Happy Birthday, Mom!

Today is Mom's birthday.  I pray God is giving her a blessed day!

“11But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.  12For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.”  Psalm 5:11,12

November 2.  Praise the Lord for a good day!  It was another very warm day, and it is raining this evening.  It tried to rain this afternoon while we were having our nap.  The winds started howling, and the thunder roared, but only a few drops of rain fell.  After a while the sun came back out bright and strong.

Shortly after 5:30 this morning, I heard the neighbor’s rooster fly over the fence into our yard right next to our bedroom wall.  I knew he was going to give his “rise and shine” call.  He did - twice.  Time to get up.

Warmed up the rest of my leftover pancakes for breakfast.  Had quiet time.  Took some pictures of the decorations the students had put up yesterday evening.  Made sure everything was ready for the program.  Edited pictures that I had put into the computer yesterday evening.

The school kids were all up early too and met at Sosthenes’ house to cook food for their families.  9:00 came and went, but the families hadn’t come yet.  It was after 9:30 before the families started showing up and going on 10:00 before we started the school program.  I’m not sure what time we finished, but it was 12:00 before everyone had gone out outside to eat.

I thank the Lord for a good morning, a good opportunity to be a blessing, share the gospel in song, and have a good time together with the students and their families.  I welcomed the families and thanked them for allowing me to teach their children.  I called on Daddy to pray, and he said a few words too before praying.  Then the students went up front and said and sang their verses - 9 verses in Owena, plus the books of the New Testament in Pidgin - and then sang five other songs - The Promise Songs (well, actually six songs because there are two promise songs), Isn’t He Wonderful (five verses), Heaven Is a Happy Place, Repent and Believe (tune of Only Believe - chorus) both in English and Pidgin, and Emmanuel Has Come (tune of O Come, All Ye Faithful).  How I wish somebody could come and teach these kids music!  They love to sing, have good voices, and harmonize nicely (I didn’t even teach them to harmonize - they figured out a harmony themselves).  Bonita has a lovely, clear voice and catches on well to the timing too.

After that, I gave out the award certificates.  Each one received a certificate for excelling in a particular subject.  Bonita received an award for greatest improvement over the year (my, she has come a long way!), and Graham received the excellence award because he excelled in many subjects.

The video was next.  We let them stand up and stretch while we got things ready for the video - had to put up a sheet to show it on, cover the windows and also the skylight to make the room dark, turn on the computer and projector.  Daddy had to go start the generator too.  The video lasted about 20 minutes and was all pictures of various activities the kids were involved in throughout the year.  At the end, however, I had put animal pictures.  I had cropped the heads of each student and put each one’s face on an animal picture.  Everyone got quite a charge out of that.

After the video, I gave announcements and asked for questions.  Then Esau gave a little thank you speech to the parents and the kids one by one stood up, called their father to come up, and presented him with his gift.

Then I asked if any of the fathers would like to say something, and Matthew stood up and gave a little speech.  Afterward, I asked Amos to give thanks for God’s help throughout the school year and for the food they would be eating.

Before they left, we took pictures of the students as a group, and also each student with their family.  They made fast work of taking down all the decorations and then went outside to eat.

I fixed lunch for Daddy and me.  Then we went out and talked with David and Silvia a while before we had our nap.  David had been here finishing up the short wall he was making to protect the back steps from the rain.

This afternoon, I swept up the schoolroom and took down the school banner, practiced the choir songs, and then put today’s pictures in the computer.  I must have taken about 50 pictures last night and today (Daddy took some of them for me) plus several videos.  I will have to put the videos in the Acer, however.  Have not been able to find any place in this computer for videos.

Made spaghetti for supper this evening.  Got dishes done and finished editing the photos I had put in the computer earlier.  Had a bath and got a snack.

The men are here for Bible school this evening so Daddy is busy teaching.

“24Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.”  Matthew 16:24,25

Decorating for Closing Program

The students were very excited as they were decorating for the closing program.

