Laundry and Window Washing

December 26.  A hot, sweaty day.  Bonita didn’t come to work today because she went with the youth group to dig a garden for Mike.  She did come and do dishes this evening.  It started raining just before 7:00 this evening, and only four people showed up for Bible school.  Since nobody else showed up, there was no Bible school.

After breakfast and quiet time this morning, Daddy and I did the laundry, and I hung out the clothes.  There actually weren’t many clothes to wash today, but I washed quite a few curtains.

While the clothes were washing, I washed our bedroom windows.  After I finished hanging out the clothes, I washed windows in the laundry room and bathroom.  Then I relaxed in the recliner a while and crocheted.  When I was cleaning the top of the closet yesterday, I found four nice quilted place mats.  I thought maybe if I join them together I can make them into a baby blanket.  So I started crocheting around the place mats; and this afternoon, I started joining the pieces together.  Just have one more piece to join.

After that, I worked on the PNG history/geography course until almost lunch time.  Worked on it more this afternoon and this evening.  Just one more unit to finish and check over.

Also did more cleaning out of things on our bedroom shelves.  Maybe I’ll get finished with that tomorrow.

“43But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: 44And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.  45For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”  Mark 10:43-45

December 27.  7:45 p.m.  Bonita just finished doing dishes about fifteen minutes ago.  Then we figured up her hours and her pay for the week.

It has been an overcast day, not too hot, but not too cool either.

There were a lot of people here for lotu this morning.  Mike’s teaching this morning was geared for the children - “Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

After lotu, Bonita came in and worked for a while.  The men worked on the church property – cutting grass, making repairs where needed, and making a roof over the front steps.  Then the youth came in to practice music so Bonita went and practiced with them.  Then she came back and finished working.

Daddy got e-mails in, and I tried to read e-mails and print more songbooks that had been ordered.  Was interrupted quite a few times by ladies who wanted to buy yarn or by people who wanted to order songbooks.  I did get six copies of songbooks printed before Daddy turned off the generator, except for the covers.  This evening I did six more copies plus the covers.

We sent the youth out about 10:45 so we could call Christy and Connie.  Enjoyed a nice chat with them.  After that, I did more cleaning out of our bedroom shelves.  Didn’t get as much of it done today as I had hoped, but maybe Monday.

When I got up from nap this afternoon, I sat in the recliner and crocheted.  Added the last placemat to the three I had already joined together.  Then started crocheting a border to go all the way around.  Got half way around and then went and worked on the history/geography lessons for a while.  About 4:30, I started making lemon sugar cookies.  After I got those in the oven, I got supper on the table.

“…. Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole….”  Mark 10:52

The Need for Prayer

December 24.  Cloudy, cool, and drizzly all day today.

Amos taught this morning from Acts 12:12-17, Peter’s arrival at the home of Mary where the believers were praying for him.  He emphasized how God answers prayer, and afterward Matthew spent a little more time talking about the need for prayer.  There was a good group here this morning, and there are many needs for prayer right now.  Apekio shared last night her burden for their marriage.

After the meeting, people stayed around and talked for quite a while.  Philemon told more stories about his life and work in Kudjip.

After everyone left, Daddy turned on the generator, and Bonita came to work.  I printed out seven song books that were ordered this morning.  Philemon had ordered first and paid so I printed his out first and stapled it together; and since he was still standing around outside, Daddy called him in to get it.  When the others saw his song book, six more put in their orders, but not all of them have paid yet.  Gibson paid for his so when he came back later to get his phone that had been charged, we gave him his copy.

Bonita’s jobs this morning were folding clothes, sorting plastic bags, sweeping the floor, and collating the song books.

After Bonita left, I had a snack and did some more cleaning out of things in our bedroom closet.  Mattthew came by to talk with Daddy about the pastors and deacons.

Then Daddy and I went for a short walk.  As we started out on our walk, we met an older couple coming up from Ahnyauntapeq going up to Yerox for a court for Senka.

This afternoon, I got the income report up to date and then worked more on the bedroom closet.

“And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.”  Mark 10:27

December 25.  Not much sun again today, but no rain until this evening.

Bonita did not come to work today.  She wanted to take the day off, and that was fine.  I gave her that option.

