Thankful for God's supply of water

May 25 and 26.  I did not get to write in my journal last night (Saturday, the 25th).  Most of the evening was spent getting the soul-winning lesson finished and copies printed so they would be ready for class this evening.

The water trickled through the faucet all night long, and the tub was finally full about 6:30 Saturday morning.  We are thankful for that little trickle to give us enough water for laundry today.

Saturday morning lotu was a bit late and ended late too.  Tomas was in charge and gave a good, clear, simple talk, encouraging parents, and particularly fathers, in the spiritual training of their children, using notes that Lewis has been teaching from in Bible school.  Graham came in and said his verses after lotu.  He did very well.

Afterward there was a lot of laundry to do, and it was after 10:30 when we finished. So we were late calling Christy and Connie and it was getting close to their bedtime.  It was good to talk to them though, and I was happy for the time to relax after the tiring work of washing and hanging out clothes.

Also after lotu, Tomas went up to see if he could fix the water problem.  (Everyone else was out of water too.)

Worked on getting art materials together for school Monday until time to get lunch.  In the afternoon, Dallas and Makwi came to pay for Dallas’s schoolbooks that he needs starting this week.  Dallas and Phinehas were scheduled to come for keyboard class too, but Dallas said Phinehas wasn’t around.  Apparently he was still in the kunai somewhere helping his parents.

Husked corn to cook for supper and also cooked up the rest of the carrots.  Made spaghetti, and that finished up our fresh meat.

This morning (Sunday) after breakfast and quiet time, Daddy collated the soul-winning lessons, and I got holes punched in them for the students’ folders.  Then I got a few e-mails written before lotu.  The school students came to practice their special about 10:00.  Sosthenes was sick today so was not able to come.  People started coming in for the meeting shortly after that.  Daddy preached this morning on 1 Corinthians 12:1-7, and in the afternoon on verses 8-11.

I rested on the bed during the preaching of the first meeting as I was having some pain and it was hurting me to keep sitting.  The second meeting started later than Daddy expected.  I had tried to wait so I could be at that meeting, but finally got too tired and went for nap.  I spent the rest of the afternoon getting lesson plans ready for school this coming week.

This evening, I got more art stuff together and did some coloring to show examples of how different tools are used.  Dallas and Phinehas were here practicing.  Now soul-winning students are here for class.

“41And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.  42And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”  Acts 5:41,42

May 27.  I thank the Lord for a better sleep last night than what I have been having.

This morning after breakfast and quiet time, I got the clothes folded that we washed on Saturday.  When the kids came for school, we had Bible class.  Then they had a break and set up the volleyball net and played ball a while before coming in to work on art projects.  They spent the rest of the morning drawing, coloring, painting, etc.  While they were having fun, I was able to get a couple e-mails written and a Bible test made up for the current lesson.  A few of the students were still working when I warmed up our dinner around 12:00.  I took pictures of them two by two as they finished their projects and were ready to hang them up on the bulletin board.   Sosthenes was not here today and apparently is quite sick with a fever.

After we had our lunch, I had keyboard class with Dallas and Phinehas.  Dallas is doing really well and played both his songs perfectly today.  They had to learn two new things today which they will use in the two new songs they’ll be practicing - repeat and 8va.

After they left, we had our nap.  It was about 2:00, and I rested and slept until almost 3:30.  Then I had my mineral drink, listened to Bonita recite her verses for the term, got the new books together for phonics and social studies classes tomorrow, washed a couple little pumpkins so Daddy could cut up some for me to prepare for supper, visited a little bit with Erisa who came with her one-week-old baby girl, got the pumpkin on to cook, started getting other things together for classes tomorrow, and put leftovers on to warm for supper.

Now it is going on 7:00.  We have eaten, and I have done the dishes.  Now I need to put some things on the chalkboard for tomorrow’s math class.

“And there was great joy in that city.”  Acts 8:8

May 23.  Fixed hot rice cereal for breakfast this morning.  After breakfast and quiet time, I made a visual for the song Phinehas would be playing for his recital today -”In the Sunshine, In the Shadows.”