November 1.  Woke up and got up early this morning - 5:30.  No school today.  The students went to get food for tomorrow and decorations too.  But it was wash day.  By 6:00, I was all ready to start washing clothes so Daddy went and turned on the generator.  Only had two loads of clothes so took down all the kitchen curtains and the laundry room curtain and washed those.  While the clothes were washing, I made hot rice cereal for our breakfast, ate, and read Bible.  I thank the Lord for a nice morning and was happy to get out in the sunshine.  The days have been getting hot quickly lately.

When I came back inside, I relaxed in the recliner a while.  Then did some walking and praying before getting busy going through books and starting to get books together for the next school year.

Later in the morning, Daddy suggested going for a walk.  I thought that would be nice.  It had been quite a while since I’d been able to get out for a good walk.  We hadn’t gone far, though, when I knew I wouldn’t be going far.  Much too warm and very humid out.  We just went across to the middle of the airstrip, then down to the bottom, and back across to the trail that comes back up to the house.

After that, I wrote a couple e-mails before warming up dinner.

Cut up a couple small popos this afternoon and made popo crisp.  Wrote a couple more e-mails and then sent them.  Swept the schoolroom and washed the doors so the place will be clean for tomorrow.

As soon as the generator went on this evening (6:30), all the school students were here with all the leaves they had gathered for decorating the schoolroom.  (A line of other children, and some adults too, followed them here; but none were allowed inside except the school students.  We covered both the windows with blankets so they wouldn’t be standing outside looking in too.)  The students really went all out.  (They must have brought some leaves and put them under the house when we were having our nap because I could smell the sweet smell.  Later I saw Graham and Sunny leave the yard so figured they must have brought more leaves.)  All the walls and doorways and rafters are covered with leaves.  (We’ll be smelling the sweet smell all night, I imagine.)  Besides that are the chains they made with pieces of colored straws, the geometric shapes they had made a few weeks ago in school, the signs and banners, and blue and yellow balloons.

When the decorating was done, we practiced all the verses and songs once again before they went home.

“29For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.  31Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.  32For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.  33But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.”  Proverbs 1:29-33

School Fun Day

October 31.  Last day of the month.  Only two months left in this year.  My!  Where has the year gone?

We are thankful for another lovely day.  Enjoyed leftover pancakes for breakfast.  No time for walking after quiet time this morning as it was lotu morning.  Daddy continued teaching on things we have in Christ, talking about “fellowship,” and “victory over Satan and sin.”  There were quite a few prayer requests today.

Around 9:00, we started our fun day.  We drew names to see who would start the first game.  Then for the next game, the first one became last, and so it went throughout the morning.  They first had to arrange in order the words of Psalm 118:24.  Bonita won that game, finishing in only 35 seconds.

We played a different version of pick-up-sticks in which they had to toss a small ball into the air, let it bounce once, pick up as many sticks as they could, and catch the ball.  Each color sticks counted a certain number of points.  Bethuel won that game.

They had fun playing pass the broom, a substitute for musical chairs.  As the music played, they passed the broom from one to another.  The one with the broom in hand when the music stopped was out.  Graham won that.

Bethuel also won the game in which they tossed buttons onto an old calendar page and added up the points where the buttons landed.  But the prize went to the next highest who hadn’t gotten a prize yet (Sosthenes).

Steve won the English word game.

Sosthenes and Dallas tied in the math game, quickly answering the most multiplication and division problems correctly.  Dallas got the prize since Sosthenes already had one.

Esau won the scavenger hunt, and Steve won the puzzle game, putting his puzzle together in the shortest amount of time.  But he already had a prize, and Phinehas hadn’t won anything yet so we gave the prize to him.

I know Sunny got a prize, but I cannot for anything think of what other game we played.

Esau won the door prize, guessing closest to the number of items that were in a small bottle.  At first, he and Graham wrote the same number, so they had a runoff, and Esau got the prize - the contents of the bottle.

After the games, they had their refreshments.  Then I gave them their report cards, and they went home.

Daddy and I had our lunch and nap.  This afternoon, I sorted and washed the greens, and washed some spring onions to cut up with them.  Then decided to do something sitting down since I had been on my feet most of the morning.  Practiced the choir songs for New Year’s.  Then I cleaned things out of the two white desks in the office, and Daddy fixed the one desk that was coming apart.  I put away papers I don’t need anymore and started getting out next year’s school books.  (Well, I guess all that wasn’t exactly sitting down work.)

