Oatmeal, Fresh Vegetables, and Ice Cream

November 19.  Praise the Lord for a pretty good night’s rest last night.  No rats.  No mosquitoes.  And no boom boom music too.  It was a little after 6:00 when I got up this morning.  After breakfast and quiet time, I tried crocheting a beret according to a pattern I found.  However, I couldn’t get the gauge it called for.  It said to use a big hook, but didn’t say exactly what size “big” is.  Apparently I need a much bigger one than I have.

Wrote e-mails until the Smiths came.  They took us up town so we could do some shopping.  Shopped at the pharmacies and Singaut book store, and then went to Papindo.  Had lunch there and then got a few groceries.  Waited outside until the Smiths came back to pick us up.  We were thankful to find oatmeal this time.  There wasn’t any in town the last couple times Daddy was out.  Got a big container of Bulla vanilla ice cream too.  Had some after we got back to the house.  Then had a nap.

After nap, I washed my hair and then wrote more e-mails.  It was quite hot this afternoon.  Daddy walked up to the West stores but didn’t find much there.  We had supper some time after 5:00.  I cleaned up the dishes and then relaxed a little bit.

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love….”  Ephesians 1:4

November 20.  Slept in until almost 7:00 this morning.  However, we were rudely awakened about 3:45 a.m. with a Mayday call.  Something had set one of the alarms off in the office building.  The men were over here shortly, investigating the situation, but didn’t see any sign of foul play.  They said that once in a while an alarm will just go off.

Sometime after 9:00 this morning, Daddy went out with the Smiths and did a little shopping.  Went to the market too and got some nice carrots, tomatoes, and broccoli.  I didn’t really feel like going out today so I stayed here and wrote some more e-mails.  Also tried to install the PDF program that CRMF gave us.  I guess I did something wrong, though, because it didn’t work after I finished.  Daddy sat with me later and helped me figure out how to fix it.  So now we can convert any kind of file to PDF.  Praise the Lord for that.  I got the tract converted and now can send that to Chad to have him give us an estimate on printing.  I also got the rest of the corrections made in the song file today, and double-checked all the pages to make sure things were lined up right, and there were no hyphens, etc.  I think that is ready for printing now too.

For our dinner at noon, I fixed carrots and broccoli and also made spaghetti.  This evening, we had our sandwiches.  The fresh tomatoes tasted good with the egg salad.  For dessert we had ice cream.

Now it is after 9:00.  Time for shower and soon time for bed.

Off to Town

Here are journal notes that Mom sent from the last three days.  This is about their shopping trip to the town of Goroka.  I'm sorry that I don't have pictures to go with these posts.  Thank you for praying!

November 18.  It has been a long, hot, tiring day.  We are thankful that the Lord gave us good weather for the flight to town.  Today was the last day for the 206 to fly in this area.  MAF is going to set them aside now and use only air vans and twin otters.  That means there will be about 13 airstrips that will not have plane service unless they use the twin otter which is big and expensive to charter.  Owena is included among the strips where the air van can’t go.  (Well, it can go in empty to Owena and out with half a load.  That won’t help too much.)  Hopefully we can share twin otter flights with others.

We were awake last night for a while with a noisy rat.  I thought it was into the bag of plastic bags.  But when I went to check I saw that the rat was on the trap.  It had somehow dragged a plastic bag onto the trap with itself and was trying to get loose.  Hence the racket of plastic bag rattling.  Daddy got up and clobbered it.  But there was still another rat.  It didn’t get caught, and it didn’t eat the rat poison.  It did somehow knock the piece of firewood off the top of the garbage bucket and moved the lid off a bit, but apparently wasn’t able to get into the bucket.  I hope the critter doesn’t do too much damage while we are gone.

Got up about 6:00 this morning.  Warmed up pancakes for breakfast.  Finished up the packing.  That seemed to take quite a bit of time for some reason.  Got things weighed up and boxes taped up.  We had been scheduled for the second flight, but as usual, the flight program changed.  It was still a little after 10:30 before the plane came so we had plenty of time to get ready.  We were thankful for that.  When the packing was done and the kitchen was cleaned up and we were all ready to go, I sat down and went over the rest of the children’s songs in the song book.  Had to make some changes in some of them.  Now I can fix them in the file.

A few of the church men came and did a little work on the airstrip today.  Benjamin was there too and so was Solomon.  It was too hot to work too long though.  A lot of people are still down at the river working on their peanut gardens.