The students have finished memorizing John 3:1-21 in Bible class.  Now they can study all the verses and say them to get a prize.  They had a test in Bible class today, too.  Then we started the new lesson, on the crucifixion of Christ.  I didn’t realize it was going to break my heart as I related the story, but I started weeping as I was talking.

In phonics class today, they finished their phonics workbook.  It was a fairly long lesson so we didn’t have time to read in the reader.  But there was enough time for Dallas and Phinehas to play for their recital.  They each made a couple mistakes, but that was to be expected the first time playing in front of others.  Otherwise they did very well.

They also finished their science book today so next week will start on social studies.  We did three “Hurrahs” for finishing science.

After nap this afternoon, I had my mineral drink and then cut up a small popo before going outside for a little fresh air and sunshine.  When I came back inside, I put away things out of the last little box Daddy had brought home from town.  Found some little gifts to send down to Judy for her birthday.  Tomorrow she will turn four.

Put some eggs on to boil for egg salad for our supper sandwiches.  Recorded grades.  Already had all the papers graded for today.  After supper and dishes, I practiced keyboard a while.  Now some of the church folks are here practicing some songs to sing at outreach.

“And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.”  Acts 5:32

May 24.  Heard rain off and on during the night, and this morning was very, very foggy.  It was about 10:00 before the fog lifted and the Lord sent some sunshine.  The Lord sent more rain this afternoon.

MAF came in today with the twin otter.  Took the CARE team out and brought Kelly in with a planeload of things for the health center.  They are going to start building a rural hospital here in Owena to serve all of this area.  This is the second rural hospital in the country.  They will add on to the existing health center and put in ten beds for patients.  There will be an x-ray machine, an operating theatre, and lots of other equipment for hospital use.  They will be building ten new houses for doctors, nurses, and other health workers.  Kelly said they are also supposed to put a surgeon in here.  People from all the surrounding language groups will come here for any major health problems.  Just think of the opportunities for spreading the gospel to these workers and patients!

We saved time at the end of Bible class this morning to practice our song once more so the students will be ready to sing on Sunday.  They finished their reading workbooks this morning in phonics class and we did three “Hurrah’s” for that and the phonics workbooks they finished yesterday.  Then they learned to sing “In the Sunshine, In the Shadows” and also sang the other English choruses they have learned.

Today is little Judy’s fourth birthday.  I got a gift package ready and sent it down with Steve today.

This afternoon, I started sorting through books so I could find which ones to use for prizes for the school students when they say their Bible passage.  Steve and Sosthenes both came this afternoon and recited their verses, but I didn’t have the prizes ready yet so told them to come back tomorrow and get them.  Steve did an excellent job.  He has really been diligent in learning his Bible verses.  Oh, how I pray that he will get saved!  I am glad that he has these verses hidden in his heart.  Sosthenes did very well also.

Late this afternoon, we ran out of water.  There was a trickle coming through the tub faucet, however, so Daddy filled up what buckets were empty, and then we started filling up the tub.

“38And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: 39But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.”  Acts 5:38,39

May 21.  Not quite as cold over night, but was overcast and chilly throughout the morning and early afternoon.  Around mid-afternoon, the sun came out and the air warmed up more.  I was happy to get out for a little walk around the yard.  The ground is quite dry after almost three dry weeks with just a little rain.

Before school this morning, I worked on acknowledging supporters and getting the monthly update file ready to go to Christy.

In Bible class this morning, we reviewed for their test which will be on Thursday.  Then the students enjoyed each having a turn to play the scale up and down the keyboard.  After that, we practiced our hymn which they will sing on Sunday morning.

They got out of school early today as it didn’t take them long to do their science test.  It was a blessing to me to eat early and have an early nap.  After I went for a walk this afternoon, I finished up the grading and got things ready for school tomorrow.  Then I worked more on the monthly updates.  Also washed greens that Mora had brought yesterday and some onions to cook with them.  Put them on to cook while I was preparing supper.  Also cooked up some popo to have on my pancakes tomorrow and Friday mornings.

Apekio came this evening with a few potatoes and stayed and talked a little while.  After she left, I started washing the dishes and Daddy finished them.

“And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.”  Acts 4:33

May 22.  Slept in until 6:30 this morning.  The Lord gave us another dry day with a light rain shower this afternoon.

