Connie for our trip to Hickory.  The parking lots and stores were quite crowded today.  Went first to Sears.  Looked at the mattress sets again downstairs.
Went back upstairs to pick up our glasses.  Wow!  What a difference!  I’m so happy to be able to gaze through clear lenses after several years with cloudy, scratched glasses.
Next stop was the food court to get something for lunch.  Christy got a tuna melt sub at Subway.  Lew got a meatball sub.  And I got a tuna veggie salad.  From there we went up the road to Wendy’s so Connie could get a cheesy baked potato and a frosty.  Daddy and Christy each got a frosty too.
Last of all, we went to Ollie’s, a discount bargain store.  Looked around for a while, but mostly I was looking for a Bible.  Found only one KJV Bible that I was happy with, and it was the only one of its kind.
After that, we headed to C&C’s house.  The weather was pretty warm by then, and Daddy put the A/C on in the car.  It is hard to fathom having the A/C on late in December.  They picked up their van, and we all went to Aldi and WalMart in Shelby on the way to our house.  Needed to get a few groceries for dinner tomorrow.
It was 4:30 or so when we got home.  No nap again today.  Lots of work to do to prepare for dinner tomorrow.
“4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.  8Charity never faileth….”  I Corinthians 13:4-8

December 23.  The Lord sent us a rainy, rainy day.  Our 46th anniversary today.  Praise the Lord for His faithfulness through the years.
We went to Big Lots.  It was open early for the holidays.  Hardly anyone there.  We enjoyed leisurely looking around.  Then we went to the little Sears home store at the other end of the shopping plaza.

Came home after that.  Had snack and answered text messages and phone calls most of the rest of the morning.  Worked a little bit on the marriage booklet until dinner time.
This afternoon, I worked a bit more on that and also on the love section of Love, Mercy, and Grace. Christy and Connie came around 4:00 to be with us for our anniversary.
We had leftover turkey soup for supper.  For dessert there was banana pudding that Connie had made.  I cut up the fresh strawberries to go with it.  Yum!  The girls gave us a Keurig brewing system as a gift.*
“Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.”  I Corinthians 11:1

*Note:  A friend of ours gave toward this gift as well

December 24.  Some rain today and very, very humid.  Daddy and I went out early this morning to get a few groceries at WalMart and Aldi.  On the way home, we went down Dellinger St. to South Hampton to look at a house, but it looked too small.
After arriving home and getting the food put away, I worked on the marriage booklet until time for lunch.
For supper, I baked a squash, cooked up the broccoli, and made a salad.  Lewis wanted a hamburger so I fixed one for him.  I just had the veggies and salad.  That was all I needed.
Daddy had a call from Chuck C ( a friend), but it was an oops.  He was trying to call the church to find out about the services on Sunday.  He and his wife are on their way to Florida, and they were going to surprise us by stopping in for church tomorrow.  They will still stop in, but it won’t be a surprise.