It was about 11:30 when we got to Goroka and noon before someone picked us up and brought us to CRMF.  The haus meri (cleaning lady) was busy cleaning up the flat so it was not ready for us yet.  We were able to put our cargo in one of the bedrooms.  They had had a heavy rain here yesterday, and water flooded into the kitchen and bathroom of this house.  So the haus meri was busy cleaning and mopping up.

Randy and family are in town so he came and picked us up and took us to Papindo where we got a little something to eat.  I ordered a piece of fried chicken which turned out to be just a little chicken leg.  Not much of a lunch.  I didn’t see anything else on the menu that I would care about, except for the bigger expensive meals.  Daddy was still eating (he got a chicken fillet sandwich), and I started some shopping.  I found a small container of soy milk that was low in sugar so decided to get one of those to drink.  Daddy gave me some money and I went to the checkout to pay for it.  I was thankful to have something refreshing to drink.  I was still hungry, but couldn’t find anything else to eat.

Papindo has gotten some new supplies in for the holiday season, and I was happy to see some herbs and spices at affordable prices.  Got fennel powder and sage in plastic packets, and oreganoand parsley in large containers.  We picked up a few other groceries and then walked over to SVS.  Only found a couple things there that we needed.

When we were done, Daddy called Randy, but no answer.  We waited there a while to see if he would call back. Then Daddy saw Randy’s car across the street in Papindo parking lot.  So we carried our bags of groceries over there.  The children - Marcus, Priscilla, and Joanna - were sitting in the car.  Their parents were at the bank.  I was tired and sat in the car with the children while Daddy walked over to Istana to get mayonnaise, only to find that they didn’t have any.  The Smiths have very nice children.

Next we and the Smiths went to Bintangor, and we got meat and veggies and a couple other little things.  Last stop was the post office.  We were able to get a package that was there.  It was from Rod and Staff, and I thought that the books had finally come, only to find out this evening that it was the order of English 3 seconds that Christy had ordered for us.  Don’t know what ever happened to the books we ordered in June.  We got the invoice in July, but the books never came.  The books that came today were just sent on October 17.  We also got a packet of pictures and letters from the girls and a letter from some friends.

Got back to the house some time after 3:00.  Got boxes unpacked and food items put away.  About 4:00, we went down for a little nap.  I was very tired and was thankful to rest.  It was 4:45 when I got up.  I was hungry for some veggies so fixed up the zucchini we bought today and enjoyed that for supper along with egg salad sandwiches.

After supper, I opened the box from Rod and Staff, and then got my clothes unpacked and put away. Daddy had already taken care of his.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ….”  Ephesians 1:3

November 9.  5:45 p.m. and dishes are already done!  That must be a first.  I didn’t have anything extra to fix for supper tonight, and there weren’t very many dishes so we ate early and I did dishes right away afterward.

Heard the lotu bell at 5:40 this morning, but did not get up until Daddy came in at 6:00.  Got dressed and had my early morning supplement.  Then I went and took down the rest of the decorations.

Had breakfast and quiet time, and then it was time for lotu.  Mike deviated from his series on love this morning and shared a number of verses about God’s promises, particularly the promise of eternal life.

After lotu, almost everyone went down to the river to help with Janeth’s peanut garden so it was pretty quiet around here most of the day.

Daddy and I took down all the stage curtains and Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image.  The students and the parents want the drama to be presented again during the special meetings in January.

Got journal notes ready to go to Christy and Connie and also started an e-mail.  Daddy went over to the airstrip to throw around a few shovels full of dirt and fill in some of the holes.  After I shut down the computer, I took the camera and went for a little walk over to the airstrip.  I was hoping the hawks would be flying around again so I could get a picture, but there weren’t any.  I did get a few pictures of Daddy throwing dirt. :-)  I helped stamp down the dirt after he put it in place.  It was a beautiful morning - sunshine, blue sky, and some puffy clouds.

After we got back to the house, I put more pictures in the power point I am working on to go with next year’s drama presentation.  About 11:45, I went to the kitchen to husk the corn and put it on to cook.  The corn was nice and fresh and had some really nice corn silk on it.  (Usually the corn we get has very dry, brown corn silk.)  So I saved the corn silk to dry in the wood stove oven this evening.  Then maybe I can make some corn silk tea.   I saw that the kaukau was starting to get spots so decided I had better peel it and cook it too.  Put all the corn and kaukau into the pressure cooker and got it on to cook about 12:15.  When it was done cooking, I put the rest of the spaghetti on to warm.  There wasn’t enough spaghetti sauce left so I added a can of Cheezy Beans.  It was a little after 12:30 before we had our dinner.

