Rain and the New Church

Dad and Mom called on Saturday and it was a joy to be able to talk to them.  They seem to be doing well and are thankful for everyone’s prayers.

Lately the Lord has been blessing Owena with much rain.  However, because of this heavy rain, no one has been able to work on the house.  Dad and Mom have asked for prayer that the Lord will send some days of sunshine along with the rain so that work on the house can continue.

Dad and Mom are also thankful for the growth in the new church.  The members seem to be open to instruction and counsel from the word of God.  Dad and Mom have asked that people would pray that the church will get started on a firm foundation and grow and become a strong church in Christ Jesus.

For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.  I Corinthians 3:11

Getting Ready to Go Back to Owena

The Lord was gracious and allowed just enough sun and break from the rain so that Dad and Mom could return to the village.

The Lord also provided a special type of modem for Dad and Mom.  If it works correctly, they will be able to communicate with us via email while they are in the village.  They should be able to email us once a week.  If you would like to email them, you will find their email address on the Home page of this blog.  Please note:  They cannot get pictures on their email while they are in the village.  Because of the blessing of this modem, I should be able to make regular and current updates on this blog.

Another blessing the Lord provided is a new computer.  We are praying it will be of much help to the ministry and will run well so that I can make regular updates.  I have not been able to update on a consistent basis for the last couple of months due to computer problems.  Thank you for your prayers.
Below is the last journal entry Mom sent before returning to the village.

From Mom:

June 22.  Heard a little bit of rain the first part of the night last night, but didn’t hear any more after that.  Neither did Daddy.  There must have been a pretty good rain while we were sleeping, however, because the whole road was very wet and muddy this morning.  However, there has been no rain today, and the Lord even gave us some sunshine this afternoon.  What a joy it was to see the sunshine!  Thank you, Lord, for being so gracious.  There was enough sunshine to heat the water today, so I was able to wash my hair this afternoon and will be able to take a shower this evening.

Today was busy with packing, cleaning, writing e-mails, getting income report up-to-date, getting time put on the Digicel modem for the computer, going out to get a few last minute food items, going to the MAF hangar to get some cargo from there to take over to NTM.  We went once and then had to go back again later, and had to wait a while even then.  We weren’t able to get the cargo until early afternoon because MAF had a medivac — one of the pilot’s wives had to be taken to Moresby.  Then the rest of the staff was in a meeting for several hours so the place was closed up.  Only Matilda was there — in the office.

For supper, we had gotten meat pies at SVS.  Tried to eat up all the leftovers along with the meat pies.  I guess we ate most of them.  Shouldn’t need any snack this evening.

“30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: 31But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.”  John 20:30,31

He Is Just The Same Today

June 17.  Wow!  It’s almost bedtime already!  I’d better get busy here and finish up business for tonight.

Today was another cool, cloudy day.  Maybe yesterday’s lovely morning weather was the eye of the storm.  That means we have a few more days of rainy weather ahead.  Had a big rain again this afternoon.  Power was out for a while, but it was during office hours so they had the generator running.  We were thankful to have power this evening.

It was a blessing to have an e-mail from Connie this morning with Psalm 23 at the end.  Such a comforting Psalm!

Went out early this morning so we could shop before the Friday crowds filled the town.   Went to New Century first and got a couple things.  Then to Papindo, Bintangor, and SVS.  Couldn’t find much for fresh veggies so guess we’re stuck with carrots for the weekend.  Was happy to find some roasted pumpkin seeds, and watermelon seeds at Papindo (both with just salt as the other ingredient).  They also had lentils.  It is the first time we have seen lentils there.  We used to get them at Bintangor, but they went way up in price.  So we quit getting them.

Before going into Bintangor, we hopped across the road to the Bird (a hotel) to use their facilities, and Daddy checked on their car rental costs – much less than the place next door where we checked the other day – about 1/3 the cost.  So looks like that could be a possibility if nothing else is available. While at the Bird, we bumped into an AOG lady who said that they have prayed for us.  Apparently they have Bible study and prayer meetings with MAF people and other people that we are acquainted with in town.  Her name was Kathy, and she was really nice.  Had her teenage son with her who just graduated from high school so they’ll be going back to the states soon to get him settled there.  Then they’ll be going to work in Sicily.  They are from Boston, but are Sicilian background.

We also found a modem today, at Bintangor, for only K150.  Dan Perrett helped to get it working in the computer so we can connect to the internet.

When the shopping was done, we stopped by NTM to see what they have available for flights next week.  Looks like we won’t be able to get back to Owena until Wednesday or Thursday next week at the earliest.  Both MAF and NTM are backed up because of the bad weather that’s been hanging around the country, and also because of shortage of pilots.

We thank the Lord that the truck worked fine today.

This afternoon, we didn’t go anywhere.  I spent most of the time this afternoon and evening working on the song file Connie had sent — trying to make corrections and changes in it.  I am seeing what a big job it is to set up a new song book and get it accurate for printing.

