Prayer Request for Dad and Mom

4/30/2011

Picture

Dad and Mom called today, and we were excited to be able to talk with them for about a half hour.  They are doing well.

However, they did have one prayer request.  There are two groups in the village who are having a disagreement over some spiritual matters.  This has caused a great deal of tension over the past months.  This tension continues to increase and has gotten to the point where it could turn to physical violence.  Please pray that the influences that hinder the work of the Lord would be removed and that God’s word would have free course among the people there.  Pray that the church will not give in to pressure from other people.  Pray that they will not try to take matters into their own hands but will leave these matters with the Lord and allow the Lord to settle these things.

Will update again when we hear more news.  It could be up to two weeks from now.  But please be in prayer during that time.  Thank you so much.

Pray without ceasing.  I Thessalonians 5:17

Here are some more excerpts from Mom's journal during the time she and Dad were in town.

    April 19, 2011

We weren’t sure if we were going to get to send an e-mail tonight.  The power was out for a while, but finally came back on a few minutes ago.  We thank the Lord that it is on again.

We forgot to bring the CD messages out with us this time.  But we found that with our new computer, we can get the Ambassador messages up and listen to them.  We listened to one on discouragement yesterday.  It was by an evangelist, but I can’t remember his name now.  It was a good message.

It is not quite 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.  The power just went out a little bit ago, and we are working now by candle power.  This is the first time the power has been out in the evening since we have been in town.

Up early this morning so we could wash clothes.  Then Daddy took the Smiths over to the hangar.   We thank the Lord for answered prayer and a dry day today.

When Daddy came back from taking the Smiths to the hangar, we went out to the second hand store.  It is so hard to find things, especially for boys.  There aren’t very many clothes for boys in the second hand stores.  Then we looked around the other West stores since it wasn’t too crowded today.  I finally got to give away one of my children’s tracts today.  There haven’t been as many children around as usual for some reason.  Today a young boy (maybe 10) kept patting me on the arm.  So I gave him a tract.  He seemed happy with that.  Went to Papindo West and got onions and a couple other things.  Garlic was too expensive — the price has gone way up.  Later we got minced garlic in a bottle at SVS for just as cheap.  (See picture of children's tracts above)

Came back to the house for a pit stop.  Then went up town.  First stop was Gouna center, only to find out that the iron gate was shut and all the stores in the center were closed.  There was a man sitting there with some boys.  He said that one of the store owners or managers had had an accident Saturday evening (said the man was drunk).  People came and tried to loot his car so he took his gun and shot a boy.  In turn the people shot him.  Both the boy and the Asian man died.  This afternoon, Daddy read in the Post Courier that there was rioting and looting of the Asian operated stores uptown on Sunday.  So the police came and closed all the Asian stores, except for a couple that weren’t in danger.  Stores in the Gouna center will be closed all this week.  All the other stores opened back up.  So we weren’t able to get the things we wanted at Gouna Center.

After that, we went to SVS and got more yarn (there isn’t much yarn in town at all, especially the basic colors), mayo, the garlic, and kerosene pumps.  Philemon met us there and wanted us to take some things to the hangar that he was buying for his Dad.  He had to be back to school by 1:30.  We went over to the new Green Fern after that, and Daddy got a couple more pair of Dunlop shoes for the teen boys who are getting trees for us.  And Philemon got a box of pens for his dad.  Then we went to Chemica and got a roll of linoleum.

Back to the house after that.  Had lunch.  Then Daddy took more stuff over to the hangar.  I got some of the clothes in.  Started my nap.  Slept a long time.  Have had a bad headache the past couple days.  Took some Para Factors tonight.  Will start on the ParaHerbs when we get home.  Got the rest of the clothes in after nap.  When Daddy got back from the hangar, he took a nap too.

Worked on some e-mails.  Cooked up the napa cabbage for supper.  Had leftover mashed potatoes.

“6But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand.  7So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.  8When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man,
thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.  9Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul….  11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?...  13When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.”  Ezekiel 33:6-9,11,13

“30Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.  31And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.  32And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.  33And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.”  Ezekiel 33:30-33

I guess this is it for tonight.  I’m going to take an eye break and have a snack.