I cleaned out the top shelf of the closet above the clothes so I could put the curtains back up.  Also did some more cleaning out on the other shelves.  Finished up the soul-winning lesson I had been working on and printed out a copy for Daddy to proofread.  Then I discovered that I had never printed out the one before that so printed out that one this evening as he will need that one first.

After morning snack, we went for a walk - quite a bit longer walk than usual.  This time we went around the “block” - up the airstrip, across to Tomas’s house, and down by Matthew’s house to our house.  We were out about 45 minutes.  Talked to a number of people along the way.

After we got back, I rested at the computer, working on the PNG history/geography course.  Then I made a meat pie for our dinner.

This afternoon, I washed my hair and worked more on the history/geography course.  This evening, I finished proofreading through unit three.  Two more units to go.  Also printed a couple more song books - one for Wilson and one for Bonita.  The youth were here practicing music this evening to sing during the special meetings next week.

“29And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, 30But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.”  Mark 10:29,30

December 22.  A nice sunny morning, and a very hot, sweaty day until the clouds and rain came late this afternoon.

After breakfast and quiet time this morning, I started making tortillas.  Then Bonita came in so I showed her how to do the tortillas, and she soon was busy rolling out the little balls of dough.  I started cooking them on the wood stove while she was still rolling them.  When she finished rolling those out, she washed the doors of the old small cupboard in the schoolroom and then washed the floor in the school area.  Then she swept the office, kitchen, and bathroom and cleaned off the legs of Daddy’s office chair.

I took down the closet curtains in our bedroom so I can wash them tomorrow.  Also started sorting out one of the boxes of craft things stored in the closet.  When Daddy turned on the generator, I spent some time working on the PNG history/geography lessons.  Worked on that some more before starting supper this afternoon.

Late in the morning, we started out for a little walk, but the trail was pretty wet in one stretch, and I was afraid of falling.  So I came back, and Daddy continued on for a short walk.  When I got back to the house, I walked around the yard and looked over the garden to see if it needs to be weeded.  It definitely does.  Helen came by as I was out there, and she asked if she could weed.  So tomorrow, I will have her take care of the garden, and Misaina can weed under the house.

Daddy got back right after I came inside.  Then he opened and stirred up the varnish for me so I could put a coat on the new cupboard.  So now the cupboard is shiny blue and yellow.  He cleaned out the brush while I got lunch ready.  Then we ate and had our nap.

After nap, I glued down some big scraps of linoleum over the places where there were big holes in the linoleum in the school area.  Weighted them down until the glue dried.

Erisa came by with a pumpkin and chatted for a while.  She said her second daughter, Aritsendo, got married to Eki about three weeks ago.

The place was busy with people coming and going today.  Several young ladies came to buy yarn.  Dallas came and paid part of his school book costs for the coming year, and Mike came and paid his in full.

A number of young men were practicing rugby at the bottom of the airstrip today, getting ready for the holiday games, and a lot of young ladies went over to Tainaraba today to play basketball.

“41For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.  42And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.”  Mark 9:41,42

December 23.  45th anniversary.  Praise the Lord for His wonderful care and blessings over the years!

Praise the Lord for a sunny day, too, for hanging out the laundry!  It is starting to rain now - about 6:00 p.m.

When we got up this morning, we smelled a horrible smell in the kitchen.  Daddy said it smelled like gas.  The bottled gas couldn’t be running out already!  Yes, it smelled like gas, but a lot stronger than the bottled gas when it starts to run low.  It smelled like the putrid gases given off by decaying flesh.  A dead rat!  We looked under and behind and all around the stove area where the smell was coming from.  Couldn’t find anything.  Figured it must be behind the counter right next to the stove.  No way to get to it.  We were thankful that the morning was warm and we could open the door and windows early to let in fresh air.  Later in the morning, the big horse flies came around the house trying to get inside and find that dead flesh.

Tomas came by today to see about getting some extra wire for their generator and also more fuel.

Bonita came right after Daddy turned on the generator this morning.  I showed her how to do the laundry, and she did most of the work.  She also helped me hang the clothes out.  After that, she prepared greens and carrots for our dinner.  So she had a busy morning.

In between guiding her in doing laundry, I did a bit more sorting out of craft things in our bedroom.  Afterward, Daddy helped me fix up a chalkboard tray in front of the chalkboard.  Then before dinner, I worked on the PNG history/geography course.

