January 25. Another mostly cloudy day, and cool too. Daddy let the fire go out late morning, but started it up again after dinner. We saw a few bursts of sunshine late this afternoon, but that did not last long. Had a little bit of rain this evening. Everyone was about ten minutes late this morning for school, but most of them have been going down to the river after school to be with their parents. It takes them a while to get back up here in the morning, and this morning was quite dark and foggy so they probably did not start out as early. We did a short music lesson in Bible class, and then I played a couple songs for them to sing. They love to sing “Taim Yumi Kamap Long Heven,” (When We All Get to Heaven) and they sing it with all their might. I thought my eardrums would burst with them all standing around behind me singing while I was playing. I’m glad they like to sing though. We also sang “Jisas I Gutpela.” (Jesus is Good) I couldn’t sing today; could barely even talk. My throat is very, very sore, and my ears have been hurting too. I tried big doses of all the supplements we have, but I was only getting worse. So I finally started on amoxicillin last night. By the end of school today, I could hardly talk at all. I am thankful for the weekend ahead to get a little extra rest and to rest my voice as well. Sorry to say, the water tap still leaked when Daddy turned the water back on today. So once again he had to do it all over. And once again the water is off for another 24 hours. Daddy was still working on the pipes when I went for my nap. I didn’t sleep as long as I would have liked because I woke up with a coughing spell and couldn’t get that settled down. So I got up and got to work finishing up the correcting of today’s papers. After that, it was time to start supper - potatoes to wash and peel and cut up for mashed potatoes; carrots to peel, wash, and cut up. Onions and chicken to cut up and cook together in the pressure cooker. And then some butter biscuits to make for myself to put the chicken gravy on when everything was done and we were ready to eat. There were lots of dishes this evening. Now it is time to go get a bath. “9And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. 10He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much. 11If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 12And if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own?” Luke 16:9-12 January 26. It has been a hot and sweaty day. There was nobody around for lotu this morning. Most everyone is/was still down at the river. So I did the laundry early. I was glad to get it hung out before the sun got too hot. There were blue patches when I hung the clothes out, but it was mostly overcast. Soon after I came inside the sun came out, and it looked like it would be a nice day. We put the peanuts out in the sun to dry, and then the second layer of fog came up and overshadowed everything. Daddy was afraid it might rain, but by mid-morning, the Lord had taken the clouds away and given us a sunshiny day. When I got up from nap this afternoon, there was lots and lots of blue sky. But now there are lots of clouds and the rain is falling. After doing laundry, I sat down for a while and worked on announcements for tomorrow and notes for tomorrow’s business meeting. Still have to finish the notes. Then I worked on math lessons for this coming week until it was time to talk to Christy and Connie. That was the best part of the day. Then I sorted and washed greens before finishing the math lesson plans. Cooked the greens; warmed up mashed taters (for Daddy), butter biscuits (for me), and chicken gravy to go on top of the taters and biscuits. After we had eaten, we went out and brought the clothes in, hung up our shirts, blouses, and dresses, and made the bed. I had forgotten all about making the bed after I took sheets off to be washed this morning. We had a nice long nap. Then this afternoon, I went out and picked leaves (so I can show the school students how to do their science project), washed my hair, and got English and science plans done for the coming week. Daddy turned the water back on around 3:15. It still has a small leak so we will just put something under it for now to catch the drips. I am thankful to have the running water again. About 4:15, I went to the kitchen and started baking. Made some cinnamon sugar cookie bars for Daddy and some banana raisin rice muffins for myself (to take the place of pancakes for breakfast in the morning since there isn’t any fruit to make fruit syrup with for pancakes). Fixed pizza sandwiches for our supper. Did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen. Wiped off the bathtub and sprayed the inside with disinfectant. Daddy wiped it out for me. Now it is time to sit down and relax before bath. “And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.” Luke 16:15 Janaury 23. It was a very hot, stuffy day again, and mostly cloudy. I have a bad sore throat and earache so didn’t sleep well last night. Slept a fairly long nap again today. We started out with just six in lotu this morning - Lew and I, David’s mother and Maro’s mother, Phinehas and Steve. Others straggled in later until there were 16 all together, a pretty good group since most everyone is down at the river. They were all youth and elderly, except for Daniel. Daddy taught on Bible pictures of the church, e.g. a house, a garden, a body. Daniel stayed afterward and worked. Changed the hinges on the back gate and put a hook latch on the gate. Then he took the old shut-off valve off the pipe that goes to the outside faucet because it didn’t work, and he put the new one on that Daddy bought. So the water has to be off for 24 hours until the glue dries. Daddy filled the bathtub with clean water so we can dip out for flushing the toilet, washing hands, etc. Daniel also went up on the roof to nail down the loose piece of roofing iron above the kitchen and to see if there were a dead rat on the veranda roof. We have been smelling the horrible odor every time we open the back door. He didn’t find the rat on top of the veranda, but did find it under the pile of wood that is under the veranda. I am thankful to be rid of that. Then Daddy and Daniel put shelf brackets up in Connie’s room. Now Daddy has to find or cut the right size pieces of plywood for the shelves. We started school early, shortly after lotu ended. So I thought we would finish early today. Well, we did finish early, but we never did have English class. We went a little longer in phonics class so they could finish their phonics lesson and do the worksheet too. About half way into math class, Daddy called for a couple boys to help catch a live rat that Daniel found down by the dead one. Sosthenes and Bethuel went out and tried to get the rat, but it kept escaping to other areas under the house. One by one, the other boys went out to help. By the time they finally cornered and killed the rat, it was 11:40. They still had to finish up their math. So we didn’t have time for