Cut up the onions and greens and put them on to cook for supper.  Warmed up part of the leftover rice, mixed with the leftover uxai.

Kristina came by with two of the little ones to see if we need pumpkin.  She said that Rebecca’s sores are completely healed now.  She was very thankful that we had given her the Noni oil.  Her father made her a pair of crutches so she can get around.  She still can’t straighten one knee to where she can walk.  But I was glad to hear that she is trying to get around.  It has been a long road of recovery for her – over a year since she got sick.

“47Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind: 48Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.  49So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, 50And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”  Matthew 13:47-50

Getting Ready for School Fun Day

October 29.  Rain early this morning  until about 8:00.  Then the sun came out for the morning.  This afternoon, the rains came again, and the air has been quite nippy.

We spent the first part of the school morning learning a little bit about music and practicing the new song “Imanyuel I Kam Daun.”  Then we practiced all our verses and songs again.  Finished a little bit early and started English class a little earlier.  Today we finished up lesson 18 in English - reread the lesson in the reader, did the pages in the reading workbook, and did the worksheet.  They had fun drawing green frogs in the grass.  It was a green picture.  That was our last English class for the year.

After recess, we looked at Bonita’s stones (I need a stone expert to help determine what kinds of stones they have).  Then we did some more of unit three in their science book.

After school, Bonita and Sunny shelled corn, husked corn, husked uxai, folded clothes, and swept the floor while we had dinner.  Then Sunny said her verses for the term.

When they left, we had our nap.  Afterward, I cut up another big popo, and we had some for snack.  The rest is in the fridge.  Then I practiced playing the songs that the choir will be singing for the New Year meetings.

Worked on a soul-winning lesson for a while before supper.  This evening, we need to try out the projector and see how things are going to work for showing the video on Friday.

“18Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.  19When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.  20But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; 21Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.  22He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.  23But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”  Matthew 13:18-23

October 30.  A little rain before sunup this morning, but the Lord gave us a lovely, sunny day.  Breakfast was granola with bananas.  There was plenty of time after quiet time to walk and pray.  Then I worked on the soul-winning lesson until school time.

The students wanted to do their science lesson first so we did that.  Took a short break and then practiced for the program on Friday.  Had recess.  Spent the rest of the morning making signs and decorations for Friday.

Had a longer nap than planned because of interruptions.  The rest of the afternoon, I worked on the soul-winning lesson and finished that up.  Also made sure the program schedule for Friday was all in order so I could print that out this evening.  Got the refreshments ready for tomorrow’s school fun day.  In the mean time, SIL landed here, and Daddy went up to talk to the pilots.

After supper and dishes, I went out and burned the trash.  Then I made sure I had everything together for the games tomorrow.  Practiced the choir songs for the New Year meetings before having a bath.

“37He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels.  40As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world.  41The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.  43Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.”  Matthew 13:37-43

Preparing Songs for New Year's Meetings

October 27.  Almost 8:30.  Bath water is hot, and soon we’ll have a bath.  It has been a busy day.  A very warm, humid, and sunny morning; cooler, cloudier and windy in the afternoon; and raining lightly this evening.

Daddy was up chasing rats last night.  Three little fellas got stuck on the glue trap together.  Poor little ratties.  Well, I’m thankful they’re gone.  Little rats soon become big rats and are much harder to catch than the little ones.

People came early for lotu.  It’s nice now that the sun “gets up” earlier so people come on time.  Guess we’ll just have to change our meeting times as the sun changes.  Tomas was supposed to teach this morning, but he was feeling somewhat under the weather with a bad cold.  Amos has a bad cold too.  So Daddy did the teaching, talking about how to pray as taught by our Lord in Mathew chapter 6.  He only covered half the Lord’s prayer as there was a lot of meat in there.  David took charge of singing and prayer time.

After lotu, Bonita stayed and said her verses.  She did an excellent job.  Daddy went and started the generator, and by the time he got back, Bonita was done, and I was ready to start the laundry.  There was a lot of laundry today since it had been a whole week since last time.  I needed extra clothespins today.