This afternoon, I worked more on the course before cutting Daddy’s hair.  Then I made banana cream pudding for our anniversary supper and whipped up the cream to go on top.  It was very rich, and that was all we needed to eat.

“14But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.  15Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.  16And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.”  Mark 10:14-16

Lots of People Interaction

December 20.  Cloudy again today and raining lightly this evening.  The youth just finished practicing songs and have left for home.

This morning Tomas preached in lotu, again using John 16:33 as his text and talking about tribulation.

I had planned to write e-mails this morning after, but never did get to it.  There was lots of people-interaction.  Some of the young ladies wanted to buy yarn.  I am selling yarn for the school.  At first, I was going to put the money back into the school account to start building the account back up.  We used a fair bit buying uniforms for the students.  Instead of putting the money back into the school account, however, I decided I would use the profits to supplement the students’ school books and supplies for this year.  So the money will go back into our own funds to replace what we used to buy their school materials.

Then Matthew wanted to talk to me about making advertisements for the New Year meetings.

In the mean time, Philemon was talking to Daddy.  Daddy asked him if he would like to have our old printer to use at school.  He has a lot of reports he has to write and has to use someone else’s printer to print them out.  He was happy to have the printer; and he and his father came down, and we helped him install it into his computer.  He will need to buy a USB cable and ink for it.  Then he wanted to show us a few pictures of his work and tell us the story of one of them.  This year he has worked in the theatre (operating room) as a scrub nurse, and they let him take pictures.

Before Philemon and Tomas left, Mata came with a bunch of bananas to sell.  And by the time everyone was finally gone, it was already after 10:30.  I hadn’t had much for breakfast and was rather hungry, and thirsty too, so had a snack before I did anything else.  After snack, I painted the blue parts of the new school cupboard.  Yesterday I had painted the door yellow.  Didn’t have enough blue or yellow to do the shelf inside so guess I will do it white, probably on Monday.

This afternoon, Bonita came to prepare veggies for our supper.  I worked on an e-mail for Christy and Connie.  Then I made a pizza and used up the leftover spaghetti.  While the pizza was cooking, I made corrections in the new Bible lesson for Wilson that Daddy was going to teach him this evening.  Got it printed out after supper, but Wilson didn’t come early so didn’t have a lesson.  He came with the youth to practice music.

This evening, Bonita came to wash dishes.  When she finished washing them, she went and practiced with the youth.  Afterward she came and dried them and put them away.

This evening, I also printed out five advertisements for the New Year meetings, and printed three song books - one for Matthew, one for Daddy, and one for Apekio.   Then we had our baths, and then I got the song books collated.  I just need to staple them now.

“23Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.  24And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.”  Mark 9:23,24

December 21.  After the fog and clouds lifted, the Lord gave us a nice, sunny morning today.  This evening it is raining again.  It is just about time for soul-winning class, but don’t know how many will show up in the rain.

After breakfast and quiet time, I finally finished folding the clothes that were washed on Thursday.  Every time I started folding clothes the past couple days, someone would come, and other things needed attention.  Wrote and sent some e-mails after Daddy turned on the generator.  Also recorded all the bank transactions on the check register for October and November.  Was happy for a few minutes to go out and feel the warm sunshine before lotu.

Matthew preached this morning on Galatians 2:16,17 and on verses 18-21 in the afternoon.  A lot of truths in those verses to help strengthen the Christian life.  He had some good cross references to Romans chapter 6 too.

This afternoon, I finished lesson plans for the first week of school, and got the attendance chart and grade charts made for the first term.

Just before and after supper, I spent some time working on the history/geography book and will probably work on it some more after this.

“35And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.  36And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, 37Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.”  Mark 9:35-37

Preparing for the New School Year

December 17.  A hot, sweaty day with a little bit of rain this evening.

Amos preached this morning on Acts 12:6-11, Peter’s miraculous release from prison.  His application was that nothing is too hard for God; He can help us in any situation.

After lotu, Matthew, Erick, and Esau stayed and talked.  We knew that Esau had been having some problems, and Erick had been having a hard time dealing with him.

Please pray for Esau as he faces a difficult period of his life.  Pray that he will be open and tender to the leading of the Lord and willing to wait on Him.