David gave a short message this morning on the work of the Holy Spirit and did a good job.  Lotu finished early, and we started school around 8:30.  It was nice to get an early start and finish early too.

I forgot to boil eggs for lunch, and there was no main dish made either.  So I just scrambled up a couple eggs to use for our sandwiches.  Then this afternoon, I cooked rice and made a meat gravy to go with it.  Had cooked up the greens yesterday afternoon, and I had a couple pieces of corn left too.

Had a lot to do this afternoon - wash hair, finish grading and recording grades, get everything together for tomorrow, write things on the chalkboard, color the penguin on the 6-division chart and put it out in the schoolroom, put the new Bible and music lessons in the students’ notebooks, highlight Daddy’s Bible school notes at the places where the students fill in questions.  Part of that work didn’t get done until after supper this evening.

“Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.”  Acts 5:29

May 19.  No rain last night, but was cloudy and cool most of the day.  A little rain early afternoon, and then a little sunshine.

After fixing our pancake breakfasts this morning and having quiet time, there was still time to sit and work at the computer before lotu.  The students will finish three workbooks this week.

I was thankful to be feeling well enough to sit through the whole meeting this morning.  By the end of the meeting, I was pretty tired, however.  So, after lunch, I went down for my nap.

There were a lot of visitors from all different places - people from neighboring language groups who were here for the CARE training, plus members of the CARE team.

Daddy preached in the two meetings today on the second half of I Corinthians 11, the Lord’s supper.  It was a really good message for bringing out the plan of salvation, and a clear Gospel presentation was given.

Interestingly, David’s older brother, Ubet, was here and stayed for both meetings.  After the second meeting, he talked with Daddy quite a while about salvation.  He seemed to have a clear understanding, and said that he was saved in 2011.  He seemed sure that he is saved, but said he has not been baptized since his salvation.  Ubet said he hadn’t planned to come here today.  As a matter of fact, he hadn’t planned to go to church.  He was on his way to his coffee garden to work and was almost to the airstrip when it occurred to him that he needed to go to church.  So he turned around and went back home, washed himself and changed his clothes, and headed for church.

This afternoon, I was busy with more computer work.  Then I made spaghetti for supper.  There were plenty of leftover veggies.

This evening, there was a lot of printing and photo-copying to do.  Also had to change the toner cartridge in the laser printer.

Daddy had soul-winning class and finished up a lesson so I need to hurry and get the next one ready.

“19But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.  20For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”  Acts 4:19,20

May 20.  Quite chilly last night and down to the upper 50’s this morning.  It was a fairly cool day and is turning cold again this evening.  A dry day too.

Bethuel was back in school today.  I was happy to see him, and he seemed happy to be back.  He is not completely well yet and not very strong.

After I got the grading done this afternoon and got things ready for school tomorrow, I was able to get started on an update letter.  Just finished that this evening.

“And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word.”  Acts 4:29

Keyboard Students Ready for Music Recital

May 17.  The Lord sent us a mixture of rain and sun today.  It has been raining off and on throughout the day and is raining this evening.  It is quite chilly this evening too.

We didn’t get very far in our music lesson in Bible class today, but I wanted time for them to sing and finish learning the song “Husat Man I Laik” (“Whosoever Will”).  So we’ll try to finish the music lesson on Monday.

We are trying to learn about nouns now in English class, but the students are having a little bit of a hard time.  I guess they will get it after a while.

Phinehas and Dallas came for their music lesson around 3:00, just like they said they would.  They both did really well on their two choruses so will plan for them to have their recital in school this coming week.  I gave them some extra pieces to work on this coming week too.

After they left, I had corn to husk for supper.  Mora brought us corn again.  This is the second time he has brought corn, and he brings really nice soft corn.  Even Daddy enjoys eating it.  Also husked uxai and cut it up with some carrots and onions for supper.  Along with the veggies we had leftover potatoes and chicken gravy.

“11This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.  12Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”  Acts 4:11,12

May 18.  A very warm, humid day after a rainy night.  No rain today; just humid.

The Lord sent us a pretty morning rainbow.

Amos took Tomas’s place in looking after lotu today.  Tomas has been in Marivo working in his coffee garden.  Amos got his notebooks mixed up and brought the wrong notebook so he gave a message he had given before, the one about Jesus being the grapevine and believers being the branches.