I was glad to get back in out of the sun.  It was so stifling hot even that early in the morning.  When I came in, I started preparing greens (just a small bunch) to cook for dinner.  Also husked three ears of corn.  While I was working on that, Erisa came by for a visit.  She still has not been feeling well.  After I finished cleaning the greens, we went and sat down on the bench in the meeting room and talked a while.  I prayed for her before she left.  I feel so sorry for these folks who are so in bondage to a man simply because they are closely related.

After that, I washed the chalkboard.  Then sat down a few minutes before preparing dinner.  Made a spoon bread type of meal and put some onions, the rest of the spaghetti sauce, and the rest of the spaghetti in the middle of it.  Also sprinkled some grated cheese on the sauce.  Put it in the oven to bake and put the greens on to cook.  After a couple minutes, however, the gas ran out.  It had lasted for 13 weeks so we thank the Lord for helping us be able to stretch our bottled gas out.  After Daddy changed the tank, I got things cooking again.  It was about 12:30 before we sat down to eat.  Afterward we got the clothes in and hung up our shirts and blouses and things before nap.  Nap time did not turn out to be very pleasant or restful.  People kept knocking on the door.  Usually if they knock once that time of day and we don’t answer, they know we are sleeping.  But these people just kept on knocking.  I would just about drift off to sleep, and they would knock again.  I got up twice and asked them to come back later.  I was glad I got up because I had forgotten to put the leftover casserole away.  But I wasn’t glad I got up because then my heart got all out of whack and I couldn’t rest after that.  Finally sat down in the recliner and was able to rest there.

After nap, I washed my hair.  Took care of some people at the door.  It was quite a busy door day.  Then cut up a popo.  Put part of it in a saucepan to cook for my pancakes tomorrow and the other part in a dish for us to eat for snack.  Daddy swept the meeting room floor and the kitchen floor.  I swept the bathroom floor and washed the kitchen floor and the dirtiest parts of the meeting room floor.  The poor mop is just about done for.  Hope it will do well enough until we can get to town and get another one.  By then it was time to sit down a few minutes before getting supper.  Worked on some songs I’ve been trying to write for the choir to sing during the New Year’s meetings.  Worked on them several times throughout the day, and finished them this evening after the other work was done.  After supper and dishes, I got the bathroom cleaned before sitting down to work on the songs.  I thank the Lord for His help in getting those written.  One is to the tune of “For God So Loved the World” and the other “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”  (Those were added to the one to the tune of “Why Must I Die?”  Among all my songs, there weren’t any to go with the theme of our meetings.)

Got the music for the songs scanned into the Acer and transferred to this Compaq so I can put the Pidgin words with the music to practice with.  Also got the words to the songs written down in the new lotu song file.

“3And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; 4And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: 5Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: 6And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.   7And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: 8But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold.  9Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.”  Matthew 13:3-9

October 28.  We are thankful for a sunny morning.  Clouds and cool winds came around noon, and the rains came during the break between the two meetings today.  It is raining lightly this evening.

It was a blessing to have bananas today to go with our pancakes.  Antopa and his son brought us some yesterday.  After getting breakfast, eating, reading Bible, walking, and praying, I finished getting the New Year’s meeting songs ready for printing.  Got the music with the Pidgin words printed out this evening plus ten copies of the words.  Don’t know how many we will need.  Will have to get a count before I print out more.

There were a good number here for lotu this morning. Mike looked after the singing for the first meeting.  Amos was feeling well enough to interpret this morning.  Daddy covered I Corinthians 1:20-25 in the first meeting and the rest of the chapter in the second meeting.  The second meeting started almost right away after we ate our dinner since it was raining outside and everyone came in out of the rain.

This afternoon, Miriam came to visit for a while.  It had been quite a while since she last came.  I had sent pictures down with Erisa yesterday that we had taken at Judy’s birthday party in May, and so Miriam thought about coming up to see me.  Oh, how I long to see these families get out from under the bondage they are in down there!

When she left, I got things together for school tomorrow.  There wasn’t really a whole lot to do.  Then I started on a new soul-winning lesson before getting supper.  This evening, people are here for soul-winning class.

“15For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.  16But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.”  Matthew 13:15,16