After they left, Sunny and Bonita came and did some spring cleaning.  Took all the dishes out of the dish cupboard and cleaned those shelves.  Took everything out of the long cupboard by the sink and cleaned in there.  After they got everything put back, they swept and washed the floor.  Then they scrubbed the front doors.  I was thankful for their help in doing some of those jobs that are too hard for me to do.

There were lots of people who came to the door again today,.

This afternoon, Daddy sawed the plywood pieces for the side and top of the school cupboard, and I got those nailed on.  Maybe tomorrow, we can get the door put on.  I also got one of the bulletin boards moved today and will need to move the other one before we put the cupboard door on.  Then I guess the cupboard should be painted.

Also had Daddy cut up a pumpkin for me for supper.  It had been in the cupboard since before we went to town and was starting to spoil.  The two ends needed to be cut off, one more than the other, and thrown away, but the rest of it was good and tasted good too.  Also made spaghetti for supper.

After supper, I relaxed and prayed and crocheted for a while.  Just finished doing the dishes.

Less than a dozen youth here this evening for youth meeting.  The meeting is over, and it is raining fairly hard now.  A few have left, but some are still here.

“ And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.”  Mark 7:37

December 18.  6:40 p.m. Raining.  The youth are supposed to come this evening and practice music for the special meetings, but….  There was hardly any sun today, but there was no rain until just now.  We were thankful for that as today was laundry day.

Laundry was the first order of business right after breakfast and quiet time.  Threw the kitchen curtains into the wash too.  While the clothes were washing, I made some chocolate chip raisin bars (except I used mixed fruit instead of raisins).  After hanging out the clothes, I rested and crocheted a while.  Then Daddy helped me finish the cupboard - cut the door, put on hinges and a door catch and door handle.  Also got the other bulletin board moved; and this afternoon, I put new borders around both of them.

After nap today, I cut up a nice popo that someone had brought us a couple days ago.  It tasted good.  We hadn’t had popo for a while.  Then I washed the kitchen windows while I was waiting for water to heat for washing my hair.  After washing my hair, I put the kitchen curtains back up.

After supper, I relaxed and crocheted some more.  Almost done now with Jenny’s afghan.

“34  And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  35For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.  36For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  37Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?  38Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”  Mark 8:34-38

December 19.  Another day with almost no sunshine, but it was still quite humid.  We had a little rain late afternoon, early evening, but it is not raining now.  There are only nine here again for Bible school, same as Tuesday evening.

After my quiet time and crocheting time this morning, Daddy turned on the generator, and I worked on the PNG history/geography course for a good while.  After that, I put undercoat paint on the new cupboard while Daddy changed the oil in the generator.  Then I worked a little while on lesson plans for the first week of school.  Late in the morning, we went for a walk.

This afternoon, I painted the cupboard door yellow.  Will paint the rest of the cupboard tomorrow, Lord willing.  Then I worked on lesson plans some more and also more on the history/geography course before warming up supper.  Did more lesson planning after supper.

“7And there was a cloud that overshadowed them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.  8And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.”  Mark 9:7,8

Getting Strength Back

12/26/2014

December 15.  The world was hidden by fog when we got up this morning.  Soon it began to rain.  I don’t know when the rain stopped, but it was cloudy the rest of the morning.  The sun peeked through for a short time right after noon, but more rain came later in the afternoon.

I was thankful that Daddy felt more like eating today.  He ate a small breakfast, but ate more for lunch and supper.  Is starting to get a little strength back so I thank the Lord for that.

After breakfast and quiet time, I did some exercises and walking.  Then I tried to relax in the recliner and crochet for a while, but kept having to get up to answer the door.  Daddy turned on the generator for a while and I finished up another Bible school lesson.  Then I did some more sawing, hammering, and screwing while water was heating for dishes.  When the dish water was hot, I stopped and washed the dishes.  Then worked more on the cupboard addition.  If Daddy feels well enough tomorrow, maybe he will cut the plywood for the shelves.

Made a beef veggie pie for dinner.  It was late getting done because of interruptions.  We had just sat down to eat when NTM called and said the chopper was on its way with our fuel and dangerous goods.  So after we ate, we waited for the chopper and for people to bring things down to the house from the top of the airstrip.  We didn’t think to tell the pilot he could have landed near the house.  Since it rained this morning, there wouldn’t be a lot of dust.  Last time he landed by the house, the ground was very dry, and the kitchen and our bedroom got filled with red dust.