Baked chicken and potatoes for supper.  Carrots was our only choice for veggie, but they were good anyway.  We are thankful for whatever the Lord provides for us.

“9I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture….  11I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep….  14I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.”  John 10:9,11,14

He Is Just The Same Today

There are times when we grow weary
Of the burdens of the day,
When we long to have them lightened,
                Or be lifted quite away.
Then a sweet voice seems to whisper,
“All the load upon me lay.
When on earth I bore men’s burdens –
I am just the same today!”

                Chorus:
He is just the same to-day,
Yes, He’s just the same to-day,
                Our blessed Lord and Saviour,
He is just the same to-day.
All our burdens and our sorrows
                Will be lifted quite away,
If we only trust in Jesus,
For He’s just the same today.

Oh, the thought is full of comfort
To the heart that’s weary grown.
He who knew and bore men’s sorrows,
Leaves us not to walk alone.
His great heart is touched with pity,
                And He wipes our tears away;
Oh, this Christ who wept with Mary –
He is just the same today!

Heart of mine, what are thy burdens
To the burden of the Cross?
Canst thou not be stronger braver? –
Better bear earth’s pain and loss?
                Oh, remember and take courage,
                He is never far away
Whom they called the friend of sinners –
He is just the same today!

Quite A Day!

June 15.  It has been quite a day.  Went out around 9:00ish this morning, intending to finish last minute shopping, and got back a little before noon.  Spent almost K1000 (about $300.00 to $400.00) by the end of the day, but came home empty-handed, except for receipts.

We do thank the Lord for His tender loving care throughout the day.  And we are thankful for a good night’s rest last night.  It rained most of the night, and did not look very pleasant early this morning.  Didn’t look like a very good laundry day.  Nevertheless laundry had to be done.  Fixed rice cereal for breakfast while Daddy was filling up the washing machine.  It was ready to eat while the clothes were washing.  And had time to read Bible too.  Got the clothes hung out and then had prayer time.

Then, as mentioned, we went out to shop.  First stop, however, was fuel for the truck.  There was no petrol at the stations in town so we went outside town a short jaunt to a station we had been to before.  They always seem to have petrol when nobody else does.  Daddy drove up to the pump, and ordered K50 worth of fuel — at K4/liter.  The pump man did his job, and Daddy paid him, and asked for a receipt, remarking “None of the stations in town have petrol, so we came here.”  At that, the man’s countenance changed.  He looked frightened.  He had just filled the tank with diesel.  Daddy had pulled up to the diesel pump instead of the petrol pump, and neither of us had noticed.  The man kept saying it wasn’t his fault, and we assured him that it wasn’t.  Other workers came over to the truck to see what was going on.  We had to keep saying that it wasn’t the pump man’s fault.  “Whatever you do, don’t start the truck,” they said.  Daddy didn’t.  He put it in gear, however, and the men pushed it over to the side.  They said they would drain out the diesel and put in petrol.  Daddy decided he had better call the Hollands first and let them know what had happened.  Dave said to get in touch with Mountain Motors and have them tow the vehicle to their workshop and handle the problem there.  Daddy had to find a phone book to get a number for MM.  He called them, and the owner wasn’t there at the time.  So we sat and waited, and waited, and waited.  (The sun did come out while we were sitting there, although there were still lots of clouds.)  Finally, over an hour later, a truck came to tow us to the workshop.  Daddy had to spend another K10 to buy a container and K25 for some petrol in the container so MM could put it in the truck after they drained out the diesel.  The service station manager did make the pump man pay something, however.  We figured he is actually supposed to ask whether the vehicle is petrol or diesel.  Also they said he should be able to tell by the sound of the vehicle and the smell of the fuel when he opens the tank cover.  He only had K5, so he gave that.  We felt badly for him because he did have to take some of the blame.

We left the truck at MM, and one of the head guys was going to take us back to CRMF.  However, one of the workers from the NTM clinic was there and offered to give us a lift.  He dropped us off here.  We had lunch, and I had a nap.  We didn’t know how long it would take for them to fix the truck.  They were to call when it was ready.  We waited and waited all afternoon.  We thought about renting CRMF van to go uptown, but Daddy needed to be here when MM was ready to bring the truck over.  Five o’clock came, and we sat down and ate supper.  The phone rang while we were eating.  The truck was finally ready.  They came and picked up Daddy, and he took the man back and paid the bill.  Then went to fill up the tank with petrol.  Praise the Lord everything is okay with the vehicle, and it didn’t cost anywhere near what we had envisioned.  We are certainly thankful that Daddy hadn’t started the truck right away as soon as the guy was done putting the diesel in.  We are thankful for the Lord’s hand upon us today.

So where did all that other money go?  K65 for towing.  K172.60 for labor, etc., for fixing the vehicle.  K464 for our bill here at CRMF.  K100 for time on the mobile.  And another K100 to fill the truck with petrol.  Whew!

This afternoon was spent doing some packing (most of the clothes got dry), and getting the financial report up to date.

“40And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day….  47Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”  John 6:40, 47