Had about an hour nap, and then got the monthly updates ready to send to Christy for mailing.  Took a break from computer and swept the meeting room.  Then I came back and got the e-mail updates ready to go.  Sent those off and received some e-mails too.

It is raining this evening.  Daddy is getting the fire going so we can have a bath.

“13Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”  Galatians 3:13,14

November 7.  Decided to wash clothes this morning since the students did not come for drama practice.  They should be here this evening to decorate and then practice.  They had to go help their parents in their gardens and then get food for feeding their families tomorrow and get decorations to put up in the schoolroom.

Fixed our breakfast (hot rice cereal) and had quiet time first.  Then started the laundry - just two loads today.  Daddy helped hang out the clothes.

About 11:00, while I was still working on the report, Daddy looked out and saw rain clouds.  He thought that rain might be coming soon so he went out to see if some of the clothes were dry and get them brought in.  He had no sooner gotten out there when I heard rain start falling on the roof so I hurried off to help him.  All but about a dozen items were dry for which we were thankful.

It rained for a few hours, and then the sun came out for a while this afternoon.  This afternoon, I swept our bedroom and the office and kitchen areas.  Then I finally got the income report up to date.  Just had a few minutes left after that until time to get supper so started putting some ideas together for next year’s drama.  If we are going to do something like that next year, we will have to start earlier.  Am working on some ideas for a musical drama on the birth of Christ.

“6Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.  7Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.  8And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.  9So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.”  Galatians 3:6-9

November 8.  The students came yesterday evening with their “decorations” (leaves and trees).  After they got those put up, we practiced the play one more time.  I had wanted to take some pictures last night, but Esau didn’t show up.  Daddy took his place as king when they practiced the play.

Praise the Lord for His help today!  The Lord gave us a dry day for the school closing.  The young people were up early to start cooking the food.  I was glad for some restful time after breakfast before the program started.  I went out for a little stretch in the sunshine and took a few pictures. Used time after that to get an update written for this month.

Then I took about a half hour nap in the recliner.  Had a hard time getting to sleep last night as a moth seemed to be trapped somewhere on the other side of the wall and kept fluttering around, probably trying to escape.  Then in the middle of the night, sleep was interrupted when somebody’s phone alarm went off.  Daddy had to get up and turn it off.  Then it went off again early this morning - about 5:15.  So I was thankful for that little nap this morning.

The families had been invited to come at 9:30.  That way we could try to get started by 10:00.  Somewhere between 9:30 and 10:00, the students came in and got their costumes on.  Then I took some pictures before we let anyone else in.  Mike looked after the door for us, gave the flutes to the children to blow on signal, and showed the people where to sit.  I think it was about 10:15 when the program started.  I took more pictures during the program too, but it was hard to take a lot of pictures and direct the drama at the same time.

I welcomed the families, and Eric opened in prayer.  Between acts, while the students were changing clothes and scenery, I taught the families three new songs - action songs, two of them in Pidgin and one in English (“Wide, Wide as the Ocean”).  Everybody seemed to enjoy learning the new songs.

When the drama was finished, Daddy gave some remarks to help the families think about what they had seen and heard.  Then I took some time to thank the parents for the privilege of teaching their children and to thank the students for all their hard work.  We sang again, and then Sunny gave a little thank-you speech to the parents on behalf of all the students.  After that, I gave opportunity for any of the fathers to say something.  Tomas expressed his thanks and asked some questions about the future education of their children.

Amos prayed and thanked the Lord for the food, and people went out to eat.  I met briefly with the fathers to give them a list of the book fees for the next year of school.

Daddy and I had our dinner and nap.  When we got up, I started putting away all the props and costumes.  The students want to do the drama again for other church folks and for neighbours.

The weather was quite warm and humid this afternoon so I had an Emergen-C drink after finishing the clean-up work.    Then I got the pictures I took today transferred to the computer.

I was working away here at writing in my journal before supper and suddenly realized that my biscuits were all gone.  So I threw together a small batch of biscuits; and a little after 5:30, they were ready to eat.  Just finished the dishes.  Now it is almost 7:00 and time for people to come for Bible school.