After nap, I answered the door a few times more.  Maro’s mother came to see if we had a veggie peeler she could buy.  We didn’t, but I gave her a little bag of goodies.  After a while. Erisapet’s mother came.  She wanted a box to put her clothes in.  I gave her a box and a bag of goodies too.  She said she didn’t come in for lotu yesterday because she has too much pain in her back and legs, and there were a lot of people so she couldn’t stretch her legs out; but she sat out on the hill and listened to the sermon.

I started doing some work in the computer - added birthdays to the schedule I had planned out for the next school year.  Then Neomi came by and I talked with her for a while.  Her baby is due in about two months.  She and her two sisters are having to buy “head pay” for their mother.  It has been a year now since their mother passed away.

After that, I started figuring out the cost of school materials for this coming year so I can give a list to the fathers.  Went hunting for all the books and have them all together now - some in the foot locker and some in the guest room.

“6He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.  7Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.  8For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.”  Mark 7:6-8

December 16.  It was cold last night, but back to hot and dry again today.

Warmed up muffins for my breakfast.  Ate and read Bible.  Sunny came around 8:30 to grind grain.  Also had her sweep the floor.  It was another day of answering the door many times.

The whole frame for the cupboard addition is finished now, and Daddy cut one piece of plywood for me today for the middle shelf.  Maybe tomorrow he can cut the rest of the pieces of plywood for the side and top and door.

Computer time today was spent working on the school schedule, verses to review and new ones to learn, and school rules.  Also sorted a few things that were in a box we brought back from town, cleaned the bathroom, and looked for a cookie recipe.  Tomorrow I’ll try to make Daddy some cookies.

Praise the Lord, Daddy was doing much better today.  He still needs to get some strength back, but ate well today, and is teaching Bible school this evening.  Only Owena people are here.  Don’t know where the Marivo people are.

“20And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.  21For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.”  Mark 7:20-23

A Saturday and a Sunday

December 13.  Very warm again today, with sunshine this morning and clouds this afternoon.  We were thankful for the cool breeze that came up later in the day.

Lotu started at a good time this morning.  Mike continued the series on the family, talking about our children being a gift from God.

After lotu, Sosthenes chopped up some kindlin’ for Daddy.  A few other people hung around for various reasons.  Sunny and Apekio swept the meeting room.  I washed the dishes and then made tortillas for my lunches.  Did some sawing, drilling, and screwing for the cabinet addition.

Daddy wasn’t feeling quite strong enough when he got up to go to lotu, but he seemed to gain more strength as the day went by.  I am thankful that he is doing better.

(Dad had been quite sick with the flu.)

This afternoon, I washed my hair before getting the rest of the update e-mails ready to send.  Then I prepared carrots and broccoli for our supper veggie and some chicken to go with the rice I had cooked yesterday.

After supper, while Daddy was napping, I sat and relaxed and crocheted for a while.  Then I started printing out the Galatians through Colossians booklets to give out tomorrow in lotu, until the toner ran out.  Then I had to stop and replace the toner.  I did let the printer then finish up what hadn’t gotten done, but now I need to do the rest of the printing.

“And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.”  Mark 6:34

December 14.  Didn’t get as warm today and is quite chilly this evening.  The morning was super busy, and tiring.  Made pancakes for Daddy.  Also had to make syrup.  Made muffins for myself and also made granola so I could use the oven for two things at once.  Then there were LOTS of dishes to do.  Doing dishes in the morning is not a good idea.  It just means too much time at once on my feet.  No time to do much else this morning, except that I did get the rest of the Galatians booklets stapled.

Daddy has been running a fever again today and has been in bed most of the day.

Lotu started late this morning.  There were a good number here.  Matthew did specialized teaching this morning.  At the end of the meeting, he gave announcements.  One was that there would be a baptism during the New Year meetings.

In the afternoon meeting, Matthew went back to preaching from Galatians.

After the meeting this afternoon, I worked on a Bible school lesson until almost supper time.  Daddy didn’t eat anything this evening - just had a cup of bouillion.  I relaxed and crocheted for a while after supper.

“And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.”  Mark 6:46

A Week of Life in Goroka, part 3:  Three Very Busy Days!

December 3.  A very warm and very busy day.  Didn’t even wake up until 6:30 this morning, but was awake for a while in the night again trying to get comfortable in bed.