After lotu, there was plenty of laundry to do.  I was thankful for Daddy’s help.  While clothes were washing, I got clean sheets put on the bed.  Then worked on lesson plans for school next week.  After we got the clothes hung out, I was quite tired and had a little nap.  Afterward, I finished up lesson plans.  Didn’t have to fix anything for dinner today, just warm things up.  Daddy got all of the clothes in which was a big help.  I was thankful for a good nap this afternoon.

I am thankful for a couple popo that somebody brought this weekend too.  I cut up one of them this afternoon.  Cooked part of it to go on my pancakes this coming week.  Went out for a little walk around the yard, but it was hard to breathe, the air was so close.

A little later, somebody came to say hello.  It was Susi.  She is married now to a man named Mike from Okapa.  They have a little boy named Erik, about 9 months old.

Just before supper, I got orange coconut cookies made for Daddy.

“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus.”  Acts 4:13

Thankful for Fresh Veggies

May 15.  More dry weather.  It was nice and cool most of the day, and we thought maybe it wasn’t going to get humid today.  But by mid-afternoon, we were hot and sweaty again.

Amos was in charge of lotu this morning and talked about being clean through the word, using a number of texts starting with John 15:3.

Daddy left just before lotu was over because NTM came with our LP and a box of hazardous goods.*

Because we started school early, we were able to get some extra work done in Phonics class.  Bethuel was absent again today.  His father said he is pretty sick with vomiting and fever, etc.  I hope he doesn’t have typhoid.

Dallas stayed after school and practiced keyboard.  We finished classes by 12:00 which was a blessing.  That way we were able to get an earlier nap.  After nap, I washed my hair and then made bread.  Had papers to grade and grades to record after that.  There were a lot of knocks on the door this afternoon too.  People brought corn, uxai, and avocados.  Someone had brought cucumbers last night too.  I was thankful for all these fresh veggies.

“41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.  42And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”  Acts 2:41,42

*Please pray for these pilots who put their lives on the line to be a blessing to the missionaries and bring supplies to them.  They fly in all kinds of weather and into all kinds of difficult places.  Often they have to transport hazardous things, such as bottles of LP and other flammables.  It is hard for pilots to raise support.  Please pray that more people will be willing to support pilots.  Even though they are not usually directly involved in church planting, they are an important part of the missionary team.  They provide a vital link to the outside world, transportation, food and medical supplies, and sometimes even emergency services and medical evacuations.

May 16.  Dry, humid, very warm, and sweaty.  A relatively quiet day.  People are off to their gardens and other places during this dry weather.  Some are sleeping in the bush and hunting possums.

We finished our Bible lesson in school today - the story of Jesus’ arrest and trial.  Tomorrow they will have their music lesson, and maybe Monday too.

They had a big project to do in phonics class today so we went about 15 minutes overtime.  But we just shortened some of the preliminary exercises in math class.  In science, they finished unit 6; and after they do the test on that unit, there are just a couple pages to read for unit 7.  Then we will go to social studies.

Phinehas and Dallas stayed and practiced keyboard after school.  They did really well today.  Sounds like they are about ready for their recital.

I was thankful for a good nap this afternoon.  There was grading to do afterward and things to get ready for tomorrow.  Then I cooked potatoes and chicken gravy for supper.  Somebody brought us some really nice potatoes the other day.   We had leftover greens and other leftover veggies to go with the main dish.

“46And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, 47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”  Acts 2:46,47

Busy Days, A Sick Student, and Biscuits and Ginger Cookies

May 13.  Another dry day.  Very humid.  Looked like we might get some rain, but then the winds came up and blew away the rain.

Bethuel was sick today and he was not in school.  We had noticed that he was not in lotu yesterday.

We finished school a little before noon today.  I was thankful to be able to lie down earlier for nap.  There was just a little bit of grading to do after nap.  Then I sorted out the baby things that Daddy had bought in town, and also the yarn, before making myself some ginger cookies.  When I was getting the cookies ready to go into the oven, I remembered that I was supposed to make bread today.  It was too late then.  So I threw together some biscuits - barley/bean/wheat.  Then we forgot to put the dish water on to heat while we were eating supper.  So after supper, I got things ready for classes tomorrow while the dish water was heating.  Just finished doing the dishes a few minutes ago.