“10For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.  11But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.”  Galatians 3:10,11

Happy Birthday, Esau!
Picture
The "golden" image Mom and the students made from cardboard

November 5.  A little after 7:00 p.m.  Raining.  It has been a busy day, but a fun day.

It was warm when we woke up this morning so Daddy did not start the fire going.  The fog hung around for a while; but before too long, the sun was shining.  The Lord gave us a very warm, nice morning.

MAF came in several times today and shuttled coffee to Aiyura.  They told the people they would not be shuttling any more coffee unless they fixed up the airstrip and finished cutting the grass.

The first part of my morning, after breakfast and quiet time, was spent getting things set up for fun day with the students.  I put the container of little treats out with slips of paper for them to write their names on and a number guessing how many items in the container.  There were little colored papers to hide so each one could find all the little slips of his color.  I needed to figure out where each of the relays would start and end.  Also had to blow up an inflatable globe for the geography game and get a tape ready to play for the Music-Stop-Squat game.  Noodles needed to be cooked too.

The students came at 9:00.  Well, actually, some of them were here before that, but I had told them that I would open the door at 9:00.  However, the plane came at 9:00 too, and some of them had to go help their dads with their coffee so it was around 9:15 when we actually started.  Esau won the contents of the container.  Phinehas won the most games and got to choose the first prize at the end of the morning.  Each one got a prize, starting with the one who got the most points during the morning down to the one who got the least.  We played some team games and some individual games.  They all seemed to enjoy table top football the most.  Steve is really good at geography.  He remembered most of his geography facts and won that game.

A little after 12:00, we got things ready to eat.  Since we were celebrating Esau’s birthday too, which will be next month during the school holidays, we let him serve the food.  First Phinehas prayed and we sang Happy Birthday to Esau.  For their “lunch”, they had sweet potato noodles with onions and tuna.  It was something new, and some of them didn’t care for them.  The texture of those noodles is really different, and the noodles turn into gel when they cool so it was hard to reheat them, but finally managed to get the gel form chopped up enough for it to heat through.  They also had banana muffins, peanuts, juice, and a lolly.

While the students were eating, I heated up our dinner.  Also put eggs on to boil to use for sandwiches this evening. Then I gave them each a gift bag with their report cards, a book, a picture, and a balloon.  Esau’s bag had a few extra things in it since it was his birthday bag as well.  Took pictures of Esau and also of the group before they went home.  Then Daddy and I ate our lunch and had a nap.  I had a looooong nap today.

After nap, the Lord sent us a big storm - rain and hail and strong winds.  One strange thing was that the storm came from the west, and storms rarely come from that direction.

In the mean time, I got the name tags sewn onto the actors’ shirts for the drama.  Then I cut out the pieces of Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image.  After supper and dishes (there were lots of dishes since I had fed nine hungry students at noon), I got the pieces of the image glued together.  After they dry awhile, I will put tape on them as well to make sure everything holds together (hopefully).

“ Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.”  Galatians 1:16

November 6.  A little after 7:00.  Raining.

Today has been a mostly dry day, and very warm again.  It didn’t start raining until this evening, and it is just raining gently.

David led the singing in lotu this morning, and Matthew took prayer requests and prayed at the end.  Daddy did the teaching today since Amos wasn’t here.  He sent word up yesterday that he was going to the kunai and probably would not be back.  Then Bonita said this morning that he doesn’t plan to come back until Saturday.

After lotu, and after everyone had left, we got everything set up for the drama.  Nailed the “golden image” up on the wall and put a small piece of rope up so we could drape a sheet in front of it.  Covered the chalkboard with a blue sheet and decorated it with a strand of stars.  Tacked down the curtains that cover the changing room, except for the one place where they will go in and out, and set everything else up as we had been doing.  Today they had dress rehearsal.  We went through the drama twice, and the second time seemed to go much smoother.  We only have one more chance to practice - tomorrow evening.

Tomorrow morning, most of them need to go to the kunai to help their parents.  Then they will get food for Friday morning and decorations for the schoolroom.  Tomorrow evening, they will come and decorate, and we will go through the drama at least once more.  Would like to do twice, but don’t know how much time there will be.

It was a little after noon when they all left.  Bonita went and got the last piece of meat for us from the haus sik freezer.  We had our lunch; and after she came back with the meat, we had our nap.