Last night, Daddy heard from Randy again with word that Jeff and Elizabeth will be needing the car after Friday. So that only gave us three days to do all our shopping and everything else we need to get done.  We went out about 8:00 to get started and spent a good part of the day running around town.  Went to West Goroka first - Papindo and Goroka Food Mart.  Took things back to the house and then went to the new Highlands Pharmacy to get passport photos made.  By the time we finished there, my back was already starting to hurt so we made a quick trip back to the house, and Daddy ran upstairs to get me some ibuprofen.  Next we went to Papindo midtown.  Stopped at post office, but no mail.  From there to Goroka Stationery, Bintangor, and a few little stores.  By then it was lunch time so our next stop was uptown Papindo for lunch at the café.  Then we shopped there.  When we came outside, we ran into Sunny and Wilson.  They said they had been looking for us around town.  They went along with us to SVS, and then the Chinese stores on the opposite corner.  I had them look around for uniforms while we did food shopping.  They finally found some shirts and trousers in one of the Chinese stores so tomorrow we’ll go back and get what is needed.

It was mid-afternoon when we got back to the house.  Sunny and Wilson helped us carry boxes upstairs.  We gave them each a dish of ice cream.  Then Daddy went back uptown to get butter and meat and more ice cream, and he dropped Sunny and Wilson off across from Papindo midtown where there were a number of other Owenians waiting.

In the mean time, I took a nap, and Daddy took a nap when he got back.  This evening, we spent packing our supplies into boxes.  I also wrote a note to the embassy to go along with the passport pictures and wrote a couple e-mails.

(Please pray that Mom and Dad’s passports can be processed and renewed quickly.  Thank you!)

“2And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.  3And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.  4Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.  5Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.  6Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.”  Deuteronomy 8:2-6

December 4.  Another very, very warm day.  No rain.  We went out early again this morning to try to get as much done as we could today.  About mid-morning, Phinehas met up with us at Bintangor.  He just wanted to get his money and was going to try to get a ride back to Kainantu.  After Bintangor, we went back to the house so I could get some ibuprofen - my back was already hurting.  On the way back up town, we saw Phinehas along the road.  He wasn’t able to get his ride back to Kainantu so he tagged along with us.  We had him go with us to help pick out the uniforms for school.  Wilson met up with us when we were getting shirts and trying to get trousers at the first store.  They didn’t have enough trousers so we went to another store to get the trousers.  We still need to find material for the skirts for the girls.  There was some plain blue material at Papindo, but it wasn’t very strong so we didn’t get it.

After we got the shirts and trousers, we went to Papindo for lunch.  Bought meat pies for the two guys.  Daddy got a hamburger, and I ordered chow mein.  There was way more chow mein than I could eat so I gave half of that to the two guys too.  When we finished eating, we shopped for a couple little things.  Sunny met up with us there at Papindo.  From there, we went to Endeavor Stationery and got notebooks for school.  Then we went to the midtown Papindo where we looked at the material but found out it wasn’t very strong.  By then I was pretty tired so we went back to the house.  The three young people helped us carry things upstairs and helped Daddy carry a box of dangerous goods down to take to NTM so Daddy could book a flight for fuel and other dangerous goods.  While they were gone, I took a much-needed nap.  I seem to be getting a bit dehydrated from being out so much in this hot weather.

Daddy came back shortly after I got up from nap.  David and Clemen came by with some cargo they want us to take back to Owena on the plane.  He said that Silvia still has not had her baby.  I packed up boxes with the notebooks and uniforms, filling in spaces with other items.

“When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”  Mark 2:17

December 5.  Not quite as hot today and raining this evening.

Last day of shopping.  Went out early to Papindo West.  Phinehas and Wilson found us there.  They said they had found some blue material at Goroka Food Mart that might do for skirts for the girls.  So we went down to GFM to check it out.  When we went inside, they had out samples of different kinds of snack crackers and sodas.  I had seen the rice crackers on sale the other day but didn’t pick them up because the ones we got at SIL were rancid.  How would I know if these were good or not?  Now with the opportunity to sample first, we found out they were good so got several packs of them.   Also got some Arnotts drumsticks crackers.  First, though, we went to check on the material.  It was nice material - cotton/silk I think the lady said (polyester maybe?).  Got twelve metres of that plus elastic and thread.