“25For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 26Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 27Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  28Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.”  Acts 2:25-28

May 14.  Another dry and very humid day.  We saw rain in the west, but it did not come here.

Finished up the quarterly newsletter this morning before school and have that ready to send off to Christy.

Bethuel was absent again from school so he must be pretty sick.

It was late when we finished school today.  It took the students a while to finish their questions in science.  Phinehas and Dallas stayed to practice keyboard, and Sunny and Bonita prepared greens and sorted out plastic bags. It was almost 2:00 before we went for nap, and I didn’t get up until after 4:00.  Then I had carrots and broccoli to prepare for supper.  I had just gotten started on that job, however, when two ladies came from Marivo with new babies - both girls.  So I got some baby things out to give them.  After I got the veggies on to cook, I worked on grading.  When the veggies were done, I warmed up the leftover spaghetti and sauce.

We finally ate around 5:30.  Then I did dishes.  After that, I got things ready for school tomorrow.  Discovered that there is a second test for unit 1 in English.  We had done test one, and we had already done one lesson in unit 2.  But tomorrow we will go back and do the second test for unit one.

By the time everything was done, it was time for my lemon soda.

Phinehas came to practice again this evening.

“31He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.  32This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.”  Acts 2:31,32

Warm, Dry Days

May 11.  The Lord gave us a little taste of rain this morning and a few little sprinkles again this afternoon.  There were more clouds today, and it was very humid.  Otherwise it was pretty much a dry day.  The ground is quite dry after a week and a half of dry weather.

Mike was in charge of lotu this morning.  He spoke on assurance of salvation and did a good job.

After lotu there was laundry to do.  I was thankful to be feeling pretty well this morning and thankful that we were able to hang clothes outside too.  At first it looked like we might get rain.  After clothes were hung out, though, I was pretty tired.  Had a little snack and lay down for a nap.  Had another nap after lunch.  I needed both of them.  I was thankful for Daddy’s help with the laundry and for getting them in when it was time too.

This afternoon, I finished getting lesson plans ready for this coming week of school and got the student copy of the new soul-winning lesson made.  Then I fixed up a veggie medley for supper - onions, uxai, broccoli, and carrots.  We still had some leftover chicken ‘n’ rice.  Daddy cleaned the bathtub for me which was a big help.  I cleaned the bathroom sink and toilet after doing dishes this evening.

After getting to the computer, I had some scanning to do, photo-copying, and the new soul-winning lessons to print for tomorrow evening.

“ And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”  Acts 2:21

May 12.  The Lord gave us another dry day, and very warm too.  It is still warm this evening.  It is just about 7:00 now, and people are arriving for soul-winning class.  It gets dark earlier in the evening now and light earlier in the morning.  That makes it nice because people come earlier for meetings and also because it is easier to get up earlier in the morning.

It took a couple hours to get everything made for breakfast this morning - pancakes for Daddy, pancakes for myself, eggs for Daddy, and had to make syrup too.  In between times, I got the chalkboard washed, locked the school cupboard, and covered the bookshelves.

After breakfast and quiet time, I got the bed made, finished folding the clothes that were washed yesterday, and sorted out the vitamins that had come from Christy and Connie.  By then it was almost lotu time; but, also by then, I was quite tired.  I lay down for a nap and slept until preaching time.  Got up, had a drink, and went out to the meeting.

Daddy preached today on 1 Corinthians 11:3-16, a much-needed message as people have been so confused about what is proper, for the woman especially, regarding the head covering.  This teaching covered both meetings.  There seemed to be better understanding and better reception of this teaching today than at other times it was taught on.  These people do need a lot of repetition in order to get a good grasp of Biblical truths, but we are so thankful for growth and changes that we are seeing in conversation and in attitude.

Between meetings, we had our lunch.  While Daddy rested, I got the students’ new Bible lessons trimmed and punched, the 6-multiply flash cards cut up, and the 6-multiply chart put together.

It was about 2:45 when we went for our afternoon nap.  I rested/slept until 4:15.  Had to get spaghetti made for supper.

“22Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.”  Acts 2:22-24