This afternoon, I got my very brief speech written for Friday morning.  Then I got oatmeal cookies mixed up for Daddy and started supper.   We still had just enough leftover veggies for tonight so I only had to cook the spaghetti and make the sauce.  We ate first.  Then I cleaned up the supper table and put away the food; and then I got the cookies onto the cookie sheets and into the oven.  While the cookies were baking, I washed the dishes - LOTS of them tonight.

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”  Galatians 2:20

Strength and Weakness

November 3.  Some sunshine this morning, but the rains started early, before noon.  This morning after breakfast, I started getting other things together for Funday on Tuesday.  Also started making name tags to put on the actors’ shirts for the drama.  People were late coming up from the gardens and thus were late for church.  It was about 10:20 when lotu started.

It was a good day with God’s people.  In the two meetings today, Daddy went over with the church the qualifications for elders.  He handed out a printed list of the qualifications for the church members to take home and talk over and pray about.  At the end of the second meeting, he presented Matthew and David to the church to consider for ordination as pastors.  The people seemed quite excited about the possibility of soon having their own pastors.  Next week, they will vote on the two men.

Between meetings, Matthew talked with the church about what the Lord had taught him concerning strength and weakness.  The Lord opened his eyes to see that when the other people slander and reproach us, it makes us stronger.  If we talk about them, that makes us weaker.  Praise the Lord for making that plain to him!

This afternoon, I went over the names on the name tags with markers and finished getting things together for games.  This evening, there were a couple things to print.  Then I made a birthday card for Mrs. H…. and tried to send that off with an e-mail to Christy and Connie so they could print it out and take it to her.  However, there was a too-big e-mail trying to come in, and it was messing things up.  Daddy did manage to get into web mail and put it in the trash, but that takes quite a while and uses up quite a bit of the time on our modem.  After that, the other e-mail came in that was behind it.  However, our outgoing mail wouldn’t go.  They kept telling us that the sending was complete.  So guess we’ll have to try again later.

“Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father….”  Galatians 1:4

November 4.  8:00 p.m.  It has been a busy day.  No rain today.  We are thankful for a little break from the wet weather.

This morning after breakfast, I remembered that I hadn’t turned the page over that I had printed out with the list of games (there were more games on the back) so I still had a few things to get ready for games tomorrow.  Worked on that until time for school.  All the students were here early today because they had carried coffee up to the airstrip for different people.  The twin otter was scheduled to come today to do coffee shuttles.  We learned, however, that the pilot had had a bicycle accident and injured his leg so he could not fly today.  (Found out later that it was his arm he injured, not his leg.)

We finished up the study of applications from Daniel this morning.  Then we talked about several other things related to this week’s events.  Took a little break and then practiced the drama a couple times.  We all made quite a few mistakes the first time - yes, myself included.  I guess we had had too long a weekend or something.  The second time went much smoother.  Sosthenes came down with a headache, and it got worse as the morning wore on.  He left right away as soon as practice was over.  The others stayed and helped clean up today before leaving.

Sosthenes’s sisters came this evening to get some medicine for him.  He had thrown up nine times this afternoon, they said.  The only thing we had to give him was activated charcoal so we sent some of that up with instructions on how to use it.  Phinehas and Dallas helped explain to the girls, and I wrote it down as well.  So hopefully they got it straight.

Phinehas and Dallas are here this evening painting the statue representation of Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image.  I just finished getting it drawn a few minutes ago.  They started painting at the top while I finished drawing the bottom.

We finished up our drama practice around noon today.  Had sandwiches for lunch.  Desi had brought an avocado this morning, and it was just the right ripeness to use with my sandwiches.

After nap, I started getting things ready for the party refreshments tomorrow and putting ingredients together for banana bread.  Also washed the wee bundle of greens that a girl brought this morning and set them aside to drain off.   Then I got out the cardboard boxes we had flattened before and didn’t need for the fire, and started cutting the flaps off those so I could join them together to make the statue - needed about 100 inches in length.  Later I cut up the greens with some onion so they would be ready to cook.  Finished mixing up the banana bread and put that in muffin tins to be baked.  Got that into the oven and started the greens cooking.  Started measuring and getting ready to draw while veggies were cooking and leftover rice was warming up.  After dishes were done, I went back to work drawing the statue.  The statue is the height of the wall where it will be placed for the drama, and we will nail it to the wall when it is ready.