English today. But I think they had fun “rat hunting”. After everyone left, I warmed up dinner. We gave a plate of greens and a cup of peanuts to Daniel too. He was saying that the man… who started those other rumors about NTM leaving the country is now telling people that by June of this year, PNG will have a new money system and people won’t be able to buy anything unless they have the 666 mark. This man also says that this is the last government PNG will have. Where is he coming up with all these stories? And people are believing him. It is not just Daddy and I who are feeling hot these days. Other people too are saying that they don’t remember it ever being so hot here. They said it is hotter down at the river than they ever remember it being. They get in the water and cool off; and five minutes later, they are hot again. Just a very wee taste of that which is to come during the tribulation. I certainly am thankful we won’t be here. After nap, I finished grading papers and recording grades. Then I got most everything ready for tomorrow before getting supper on the table. “I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance…. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” Luke 15:7,10 January 24. It has been another mostly cloudy day, but not as humid as the previous days. We had a pretty hard rain early this evening. Daddy turned the water back on at 10:30 this morning, but the water leaked quite a bit around the new tap he had put in. So he had to do it all over again. That means the water is off for another 24 hours. The students brought pretty colored leaves to science class today, and we put them between pieces of greaseless paper (known in the US as waxed paper) with heavy books on top. Next Tuesday, they will glue the leaves on colored paper and make pictures or designs. It was late when we finished science class today; and after dinner, I had keyboard class so it was after 2:30 before we went for a nap. After nap, I cut up the little popo somebody brought the other day. Daddy had some to eat, and I had half an apple. I will use my share of the popo in the morning - cook it up to put on the rest of my pancakes. Had just about enough time to finish correcting papers and recording grades before getting supper. This evening, I played keyboard a while after doing dishes. My throat and ears have been very sore; and this afternoon, I started losing my voice. “ It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.” Luke 15:32 January 21. The Lord sent rain during the night, but today has been a dry-season like day with lots of sunshine and strong gusty winds.
The day started with leftover pancakes for breakfast, quiet time, walking, putting away the baby items Daddy had gotten in town and some that had come in the box from Christy and Connie, and roasting and putting out peanuts for the school students to eat. Not that they aren’t getting enough peanuts at home. They are probably getting plenty. But we have so many now with all that we received in the offering yesterday even though a lot of those were given away to people, like the elderly, who don’t have much. Some of the elderly can’t eat them though because they don’t have teeth. Most of the students were here early this morning. However, we started school a few minutes late because they were busy eating their peanuts. The worksheets the students have been doing in phonics class recently are geared to helping them learn how to follow instructions. After school today, five of the students stayed and worked. Sunny and Bonita sorted out plastic bags and then sorted, washed, and cut up greens to be cooked for our dinner this evening. Then they joined Phinehas, Steve, and Bethuel who were busy shelling peanuts. They worked for three hours all together, and there was a huge baking pan full of red peanuts, and not quite as large a pan full of white peanuts. Some of the peanuts went into their mouths as they were working, especially Bethuel’s. He does like to eat. Whenever he sees food coming, his eyes light up. :-) They were saying that the peanuts on the Marivo side produced even more than the ones on the Owena side. Some of the Marivo people counted as many as 40 peanuts on one stem. While they were working, we had our lunch. Then I graded papers, recorded grades, and got things ready for school tomorrow. Daddy went for a walk and then had a nap. It was after 3:30 before I went down for nap. Slept about 50 minutes. Then I washed my hair, and after that it was time to start supper. All I had to do was light the burner to cook the greens and then warm up the rest of the rice and chicken. “33Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. 34For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Luke 12:33,34 January 22. No rain last night or today, but it is trying to rain this evening. Just a drop or two now and then so far. It was, however, quite warm and humid today. Even though it wasn’t sunny this afternoon, the temperature outside was in the mid-80’s. Both of us were sweating and dragging around for a while. It is cooling down a little this evening. Daddy turned on the generator for about a half hour before school this morning, and I printed out the next Bible and music lessons for school. Some of the kids are having a hard time understanding how to follow instructions in school. We are doing a number of exercises to try to get them to realize the importance of following instructions. We ended science class a little early today, and I showed the students all the things that Lonnie sent for them. I told them when they finish a workbook or something, they can have a day to do art. In a couple weeks, we should finish unit two in phonics so that will probably be a good time to give them a break. I also gave them each a pen from the sets of pens that she sent. We had egg salad sandwiches for lunch. We are thankful for all the eggs the Lord has been sending us. For now, I can be more generous with the amount of egg salad I put on my bread. I took a rather long nap this afternoon. I first woke up about a half hour after we lay down. But I said to myself, I’ll just lie here a little while longer, and if I don’t go back to sleep, I’ll get up. Well, I did go back to sleep and didn’t wake up again for another 45 minutes. I was grateful for that extra rest time this afternoon. The rest of the afternoon was spent grading papers, recording grades, and fixing supper - got the water on to heat for spaghetti; peeled and cut up carrots and put them on to cook; made spaghetti sauce. It is very quiet around this evening. A lot more people are gone down to the river now. Nobody has even brought mobiles to be charged this evening. “12Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee. 13But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind: 14And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.” Luke 14:12-14 January 19. Last night before bed, I finished hemming the other curtain to go up in Connie’s room. Got the curtains put up just before lights out.