April 20.  A relatively quiet day.  Not too much going on.  Power was off a while again this morning.  We didn’t go uptown until about mid-morning.  Picked up a little bit of meat (beef sausages was all we could find), some fresh veggies, and bread.  Daddy’s cookies weren’t ready so he had to go back and get them this afternoon.

The rest of the day, I did packing and wrote e-mails.  However, they have been working on the internet most of the day so the e-mails are still all in the outbox.  They said things should be back and running this evening.  We hope so, or none of those e-mails will go out until next trip to town.

We are pretty much packed up and ready to go early in the morning.  Can’t really think of any other news tonight.  Next time we come to town will be May 31.

Blessings

This week the Lord blessed Dad and Mom and the church in Owena with something special.  Pictured below are approximately 160 communion cups.  These will be a special blessing to them when the church there observes the Lord's supper.

Picture

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, "Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.  After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.  For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.   I Corinthians 11:24-26

Pidgin Hymn Book Cover

April 17.  It was about 10:45 before we went to bed last night, and we didn’t wake up until 6:30 this morning.  It was still raining when we woke up.  Don’t know if it rained all night, or not.  We only had a little bit of sunshine today.  We are praying for sunshine for a couple days before our trip back to Owena.

It was about 8:00 before pancakes were ready for breakfast.  Just had a few minutes after eating to walk and pray before we called Christy and Connie.  Enjoyed a long chat with them.  After that I got potatoes ready to cook for dinner.  They were nice yellow potatoes again.  I really like the yellow potatoes we get here in town.

Then we had our own time in the Word and prayer.  Forgot to bring out CD messages this time.  We could have gone to church with Hollands, but they left while we were talking with our daughters.  Since we’ll be out at the same time as Hollands again next time, maybe we’ll arrange to call Christy and Connie at a different time so we can go out to church with them.

After that, I sent a note and the progress report off to Pastor Surrett.  Then did the dishes while the taters were cooking for dinner.  We had leftover veggies from the other day.  Power was out for an hour or so around noon so couldn’t send e-mails.

Had a nice long nap too.  Woke up with a headache.  Have been having headaches in the afternoon so know it is time for another parasite treatment.  Power came back on while we were napping.

After nap, the sun was shining a little bit so decided to wash my hair.  It didn’t shine for long though.  By the time I finished washing my hair, we heard raindrops on the roof.

David called a bit ago.  He and family are all really sick with fever, body pains, vomiting.  They have been sick for several days now.  (They were sick the evening before we left.  As a matter of fact, their middle boy, Clemen, has been sick for several weeks now.  Wonder what they have.  If you think of it, please pray for David and famly.)

“And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God.”  Ezekiel 28:26

Work on the hymn book is also coming along.  While Dad and Mom were out in town, Mom sent a picture of the cover for the hymn book.  (See picture above).   Thank the Lord for His help in this project as well.

April 18.  Went to bed a little earlier last night, and got up earlier this morning so Daddy could help Dave and Carol load up the truck and then take them over to the hangar.  So he had his breakfast in two parts — one pancake with eggs before he left, and his other two pancakes when he got back.

We were thankful for a bit drier day today as we are praying for drier weather for when we go home.  Looks like we will be going on Thursday and doing two 206 flights with MAF.  They didn’t have anything else scheduled for that day so maybe we can get in early if the weather is good.

After breakfast, we went out shopping — first to New Century.  Back to the house with stuff from there.  Then uptown to Papindo, Post Office (no mail — boo hoo), Bintangor, Didiman, SVS, a hardware store around the corner from SVS, ChemCare Pharmacy, Chemica.  By then it was 12:00 so we headed home.  Had lunch.  Daddy packed up more boxes and took stuff over to the hangar, then did more shopping.  I had a nap, then did dishes.  Wrote a couple letters.  By then Daddy got back.  Praise the Lord, he had found some pipe fittings at the last hardware he knew of to try  —Tamik Hardware.  And by the time he got back, I was ready for an eye break.  Walked around and stretched my legs and rested my eyes a while, and Daddy looked up stuff on the internet.  I kept watching the clock for supper time to get here — for some reason I was hungry.  Then I got out leftovers, and we warmed them up for our supper — chicken ‘n’ rice, and veggies.

Now it is back to the computer — more letters, journal, and e-mails.

“12Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.  13Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”  Acts 4:12,13

Hastened by the King's Message

Here is a song Mom wrote.  We hope it is a blessing to you.