The Blessing of Hearing Them Sing

October 24.  A little bit after 8:00.  Bible school students and youth are here for the teaching on marriage.  The Lord gave us a nice warm and sunny morning again.  The rains came earlier today - while we were eating our dinner.  The rain was deafening as it pounded on the metal roof during nap time.  We are thankful that it is not raining this evening.  Yesterday evening, Daddy could not teach Bible school because it was raining too hard.

This morning after breakfast and quiet time, I tried to finish sewing the seat on the king’s throne.  Didn’t quite get it done before school, but was able to finish it during recess so we could use it for drama practice today.

Phinehas’s question today after our Bible lesson was “What about people that say, Because God forgives sin, we can keep on sinning and then confessing, and God will forgive us”?  I was happy to be able to give the class some Scriptures to show the error of that kind of thinking.

Today the students had their last speed drill for the year and did the last lesson in their math book.  Then we had a “hurray!” time.  After that, we had drama practice and went through Act 1 twice.

When the house started cooling off at lunch time, Daddy got the fire going again.  There were still hot coals in the firebox so he was able to start it up pretty easily.  At nap time, I went into a sound sleep.  After nap, I washed my hair so was thankful for the warmth of the fire to help it dry.  Then I recorded today's grades and averaged up all the math grades for the term.  Got things ready for school tomorrow and then fixed supper.

After doing dishes, I sorted and washed the greens that Tonka brought and also a few onions to go with them.  Then I printed out the math tests which the students will be taking next week.  After that I got the greens and onions into the pressure cooker and put them on to cook.

“Providing for honest things, not only in the sight of the Lord, but also in the sight of men.”  II Corinthians 8:21

October 25.  7:30 p.m.  Just finished doing laundry and hanging up the shirts, blouses, and a few other things.

It was raining when Daddy finished Bible school last night so everyone hung around for a while.  When the rain slowed down, the adults went home.  The young people, however, stayed around until lights out and sang hymns and choruses.  Phinehas had brought his guitar with him.  We had the blessing of hearing them sing for an hour or so.

There was more rain during the night so the world was pretty wet this morning.  The Lord sent us sunshine, however, this morning.  Then the rains came again in the afternoon, but not heavy rains today thus far.

I was awake a little after 5:30 this morning so went ahead and got up.

After breakfast and Bible reading, I made stands for the “worshippers” that Phinehas had painted and also spent time praying.

The students had their second and final test in English today.  I changed order of classes and had them do the test right after recess.  Then, after a short break, we reviewed math, including playing a couple games.

Finished up the rest of the spaghetti for dinner and with it we had some of the greens I had cooked last night.  Was quite tired at nap time since I had gotten up early this morning so slept until almost 3:00.  Then I cut up the two popos that were well over-ripe and needed to be cooked.  Made a popo crisp which would be our supper this evening.

After that, I recorded today’s grades, cut around the top of another fire, and started planning next year’s school schedule.  Then we had our supper

After supper, I sorted out the clothes to be washed, did the dishes, and then did the laundry.

The Bible school students and a few others are here for Bible school this evening.  Quite a few people are down at the river.  It is peanut planting time again.

“But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.”  II Corinthians 9:6

October 26.  No rain in the night, but it did not get sunny today.  After I got up and dressed this morning, Daddy took the clothes basket out for me, and I hung up the clothes.  But the sun didn’t shine, and the rains came around mid-morning.  I was thankful that the things I needed were already dry by then - fitted sheet and pillow cases.  It didn’t rain hard in the morning so we left the rest of the things out until after lunch.  That gave them time to dry a bit more.  Then we brought them in.  Didn’t hang them up in the house until after nap though.  Was too tired to do it before that.

After hanging out the clothes, I had my breakfast and then went to lotu.  Not too many here today as a lot of people are down at the river.  Mike continued his teaching on the love of Christ in our lives, and our serving Christ because we love Him.  Afterward Phinehas and Dallas did the sweeping.  Some of the men did some clean-up outside, and Daniel and Matthew worked on the roof to try to repair the leaks in the northwest corner of the meeting room.  When they got all done, the rain still came in - at a different spot.  So they still need to figure out what to do to repair the leaks.

I got another fire cut and then spent time figuring out grade averages for the year so I will know what awards to give the students.  Finished up the grade averaging this afternoon.