The Lord gave us sunshine almost all day today and no rain. The first thing I did when I got up this morning was sort out the clothes so they would be ready to wash. Then I got my breakfast and had quiet time. About a dozen people came for lotu - women, teens, and children. Wiru and Esau helped start songs since there was no song leader. All the men and their families have been down at the river since Wednesday afternoon harvesting their peanuts. We haven’t heard them come back up here yet. It was such a nice day, they probably decided to spend the day down there. It has been a very hot day though. I could feel the humidity when I hung out clothes. Even Daddy was saying how hot it was today, especially this afternoon. We feel like we are on the coast and not in the highlands. We kidded about leaving here and moving to the highlands. After lotu, Daddy started the generator, and I started the laundry. While the clothes were washing, I washed the dishes. Hadn’t done them last night because I was too tired. It was a somewhat stressful week with Daddy being gone. He was gone absolutely too long. I am thankful that he is home again. Esau and Wiru stayed and cut firewood after lotu. We are thankful to have all the wood boxes filled up again. After hanging out the clothes, I sat down and refreshed myself with an Emergen-C drink. Then I went through the box of stuff that Lonnie had sent. I know the school students will enjoy all the art supplies. That done, I started on journal notes for Christy and Connie before putting rice on to cook for dinner, and cutting up onion which I browned and put to cook with the chicken in the pressure cooker. When we had eaten, we got the clothes in and then had our nap. This afternoon, I got math lessons planned for this coming week, and this evening the English and science lessons. “Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?” Luke 12:24 January 20. It was very warm last night and early this morning too. I was already hot and sweaty by 9:00. The Lord gave us a couple hours of sunshine today but mostly overcast skies. Rain threatened throughout the afternoon, but it is just starting to rain lightly now. Got Daddy’s breakfast of pancakes made with a couple eggs. Then I made rice pancakes for myself. Ate and had quiet time. Walked and prayed. Washed the chalkboard and wiped off the pulpit and shelves in the meeting room. Daddy had done sweeping yesterday. Covered the books and locked the cupboard. Practiced the song that the school choir would be singing this morning. Then Daddy turned on the generator for a half hour, and I did some more photo copying and prepared a couple pages to be printed out for math class. People came early for lotu. Many of them had come back to the village after dark last night. Some of them were going to go back down this afternoon, and some of them tomorrow. Esau came early this morning to let me know that he had had a long talk with his father last night and realized that he had truly trusted Christ before, but thought that he hadn’t because he had allowed sin to come in and bring doubts about his salvation. I had wondered if he just needed assurance of salvation, but he couldn’t seem to understand what I was getting at. I was thankful the Lord gave his father wisdom in talking with him, and he seemed more sure of himself this morning than he had the other days. He was not in class the other day when I shared my testimony, or maybe that would have helped him. I did share my testimony with him this morning after he let me know that he had found assurance of salvation. There were a number of visitors here again today, including a couple women from the Care team. Lots of people brought peanuts for the offering. Their peanut gardens produced abundantly this year. It was already 11:15 before Daddy started preaching. He covered the first eight verses of I Corinthians 5 in the first meeting and the rest of the chapter in the second meeting. It was 12:15 when he finished preaching. We had our dinner. The people were outside discussing various matters so it was about 1:45 before the second meeting started and 2:45 when we finished. It was after 3:00 when I went down for nap. Daddy was still in the meeting room talking with some of the men. After nap, I made sure all the materials were together for school tomorrow. Then I got supper and did dishes. “29And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. 30For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. 31But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Luke 12:29-31 |