A quick stop back at the house.  Then uptown to check on calculators.  Checked City Pharmacy first, but theirs weren’t solar. Stopped at Hot Spot by Bintangor and got more yarn to sell to start replenishing the school funds.  Then went to the other Hot Spot and found some fairly nice solar calculators there for K7.90 each.  Since we got a dozen of them, they gave us a discount - K6.50 each - quite a bit more discount than we expected.  After that, I really didn’t need to do any other shopping so Daddy brought me back to the house.  Wilson had left us to go back and take care of some business for his father.

After that, Daddy and Phinehas went off to do bulk buying.  Then they came back to the house and got all the cargo that was boxed up and ready for the flight and took it over to MAF.

They were gone quite a while so I finally had my lunch.  I had just about finished when Daddy came in.  Phinehas had gone to Fish Park to be with some of the other Owenians.  I had a nap, and Daddy went out again to get meat and a few other things that we still hadn’t gotten.  When he came back, Wilson was with him again.  A couple other people came by to see Daddy.  By the time everyone left, it was almost 4:00.  Daddy had planned to take me out to do second hand store shopping this afternoon.  Since it was late, we just went to one store - Hamamas.  I did find three slips and a warm nightie there which is what I was looking for.  After that, I was too tired of shopping to just go look around, and my feet are too swollen too.  So I said that was enough, and Daddy was tired of shopping too.  The past three days have been so tiring as we’ve rushed, rushed, rushed here and there and back again trying to get everything done.  I’m thankful the Lord gave us good weather during the days of shopping.

After coming back to the house, it was time to fix supper.  We still had leftover rice and meat but no veggie.  So I cooked up a pot of carrots and broccoli.

Worked a bit today on the PNG history/geography, and this evening I worked out the schedule for the next school year.

And so ends a week of life in Goroka.

“Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go to possess it.”  Deuteronomy 11:8

A Week of Life in Goroka, part 2:  Waiting!

December 1.  The Lord gave us another lovely day today.  Very warm again.

Randy called Daddy this morning and said the mechanic said he would “get right on it” - the car.  So we waited and waited and waited.  No mechanic.  After lunch, Daddy gave the mechanic a call.  “I was coming, but other things came up,” he replied.  “will be there around 1:30.”  1:30 came and went.  So did 2:30 and 3:30.  Finally around 4:00, he arrived on the scene.  He checked out the vehicle and said the starter is bad.  He will come get the car first thing tomorrow morning and put another starter in it.

So we didn’t go anywhere today.  Worked on the song book - I think I finally have it ready to print.  Will need to do two song books (but just one for now) because there are too many songs for one.  It would be too thick to staple and fold.

This afternoon, after nap, I did dishes, washed my hair, and fixed rice for supper with ground beef gravy.  No veggies today.  We finished up the veggies yesterday.  We had apple instead.

“14Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”  Mark 1:14,15

December 2.  Did not sleep well last night.  It was so warm, and I could not get comfortable with my feet swollen and my back hurting.  I remember last year at this time, when we were in town, I had a lot of trouble with my feet swelling.

This morning, the mechanic was supposed to come around 9:00 and get the car or the starter and take it to be fixed.  Once again we waited and waited and waited.  Finally around 10:45, Daddy called him to see what was up.  He had locked the key in the vehicle he would be driving out here and hadn’t been able to get the vehicle open yet.  Finally around 11:15, he did show up here and removed the starter from the car.  We had no idea how long it would take him to fix it or when we might be able to use the car.

After that, we took a walk up to Papindo West to get a few things we needed for the rest of the day.  There were no veggies there though so we still had just rice with beef gravy and apple pieces to go with it.

During the time we were having our nap, the mechanic came back.  We didn’t hear him so we don’t know what time he had come.  When Daddy got up, he looked out the window and saw him out there working.  After the man got the car back together, it worked great.  About 3:15, we went uptown and did a little shopping.  We still have a LOT to do before we go back to the bush next Tuesday (?).

Sunny came around to see us this morning.  Said she had tried to find us uptown yesterday.  She plans to come back tomorrow to see if the car has been fixed so she can go to some of the stores with us.  She is staying with Maura until school is out.  Maura’s school doesn’t finished until next Tuesday, and they will head back to Owena on Wednesday.

Most of my computer time today was spent working on the PNG history and geography course.

“17And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.  18And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.”  Mark 1:17,18