At 10:00, we called Christy and Connie and enjoyed about a half hour chat with them.  I cut fire while we were talking.  We said good-bye when we heard the rain start falling.  Went out and brought in the dry clothes.  Then I made the bed.  Finished the first term schedule for the next school year.  Also figured out the cost per student of next year’s school books and prepared a list for each father so they will know how much they’ll have to pay.

For lunch we had leftover popo crisp.  After nap, I worked more on grade averaging and then hung up the clothes that were still somewhat wet.  Soup sounded like a good supper for a rainy day so I washed the pumpkin and Daddy cut it up for me.  Cooked that with the rest of the spring onions.  Added the rest of the corn that was in the fridge and also some brown rice pasta, plus some seasonings.

Matthew came to talk to Daddy this afternoon.  After the victories, Satan is trying to discourage him.

Hardly any dishes this evening.  After doing dishes, I cleaned the toilet and swept the bathroom and kitchen floors.

We don’t get to have a tub bath this evening because there isn’t enough clean water.  All the rain has kept the water somewhat muddied.  So will just have a stand-up bath.

“ Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”  II Corinthians 9:7

When I Was Afraid

October 23.  The Lord gave us a lovely sunny morning, and the rains started this afternoon.  It is raining now - 6:45 p.m.  Phinehas is here practicing keyboard.  Amos has already arrived for Bible school.

Woke up a little before 6:00 this morning.  Had leftover pancakes for my breakfast.  After quiet time, until time for lotu to start, I started sewing the seat cover on the king’s throne.  Amos continued teaching from Acts chapter 2, Peter’s message to the Jews at Jerusalem.  He talked mainly about David’s prophecy of Christ’s death and resurrection.

In phonics class today, the students had to write a story about a time when they were afraid.  I told them a little story first about how I was afraid of the dark when I was a little girl.  Then they each wrote their own story.  It was their first time to write a story, and they did pretty well, considering that we have not studied a lot of grammar yet and English is their third language.

They had their first exam in English today - on nouns and verbs, and most of them did well.  Friday they will have another one.

This afternoon, by the time I finished grading, recording grades, and getting things ready for school tomorrow, it was time to make my biscuits for supper.

A good number of people cut grass on the airstrip today, mostly from Ahnyauntapeq.  There is about half the airstrip left to be cut.

October 22.  Cooler last night, but not too cold.  Damp this morning, however, after the rain so Daddy got up and got the fire going.  The Lord gave us another lovely morning, and thunder storms again this afternoon.

After breakfast and quiet time this morning, I gathered more things together that we would be needing to use after classes when we worked on props.  Then it was off to school.

Everyone said their Bible verse this morning, except for Sunny who didn’t come in until after we had finished that part of Bible class.  Then we reviewed yesterday’s lesson on Daniel, Hananiah, Asariah, and Mishael, and what their lives may have been like so that they stood strong for the Lord.  After that, we started the next lesson, on how we can stand strong for the Lord, talking first about what advantages we have that those four young men did not have, and then starting on what is needed in our lives to help us be strong and remain strong in the Lord.  We only covered the first point under that, which was “hearing the Word of God.”  Then I give the students time to ask questions.  Yesterday Esau had asked, “If our old man draws us into sin, will God hear our prayers.”  And today Phinehas asked what a person should do if he tries to help a Christian friend who has sinned but that friend becomes angry.  It is good that they are thinking and wanting to know Bible answers to their questions.

After math class, we worked for about an hour on the props and costumes.  Phinehas and Steve painted the men that Phinehas had drawn last time (see photo above).  Sunny and Bonita worked on sewing - hemming up a tunic, made from a nightgown I had cut off; and stitching some beadwork on a purple robe for the king.  The rest of the students drew flames on the fires, and Bethuel started cutting the flames at the top.  While they were working, I finished grading today’s work so that was all done before lunch time.  Also took some pictures of them working.

Today, I also worked on covering the king’s throne.  I still need to stitch down the covering for the seat and back of the chair.  Daddy had screwed the back on yesterday.

Made spaghetti for supper and had leftover carrots.  It was a little bit late before we ate because we forgot to send someone down to get meat.  Finally around 4:30, I saw Misaina outside so asked her if she would go get some meat for us from the haus sik freezer.  She was happy to do that and get a lollipop for a treat.

Daddy counted 14 Waisara men who cut grass on the airstrip today.  They still have more coffee to go out so did part of the work of cutting grass.

“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.”  II Corinthians 8:9