Hastened By the King’s Message

The King has given a commandment,
‘Tis written in His name for all to hear,
A copy of the writing to all people,
In every tongue, we must declare.

In every city, town, and village,
The message of salvation we must share,
The King’s decree is very urgent;
No time to waste, millions perish in despair.

We must hasten with the message
For souls are doomed and no one seems to care,
Hasten to the world’s remotest corners,
Go with speed; don’t delay; they’re dying there.

Hastened by the King’s commandment,
Run swiftly, take the message everywhere,
Bring light, joy, and gladness to all nations,
Time is short, night is drawing very near.

Farewell Celebration

Farewell, Turtles, and thank you for your years of service in PNG.

The Lord granted Dad and Mom a few days to rest and a short time of fellowship out in town this month.  They were able to attend the farewell celebration for a missionary couple that has been in Papua New Guinea for a number of years.  Here are some excerpts from Mom's journal during time they were out in town.

April 15.  I thank the Lord for a pretty good night’s sleep last night.  This morning, we went out around 8:30 to shop.  It was after 12:00 when we got back for lunch.  Had a long nap after lunch, while Lew went out to do more shopping.  After I got up, I did dishes.  Then started preparing veggies for supper.  Then fixed the chicken and rice.

Lew found out from the Post Courier on-line that the sugar problem is not the fault of bugs, but this past year’s drought.  (There is no sugar available in the country right now.)  After the cane got so dry, then some vandals burned hundreds of hectares of it.

Have been encouraged reading the book of Job now in morning quiet time.  Chapter 19 contains some very special verses, “
25For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: 26And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: 27Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.”  Job 19:25-27

April 16, 2011

    Dear special daughters,

We were happy to get your e-mails, pictures, etc.  It has been a busy day.  It is now 5:00, and we have a little time to relax before going out again.  Wanted to get an e-mail off to you now because I don’t know what time we’ll be back this evening.

After getting the newsletter revised and sent off this morning, Daddy and I went out to the hardware stores to find pipe for pulling water to our new house.  He found the pipe at a good price, but couldn’t find any fittings anywhere in town.  Kelly is quite ingenious though and said that he can fit pipes together by heating them if we don’t have fittings.  He has done it before.  We may have to do that.  We went to look at a couple other hardware stores, but two of them were closed.  There are still a couple up town that he can check on Monday.

When we got back to the flat, I did last night’s dishes.  Then we had lunch, and I had a nap.  Daddy browsed around on the internet.

After nap, we walked on over to the CRMF housing compound for the Turtles’ farewell get together.  There were LOTS of people there – expats and nationals.  Bob and Rhesa (Croot) Bagley were there.  Talked with Rhesa a while.  She said her father is actually doing better.  They were able to do the surgery needed for him to start eating again, and he is out of the hospital.  He doesn’t have teeth so will have to be fitted with teeth later, and will need a lot of reconstructive surgery.  Enjoyed getting to know Elena Smith a little bit.  She is the wife of Randy Smith, the one we had fellowship with last time we were in town.  Elena is really nice.  At the farewell, there was lots of food – finger food, but I didn’t eat much.  After time to eat and fellowship, there were several speeches.  Then they presented a gift to the Turtles and made them give a speech.  It was a good time.  We just got back to the flat a little bit ago.  About 6:15, we will go out again with the Turtles and several other families for supper at Pacific Gardens Hotel restaurant.  So that’s why I am writing now.

The LORD had made them to rejoice

“25And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much. 26And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day.  27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies.  28And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD. 29And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel.”  (II Chronicles 20:25-29)

These verses mark the end of the triumphant story of Jehoshaphat and his people and the victory that the Lord gave them.  There was fear and hard work and a crying out to God for help.  But in the end there were riches and precious jewels and great spoil.

We know that God is stronger than the enemy, the Devil, that would seek to destroy His work.  When God overcomes the work of the Devil and brings victory to His cause, there will be riches and precious jewels and great spoil for those who are on the Lord’s side.  Perhaps there will be a new, strong church.  Perhaps there will be souls, precious souls, that God will give to Dad and Mom for their hire. Perhaps they will have the joy of seeing the word of God translated into the language of the Owena people.  But we know there will be great rejoicing and wonderful blessings at the end of the trial.

Come, bless the Lord with us for that which He is about to do.  Come sing to the Lord with us with gladness, for the LORD will make Dad and Mom to rejoice over their enemy.  Lift up the praise to Him with instruments of music, for the LORD has fought against the enemy of His people.  The Lord hath made us to rejoice.

This is the end of these wonderful verses in II Chronicles chapter 20.  I will try to update again when we hear news from Dad and Mom.  Thank God that the victory is always His.

When They Began to Sing and to Praise

“21And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth  for ever.  22And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten.    23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them : and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another.  24And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped.”  II Chronicles 20:21-24

“Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.”  Thank God for His mercy.  We thank God that He is going to give Dad and Mom the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.  But we do not pray for the human opposition to be ambushed and smitten.  Rather we pray for their repentance and that they might get right with the Lord and walk with Him.  Changed hearts would result in changed lives, and this would bring great rejoicing.

We do not pray that the human opposition would be defeated and destroy one another but that they would be “defeated” in their attempts to continue going their own way and would return to the paths of righteousness and walk in God's way.  We know that the real opposition comes from the devil, and we do pray that he will be defeated, “ambushed,” and beat down so that he will have no more influence in the situation.

For those that are running from the Lord and resisting Him, we pray that none will escape the working of the Holy Spirit and the word of God.  They all need to be held fast by the word of God and have their hearts and lives turned around and restored to the Lord’s service.  Pray also for the mighty working of the Holy Spirit.  Pray that God’s word will have free course and be glorified among the Owena people.  Then will the Lord make an end to the wiles of the devil, and the beauty of His holiness will be manifest in the work there.

Please praise the Lord with us and sing songs of thanksgiving and praise the beauty of his holiness.  God is great, and the victory is always His.

Praise the LORD; Believe in the LORD

“19And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.  20And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.” (II Chronicles 20:19,20)

These verses begin the exciting part of this chapter.  “…praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high.”  Praise the LORD that He is in control of all that is going on in the situation there in Owena.  Praise the LORD that He is doing the work and fighting the battle.  Praise the LORD for who He is.  Praise the LORD that He will bring the victory.  These verses mark the beginning of the praise of the Levites.  They mark the beginning of the victory for Jehoshaphat and his people.  And they give encouragement that God is going to bring the victory to His people today.

Also, these verses contain a promise of good things to come.  “Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.”

Victory comes from praising the LORD in the difficult situations.  Happiness and prosperity come from believing in the LORD our God and in His prophets (and preachers and teachers of the Word).  Please praise the LORD with us and with Dad and Mom.  And please believe in the LORD our God, along with Dad and Mom, that He loves them and is with them and is working all these things out for His glory.  Through Him, victory is sure to come.  Praise the LORD!

Let Me Lean Harder on Thee

Let Me Lean Harder on Thee

Veiled is the future before me:
    Life's checkered pathway I climb,
    God, in His goodness revealing
Only one step at a time.
    Will the tomorrow be clouded?
Will it bring sunshine to me?
Let me lean harder, dear Saviour:
Let me lean harder on Thee.

Let me lean harder on Thee,
Let me lean harder on Thee,
Thro' storm and thro' sunshine, dear Saviour,
Let me lean harder on Thee.

Earth's dearest ties must be broken,
    Time's sweetest roses decay;
Words of farewell must be spoken,
    Evening will follow the day.
Still, waves of joy roll around me,
    Swelling from love's boundless sea,
While I lean harder, dear Saviour,
While I lean harder on Thee.

Let me lean harder on Thee,
Let me lean harder on Thee,
Thro' storm and thro' sunshine, dear Saviour,
Let me lean harder on Thee.

Sometime I'll come to a valley
    Where a grim shadow is thrown;
No human friend can go with me.
Leave me, O Lord, not alone!
    'Till that bright, beautiful morning,
When all the darkness shall flee,
Let me lean harder, dear Saviour,
Let me lean harder on Thee.

Let me lean harder on Thee,
Let me lean harder on Thee,
Thro' storm and thro' sunshine, dear Saviour,
Let me lean harder on Thee.

Copied from Pentacostal Hymns, One and Two Combined, (c) 1894; book did not list author or title of song.

"Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. 2When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. 3For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour."  (Isaiah 43:1a-3b)
